Hearing him directly mention the name "Death Apostle," I was surprised but tried to maintain a calm facade. "Oh? Is that so? How do you know that?"
The room was dimly lit, and since he had his head lowered, I couldn't see his face clearly. I only heard him respond in a deep voice, "You don't need to worry about how I know. I've said what I needed to say; whether you believe it or not is up to you..."
"Then at least tell me who you are?" After I finished speaking, he let out a cold laugh. "My name is..." Just as he was about to speak, there was a knock at the door behind me. He coughed twice and called out to the person outside, "Come in."
A police officer pushed the door open and walked in, saluting the man sitting there. "Mr. Gu, there's something I need to report to you..." The officer glanced at me, as if it were something not suitable for outsiders to hear.
The man sitting there waved his hand at the officer, who understood and leaned down to whisper in his ear. At that moment, I found it strange and thought, "This is a police station, and that man looks like some kind of leader. Why is he addressing him as 'Mr.'?"
After a while, it seemed they had finished their discussion. The man sitting there waved his hand again, and the officer saluted before striding out.
"Your last name is Gu?" I asked. "Yes, my last name is Gu, with the given name Kai," he replied as he lifted his head. Now I could see his features clearly; he had chiseled features like a sculpture, with sharp eyebrows and deep-set eyes that exuded charisma. He looked at me with an expression of superiority...
I snorted lightly in disdain. "So you brought me here just to tell me that 'Death Apostle' is fake?"
"The way you're asking suggests you think I'm making a big deal out of nothing, or should I take it that you simply don't believe me? Right now, I have evidence of your murder in my hands. I'd like to ask you what else you want to know?"
I was taken aback that he turned the question back on me. Hearing that he had evidence of my crime made me quickly think through my options.
After a moment, I said, "There are too many things I want to know. Since you seem so well-informed and have everything under control, why don't you tell me what you know?"
Upon hearing this, the man named Gu Kai revealed a barely perceptible strange smile on his face. He stood up, leaning on the armrests of his chair: "You're quite clever—more clever than I expected—but I'm still one step ahead of you..."
With that, he walked to the door and opened it wide in an inviting gesture. Confused, I asked, "What? You're just letting me go like this?"
"Do you really want to stay here?" he teased. Thinking that since he wasn't willing to share anything further, there was no reason for me to remain, I turned and walked out the door.
As I stepped out of the door, a thought suddenly struck me. I turned back and said, "Let me ask one last question..."
At that moment, he was about to close the door. Hearing my words, he paused and raised an eyebrow with a smirk. "Feel free to ask."
"Are you... friend or foe?" Upon hearing my question, he burst into laughter and replied, "Both friend and foe, neither friend nor foe..."
With that, he slammed the interrogation room door shut. "This person speaks in a way that seems to be constantly on guard against me, and all his answers are ambiguous, making it hard to grasp his intentions... I should go home and have Li Zhisheng help me think this through," I thought as I walked out of the police station.
I glanced back at the surroundings; most of the area was filled with old houses slated for demolition, while a brand new police station stood out starkly against the backdrop.
I muttered to myself, "Why would they build it in a place like this..." Before I could finish my sentence, two beams of headlights appeared in the distance. I focused and saw it was a taxi, so I waved it down. Once inside, I told the driver, "Master, Huifeng District..." The driver acknowledged and headed in the direction of my home.
As I arrived at my doorstep, I heard the sound of a lock clicking open, and the door swung wide. Hu Fang rushed out from inside and collided with me.
"Hey, hey, hey! What are you doing?" Hu Fang stepped back upon hearing my voice and exclaimed, "How come you're back?" Seeing her face filled with questions, I smiled and said, "Let's go inside first."
As soon as we entered the house, Li Zhisheng was surprised to see me back. "I thought you were going to end up in jail. Hu Fang was just about to go look for you."
I sat down in the living room and recounted everything that had happened. After listening, Li Zhisheng said, "The issue with Death Apostle hasn't been resolved yet, and now out of nowhere comes Gu Kai. It seems this matter is getting more complicated."
"Not only that," I continued. "From what Gu Kai said, it seems he knows everything about me and has evidence of my involvement in a murder. I feel like his words were meant to tell me he has something on me..."
Li Zhisheng nodded thoughtfully. "Right. So we can't easily investigate Gu Kai for now. But if we don't look into this matter, Death Apostle might be in danger."
At that moment, Hu Fang interjected, "Anyway, Death Apostle has nothing to do with us. We're struggling to protect ourselves; how can we afford to care about him?"
I waved my hand dismissively. "That's where you're wrong. First of all, this matter arose because of Death Apostle. Regardless of whether he orchestrated it himself or not, I'm currently in a difficult position regarding murder suspicions—just like both of you are. And it seems Gu Kai knows Death Apostle as well. So I believe our primary concern right now is to figure out who exactly we know as Death Apostle."
Li Zhisheng took my words and said, "Only by finding the true Death Apostle can we uncover the truth and continue our investigation. That person named Gu Kai might have some concrete evidence against you; otherwise, he wouldn't be so confident. We need to figure out who the Death Apostle really is without alerting Gu Kai. This is quite a challenge..."
I thought for a moment, "This Gu Kai might very well be the powerful entity we suspected, even stronger than the Death Apostle. With our current abilities, we can't even evade the Death Apostle's spies, let alone Gu Kai. It's likely that our conversation is being overheard right now. In this situation, the only way to avoid their surveillance is to involve someone completely unrelated in the investigation..."
Suddenly, I remembered someone. To prevent being eavesdropped on, I took out my phone and typed the name Meng Zhuang, showing it to them.
After reading it, Li Zhisheng gave me a thumbs-up in agreement. However, Hu Fang, not knowing who Meng Zhuang was, asked curiously, "Who is this?"
I deleted the name from my phone and replied to her, "Don't worry about who it is for now. I need you to help me with something..." I whispered a few instructions in her ear.
After listening, Hu Fang nodded, "I can do that, but what do you want it for?" I smiled and said, "That's for you to find out later; just follow my instructions..."
With that, I went into my room, changed clothes, and tossed the old ones into Li Zhisheng's room.
"I'm going to sleep now; you two should get some rest too." With that, I returned to my room.
As soon as I lay down, I suddenly remembered the ghostly encounter from before and got up to take out the Sheepskin Book to record it. Since I had only seen two ghosts, the marks had faded little and remained near my elbow; however, the indentation on my hand had yet to return to its original state.
Sighing, I muttered to myself, "Looks like I'll need to find an opportunity for some cosmetic work." After putting away the book, I collapsed onto my bed and fell asleep.
The next morning, as soon as I woke up, I saw Hu Fang busy in Li Zhisheng's room. I thought to myself that if all went well today, I would finally know who was real and who was fake.
Seeing them both occupied, I called out to them, "What do you want for breakfast? Should I go buy something or make it?"
Hu Fang was holding two makeup pens and had one in her mouth. Upon hearing about food, she opened her mouth to speak but dropped one of the pens instead. Meanwhile, Li Zhisheng's face was being patted by Hu Fang, making it impossible for him to respond.
Seeing this scene, I couldn't help but smile wryly. "Alright then; I'll just go buy something." With that, I headed out alone to get some food.
I wandered outside for a while, unsure of what to buy. This early in the morning, the streets were filled with vendors selling rice noodles, steamed buns, soy milk, and fried dough sticks. Just as I was about to grab something random and head back home, I suddenly spotted someone across the street who looked exactly like the Death Apostle, strolling alone with a cane.
"Death Apostle! Death Apostle!" I called out twice, but the noise from the traffic drowned my voice completely. In a moment of panic, I decided to run across the street. Just as I stepped off the sidewalk, I heard loud honking—“Beep! Beep!”—from a car rushing toward me.
I quickly turned to look and saw a bus barreling straight at me. I hurriedly pulled my foot back… but in my haste, I tripped on the curb and fell flat on my back with a thud.
Laughter erupted from the crowd around me, but I couldn’t care less at that moment. I scrambled to my feet and steadied myself, scanning the direction where I had seen the Death Apostle. But there was no sign of him anymore.
Disappointed, I brushed off the dust from my clothes and turned around, only to find a pastry shop right behind me. I bought a few cream puffs and some cake, thinking about the two hungry mouths waiting for me at home, and then headed back.
On the way home, I kept replaying the image of that person who looked just like the Death Apostle in my mind. His outfit was so strikingly out of place in modern times that it was almost certain he was indeed the Death Apostle. But without seeing his face up close, I couldn’t jump to conclusions.
As soon as I stepped through the door at home, I was greeted by a familiar face that looked just like mine staring back at me in the mirror. The person spoke in Li Zhisheng's voice, “So, what do you think? Do I look like him?”
