Before Fan Wu could react, Gu Kai seized the stunned Death Apostle. He gripped Death Apostle's neck and lifted him off the ground, saying, "I thought you would stay hidden in the basement, but here you are, coming out to meet your end. This is your own doing!"
With a determined bite of his teeth, Gu Kai tightened his grip on Death Apostle's neck. A sharp crack echoed as Death Apostle's head tilted to one side.
Yao Long, watching from the side, was dumbfounded. He shouted, "Mr. Death!" He wanted to rush in to save Death Apostle, but his strength was already spent. All he could do was crawl to Gu Kai's feet, clinging desperately to his leg and pounding it with all his might.
Looking down coldly at Yao Long, Gu Kai scoffed, "You overestimate yourself." With that, he kicked Yao Long aside.
"Is Gu Kai telling the truth or just deceiving me? Has Death Apostle really been killed?!" I thought, my eyes wide as I took in the scene before me, momentarily at a loss for how to react.
Seeing that Death Apostle had lost all signs of life, Gu Kai casually tossed him aside and turned to face the struggling Fan Wu. "Now it's your turn!" he declared, stepping closer to Fan Wu.
Knowing he was no match for this man, Fan Wu endured the agony of his pierced chest and tried to crawl away. But Gu Kai clearly had no intention of giving him a chance. In a few quick strides, he raised a fist and slammed it into Fan Wu's back, sending him flying over a hundred meters until he crashed against some metal debris.
"What... what are you trying to accomplish? You warned me before and now..." As I began to grasp the situation, Gu Kai lunged at me and knocked me down with a punch. Towering over me, he said, "Enough chatter. It's not time for you to die yet. Just clean your neck and wait."
His tone was completely different from before. "You..." I wanted to ask what was going on, but as soon as I opened my mouth, Gu Kai transformed into a swirl of green smoke and vanished from my sight. However, just as he disappeared, I noticed something fall from the green mist—a crumpled piece of paper.
I hurried over and picked it up. Unfolding it revealed six black characters: "There's a ghost; leave quickly!"
"So that's what happened..." I murmured softly as I tucked the note into my pocket. "Hu Fang, are you hurt? Can you walk?" I turned to ask.
Hu Fang nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine." She stood up and brushed off the dust from her clothes; she seemed unscathed.
Meanwhile, Yao Long was sobbing over Death Apostle, tears streaming down his face. "Stop crying; we need to get Death Apostle back first," I comforted him.
But oblivious to everything else, Yao Long continued weeping, "There's no need to carry him back; he's already dead... He was my only family in this world!" His cries grew even more anguished.
Since I met Yao Long, I had always thought of him as tough, but seeing him break down like this tugged at my heartstrings. Yet at this moment, I couldn't reveal the harsh truth. "Once someone is dead, they can't come back to life; crying won't help! We need to take him back first!" I emphasized the word "first," hoping he would understand.
However, it seemed that Yao Long didn't grasp my meaning at all and continued crying over Death Apostle. Seeing this, I turned to Hu Fang, who was silently watching: "Stop just standing there; help me talk to him. You comfort Yao Long, and I'll carry Death Apostle back."
Hu Fang seemed to have been lost in thought just a moment ago. Hearing me call her, she snapped back to reality and replied, "Hmm, okay, got it."
I walked over and hoisted the Death Apostle onto my back. Just as I stood up and prepared to leave, I hazily noticed that Fan Wu, who had been knocked away by Gu Kai, was nowhere to be seen.
Looking at the empty space where Fan Wu had been, I thought to myself, "Gu Kai, oh Gu Kai, it's a good thing you're not my opponent right now; otherwise, I wouldn't know how to handle it." With that thought in mind, the four of us made our way out of the amusement park. The journey was smooth, and we encountered no further incidents. However, we did pass by several amusement park staff members who all stared at the Death Apostle on my back with strange expressions, as if they were deliberately waiting for us.
By the time we left the amusement park, it was already evening. I hailed a taxi and headed toward the district. On the way, I took out my phone to call Li Zhisheng and ask him to come out and meet us. However, after dialing three or four times without anyone answering, an ominous feeling washed over me. Anxiety and unease loomed over me like dark clouds.
Sitting beside me, Yao Long was supporting the Death Apostle. He had his head lowered, his face shrouded in shadows.
No one spoke as we sat in silence. About ten minutes later, the taxi stopped at the entrance of our district. As soon as I got out of the car, I lifted the Death Apostle onto my back again and hurried toward home, constantly praying in my heart, "Please let nothing else happen!" With that thought in mind, we arrived at our doorstep.
As soon as I opened the door, I was stunned by the sight before me: Li Zhisheng lay sprawled across the living room floor, and the place had been ransacked. Even Haoyang was nowhere to be found.
"Oh no!" I exclaimed as I rushed inside. I placed the Death Apostle on the sofa and then went over to check on Li Zhisheng's condition. I held my hand near his nose to see if he was still breathing; relieved to find he was alive, my anxiety eased somewhat.
I nudged him and called out, "Hey, Li Zhisheng! Wake up!"
After a few pushes, he finally reacted. "What... what happened?" he mumbled as he groggily sat up and rubbed his head. Seeing that he had no visible injuries made me think he must have been knocked unconscious.
I helped him sit up straight and asked urgently, "What on earth happened? Were you attacked?! Where's Haoyang?!"
Li Zhisheng straightened himself up. "After you all left, I just sat next to Haoyang watching TV. Then suddenly it felt like someone hit me out of nowhere, and I passed out. I don't know what happened."
Panic surged through me as I realized, "Could it be that their goal from the start wasn't just to kill the Death Apostle?!" With this troubling thought in mind, I instructed Li Zhisheng and Yao Long to keep an eye on the Death Apostle.
I prepared to go back inside to check if anything important had been taken. Upon seeing the Death Apostle on the sofa, Li Zhisheng asked, "What happened to the Death Apostle?"
I paused for a moment before casually replying, "He's dead!"
"What?! Dead?!" Li Zhisheng exclaimed.
I ignored him and gestured for him to check for himself before heading inside. Once back in the room, I found it in complete disarray, books and clothes scattered everywhere.
Seeing this, I hurried to the spot where I had placed the Box and began searching. "Just as I expected..." I muttered to myself, looking at the empty drawer.
Two empty Boxes and the booklet about the Void Spirit were nowhere to be found. Fortunately, the Sheepskin Book used to remove the mark on my hand was still there. Since I often needed this book, it hadn't been stored with the other items. Perhaps that was why it hadn't been taken.
At that moment, Li Zhisheng followed me inside, asking from the doorway, "Who killed the Death Apostle?"
"Gu Kai..." I collapsed onto the bed and replied to Li Zhisheng, "But the Death Apostle should still be alive. The plan succeeded, but my Box was stolen."
"If the Death Apostle isn't dead, then why don't you tell Yao Long? He's suffering terribly right now..."
Seeing Li Zhisheng like this, I quickly made a shushing gesture and pulled him closer, whispering, "Gu Kai was here to help us act. He left this behind..." I pulled out a note for him to see.
"This note probably means you should leave the amusement park as soon as possible. Why are you still being cautious at home? Isn't there Ghost Oil here?" Li Zhisheng asked in confusion.
"There is Ghost Oil, but look at how things are now. Are you sure it's safe? Do you think ghosts won't follow us? Also, you were attacked; I suspect Haoyang is behind that. The Death Apostle was worried Haoyang might be recruited, but I didn't expect he would actually fall for it..."
"Anyway, we can't let Yao Long know that the Death Apostle is still alive. If we're acting, we need to do it thoroughly!" At this point, something suddenly came to mind, and I turned around to search again. Seeing this, Li Zhisheng asked, "What’s wrong? What are you looking for now?" I ignored him and continued my anxious search.
After a while, I frowned deeply. "This is bad... Do you remember that book the Death Apostle gave me? The Divine Anomalies Classic: Nine Star Life and Death Diagram?"
Li Zhisheng was startled. "I remember. What? Has it been stolen too?" I nodded in confirmation and sighed heavily. "This time I've really messed up; I never thought they were after these items... If only I had known... sigh..."
Just then, I looked up to see Hu Fang standing at the door with a grim expression and vacant eyes. "Why aren't you comforting Yao Long? Why are you here?" I asked.
"I saw you two had been in here for so long without going out, so I wanted to get you both to help comfort Yao Long. Right now... he’s thinking about suicide, muttering to himself like he's gone mad."
After hearing this, I exchanged a glance with Li Zhisheng. "Forget it. The things are already lost; there's no point in regretting it now. We can only think about how to remedy the situation. Let's go check on Yao Long first. If he really commits suicide, it will be a problem."
Li Zhisheng nodded in agreement, and then we followed Hu Fang out.
Upon arriving in the living room, we saw Yao Long kneeling beside the Death Apostle, repeatedly banging his head on the ground while murmuring, "Mr. Death, I'm coming to join you. Just wait for me..."
Suddenly, he turned around and grabbed a fruit knife from the tea table behind him, attempting to stab himself in the chest. Alarmed, I quickly lifted my foot and kicked at Yao Long's arm holding the knife.
With a clang, the knife was kicked away and fell to the ground. Yao Long looked at me in despair and said, "Why? Why won't you let me die? Mr. Death is my only family and my benefactor. Now that he's gone, what reason do I have to live…"
Yao Long became increasingly agitated, pounding his chest and stamping his feet.
Seeing this, Li Zhisheng and I hurriedly grabbed him and helped him over to another sofa. "I thought the Death Apostle was just your superior. You just said he was your family; do you have a blood relation?"
Yao Long pondered for a moment. "Although there isn't a significant age difference between us, he treated me like family. I am a cursed person, but Mr. Death never abandoned me. If it weren't for him, I would have been left to die in the wilderness long ago…" With that, Yao Long looked at the motionless Death Apostle lying nearby and shed tears of sorrow once more.
