Hearing that Li Zhisheng and Meng Zhuang might be in danger, I quickly pulled out my phone and dialed Meng Zhuang's number. The phone rang with a series of beeps, and I felt a bit anxious, tapping my foot restlessly on the sofa.
After a moment, someone picked up the call. A voice that was somewhat familiar yet strange said, "Your friend is here with me..." The directness of the person on the other end caught me off guard, and I shouted into the phone, "Who are you! What have you done to Meng Zhuang!"
The person remained calm, chuckling softly. "What’s wrong? Can’t you even recognize my voice? As for your friend, he’s doing just fine, so don’t worry."
"I don’t have time to play guessing games with you. If you don’t want to tell me who you are, that’s fine, but I warn you—if you lay a finger on Meng Zhuang, I won’t let you off easily!" I roared impatiently.
"You’re still the same as ever. It’s not convenient to talk right now. Just follow the instructions on the envelope to find me, and I’ll explain everything I know when we meet..." With that, the caller hurriedly hung up.
I was momentarily stunned before realizing, "Could it be that the caller was Death Apostle? But why does his voice sound unfamiliar? It seems he’s deliberately avoiding something. What does all this mean?" I stared blankly at my phone, feeling as though my mind was shrouded in fog; the truth seemed just out of reach.
"What’s going on?" Hu Fang, sitting nearby, nudged me. I snapped back to reality. "Oh… nothing much. It’s getting late; we all need to rest since we have an early start tomorrow…" I exchanged a knowing glance with Li Zhisheng.
Li Zhisheng nodded in understanding while Hu Fang still looked confused. However, having been through quite a bit with me already, she didn’t press further and obediently followed my lead.
The three of us returned to our rooms. Lying flat on my bed, I thought to myself, "What exactly is Death Apostle up to? First there were two indistinguishable Death Apostles, then suddenly Gu Kai appeared out of nowhere. With all these strange occurrences lately, is something big about to happen?"
As I pondered this, I turned onto my side only to be met by a grotesque face staring back at me from my pillow. Our eyes locked just as I turned my head. Even in the dark room, I could see its terrifying visage—grinning wide with sharp teeth and blood-red eyes rolling back until only the whites remained.
In a panic, I instinctively tried to kick it away, but my foot passed right through its body. Seeing me miss, it grinned even wider as if mocking me. A long tongue slithered out of its mouth, ending in a human head that mumbled incomprehensibly as if reciting some incantation.
My heart raced as sweat dripped down my forehead. "I can’t use Void Spirit now; if it decides to attack me, I'm done for..."
Just then, the Evil Spirit's tongue lunged toward my mouth. In that critical moment, I quickly raised my hand to shield myself while imagining what it would feel like if that disgusting tongue touched me…
But seconds ticked by without any sensation at all. Slowly lowering my hand, I opened my eyes only to realize I was still lying flat on my bed and hadn’t turned at all.
"Could it be… another premonition?!" I muttered to myself. If this was anything like what happened in the elevator, then what I foresaw next might very well come true—what should I do?
Suddenly struck by inspiration, I sat up in bed and rummaged for the Sheepskin Book to jot down what had just happened but didn’t write everything down completely.
Afterward, I sat at my desk patiently waiting for whatever might happen next…
The clock on the wall ticked steadily while only the dim light from my desk lamp illuminated the room; everything else was engulfed in darkness.
At that moment, I suddenly felt the curtains flutter as a gust of wind swept into the room, sending a chill down my spine. I thought to myself, "It's coming..." Gripping the pen tightly in my hand, I could feel cold sweat forming from my nervousness.
Suddenly, a rustling sound came from the darkness behind me. A slender, dark arm reached out from the shadows. In a split second, I hurriedly wrote down the remaining lines as quickly as I could. As I drew the final period, a burning sensation shot through my right arm, driving away the chill that had enveloped me.
At the same time, that dark arm retreated into the darkness just as I finished writing. A sharp scream pierced the air, its sound cutting through like a blade.
Hearing that sound made me breathe a sigh of relief. The pen slipped from my fingers and fell to the ground as I slumped back against the chair, exhaling deeply.
"Creak—" The sound of the door opening came from behind me. "Who is it?" I exclaimed, turning around abruptly to see a frail figure standing at the doorway.
"It's me. I heard some noise coming from your room and was worried something happened to you," said Li Zhisheng as he turned on the light.
"What’s wrong?" he asked. I sighed and replied, "Could you please knock next time before coming in? You scared me half to death in the middle of the night..." I then recounted what had just happened.
After listening, Li Zhisheng asked, "Wasn't that similar to what happened in front of the elevator before?!" I nodded. "I don't know how it happened, but it seems like I can now foresee dangers that are about to happen to me."
"Logically speaking, this situation should be good for you. However, since we don't know how things will develop in the future, you should think about what caused this change," Li Zhisheng said. I furrowed my brow; I couldn't recall exactly why this was happening. "I have no idea either. It seems like this started after the Gui Tian Village incident."
"Gui Tian Village... Could it be because you used some ability? Or..." He trailed off mid-sentence as if suddenly remembering something important. "I just recalled! Wasn't it because you overused your Void Spirit and nearly had your soul stripped away?!"
Hearing this made me understand what he was getting at. I picked up where he left off: "So you're saying that because that fake Death Apostle sealed my Void Spirit, this incident occurred?"
He nodded in agreement. "That should be it. Do you remember when you asked that Death Apostle to extend the sealing time with those two talismans? He didn't even touch your talismans; we should have realized something was off back then..."
I thought back for a moment. "It does seem like that. So you're saying he was afraid to touch those talismans... But how did he seal me? You were there; can you tell me what you saw?"
Li Zhisheng shook his head. "After we brought you to the Death Apostle's exhibition hall, we were so anxious to save you that we handed you directly over to him without hesitation. Then he took you into the back room and wouldn't let Hu Fang and me go in because he said it would be dangerous for us if we disturbed his ritual. So we waited in the front hall and knew nothing about what happened inside."
After saying this, a look of guilt crossed Li Zhisheng's face as he lowered his head silently, seemingly apologizing to me. I quickly reassured him, "It's not your fault; there was no other way at that time. If we hadn't done that, maybe I wouldn't even be myself anymore right now. At least my original self is safe now; as for these aftereffects..." I paused for a moment before continuing, "At least it doesn't seem like such a bad thing now..."
Hearing this, Li Zhisheng's expression improved slightly. I patted him on the shoulder and said, "You don't need to blame yourself; it's really not your fault. If anything, it's because I didn't control my power properly..."
I glanced at the clock on the wall; it was nearly five in the morning. "Alright, it's getting late. You should head back and get some rest; I'll call you tomorrow..."
"Okay, you should sleep soon too," Li Zhisheng said as he stood up and returned to his room.
I stretched lazily and lay back down on my bed. Just as I was about to turn onto my side, memories of what had just happened flooded back and left me feeling uneasy, so I opted to lie flat instead while silently praying that nothing else would come tonight. After an unknown amount of time passed, sleepiness began to wash over me...
The next morning, I woke up yawning and glanced at the clock on the wall—it was 9:40. I had slept for at least four hours, yet I still felt as if I hadn’t slept at all. Struggling, I got out of bed and knocked on Li Zhisheng's door before heading to prepare breakfast.
As soon as I arrived in the dining room, I noticed Hu Fang was already up and busy in the kitchen. She had already cooked three servings of eggs and bacon.
"Why are you up so early?" I asked. Hu Fang turned to look at me and replied, "I thought I’d get up early today. Besides, I can sleep later, hehe," and she playfully stuck her tongue out at me.
I chuckled to myself, thinking, "It seems like she’s really getting smarter after spending so much time with us."
At that moment, Li Zhisheng stretched and walked out of his bedroom. As soon as he entered the dining room, he sniffed the air and said, "Hmm? Bacon? Eggs?"
I walked over and playfully slapped him on the back. "Are you a dog? Go sit down and eat." I took a seat at the dining table as well.
After breakfast, Li Zhisheng and I changed into our outdoor clothes. We silently opened the front door and stepped outside. The moment we walked out, our faces shifted from the earlier lightheartedness to a somber expression...
