Seeing Yao Long heartbroken, I couldn't bring myself to tell him the truth. Moreover, the Death Apostle seemed to be trapped in a limbo between life and death due to some method employed by Gu Kai. Although he appeared to have lost all signs of life, I could faintly sense that he still had a breath left in him. That breath was incredibly weak; if he hadn't been pressed against my back, I might have believed he was already dead.
"You are the cursed one; is it because of the Void Spirit within you?" I asked Yao Long. He choked on his words, "I'm not really sure. Ever since I can remember, my parents have always argued because of me..."
I thought to myself, "Among the people I know, only Yao Long shares my burden of having the Void Spirit since birth. Perhaps I can find some clues in his past." With that in mind, I urged Yao Long, "What happened? Can you tell me in detail?"
However, Yao Long was in such a low state that he didn't want to revisit those unpleasant memories. When he heard my question, he merely responded with silence.
Seeing his reluctance to answer, I didn't press further, as my own emotions were a tangled mess. Initially, I had suspected that Haoyang might be problematic but failed to take precautions and fell into Yang Master's trap. Now, not only had Box and Yin Li's book been stolen from me, but even the Divine Anomalies Classic: Nine Star Life and Death Diagram given to me by the Death Apostle had vanished without a trace.
As I wallowed in frustration, my gaze caught Hu Fang standing stiffly beside the Death Apostle. Since her return, she seemed off—almost like a different person—showing indifference to everything that had happened and never mentioning her own abduction.
Could Gu Kai's ghost refer to Hu Fang?! A thought flashed through my mind, sending a shiver down my spine. Tentatively, I asked Hu Fang, "Hu Fang, how exactly were you captured by Yang Master's people at the amusement park?"
Upon hearing this, Hu Fang shot me a cold glance filled with unfamiliarity, as if she didn't recognize me at all. After a moment of contemplation, she feigned fear and said, "There were too many people at the time; I got separated from the crowd. After that, I couldn't find you guys anymore. Then a few amusement park staff took me away forcefully to an unfamiliar place. After a while, they brought me back in front of you; that's how it happened."
Hu Fang spoke in an extremely flat tone as if reciting lines from a script. The entire process was described so lightly that it seemed she didn't care at all. My suspicion deepened; I thought to myself, "This Hu Fang must be hiding something. If she's not being controlled by a ghost, then this person isn't the real Hu Fang but rather an imposter."
Even though I knew she was suspicious, I couldn't act on it at that moment. Both Yao Long and I were exhausted; the Death Apostle was utterly defenseless while only Li Zhisheng had any fighting capability left. It would be fine if her power was weaker than Li Zhisheng's; however, if she were stronger than his Soul Burial ability, it could easily plunge everyone back into danger.
Noticing my troubled expression after listening to her explanation, Hu Fang asked, "What's wrong? Is there something bothering you?" Coming back to reality, I forced out a stiff smile and replied, "No... I'm just worried about Yao Long."
Seeing my reaction, Hu Fang didn't press further but instead turned her attention to Yao Long. Upon hearing that I was concerned for him, he stood up and said, "You don't need to worry about me; I'm fine... I just want to go out for a walk..." With that said, Yao Long started toward the door. Realizing this was not the time for him to go out alone—he could easily fall into Yang Master's hands—I quickly grabbed his arm.
"Wait! You shouldn't go out right now. Let's discuss the Death Apostle's funeral first; after all, he is your only family member. If you're not present, we can't make decisions on our own—his body can't just stay here forever."
After hearing this, Yao Long hesitated but eventually nodded in agreement. He sat beside the Death Apostle and silently gazed at him; it was clear they shared a deep bond.
"Hu Fang," I said gently, "you've also had a long day; why don't you go rest in your room? We'll handle the rest." I intended to send her away but was met with her sharp response: "What’s wrong? Do you find me bothersome here? Don't worry; I won't interfere with you."
From her words, I sensed an aggressive undertone as if she were openly declaring that she was there to monitor us and wouldn't leave even an inch.
Li Zhisheng nearby also picked up on our veiled conversation; he glanced at me and said, "The house has been ransacked; I'll go check if anything is missing." With that remark, he stood up and headed back inside.
He had just entered the room when I felt a sudden vibration in my pocket. "Looks like Li Zhisheng has something to say to me. If I'm with him, Hu Fang will definitely come to keep an eye on us, so he chose this way..." I muttered to myself, "I'm going to the bathroom; you all discuss the arrangements for Death Apostle's funeral." With that, I headed into the restroom alone.
As soon as I entered, I locked the door and took out my phone. Li Zhisheng had sent me a text message. The message read, "Hu Fang is suspicious; she is likely here to monitor us. From her words, it’s clear she believes she can defeat everyone present. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have recklessly exposed herself. Right now, avoiding her is quite difficult, and we can't just send Death Apostle directly to the Morgue. Do you have any good ideas?"
I replied, "I think she has two main purposes for monitoring us. First, she wants to see if Death Apostle is really dead; second, she wants to verify whether what they stole is genuine. Since we can't deceive her through Death Apostle, we need to find a way around the second point."
After a moment, Li Zhisheng's text came through again: "I see; so you mean we should make her think that the stolen items are actually fake?"
"Exactly. If I remember correctly, you once showed me an incomplete Divine Anomalies Classic. We can lure them into trying to steal it again and use that as an opportunity to find a breakthrough." After typing this out, I hit send.
"Well, it seems that's our only option. I'll head back shortly to get it." After reading Li Zhisheng's last message, I turned off my phone and didn't reply further. To avoid raising Hu Fang's suspicions, I flushed the toilet and washed my hands before stepping out.
At that moment, Hu Fang and Yao Long were still silently standing by Death Apostle's side, as if bidding farewell to a corpse; the atmosphere was extremely heavy.
Just then, Li Zhisheng walked out of the room and casually said, "I can't find some of my things; I'm going back to get them." He began putting on his shoes to leave. Hu Fang noticed I didn’t stop him and found it strange. "Wasn't he just here? It's not good for him to go out alone now that it's dark. Isn't he afraid of running into Yang Master's people?"
Her tone seemed to warn Li Zhisheng, but he smiled and replied, "It's fine; I can handle myself. Yang Master's people aren't interested in me; they shouldn't bother me." Ignoring Hu Fang's advice, he opened the door and left.
After Li Zhisheng left, the four of us exchanged silent glances, quietly waiting. It seemed like it was about to rain outside; suddenly a strong wind blew through, rustling the leaves.
Finally, after a moment of silence, Hu Fang seemed unable to hold back any longer. Perhaps it was because Death Apostle had shown no signs of life since returning that she no longer wanted to wait.
She yawned and said, "I'm feeling a bit tired; I'm going back inside to rest..." With that, Hu Fang turned and went back into the room.
At this moment, I couldn't help but feel anxious. I thought to myself, "If Hu Fang is possessed, that's one thing; but if this is a fake Hu Fang, where is the real one? Is she dead or alive?" But then I wondered, "If she is possessed, what kind of spirit would have the power to resist Void Spirit and Soul Burial?" These questions lingered in my mind as anxiety crept onto my face.
Yao Long beside me seemed to have adjusted his mindset somewhat; he turned his head towards me and said, "Shen Xu, weren't you curious about what happened before? Do you still want to hear it?"
Seeing that he was finally willing to share, I nodded eagerly. "Yes."
Then Yao Long began recounting his story from that time...
This story starts when I was six years old. At that time, I had just begun school and was often teased for being short. As a result, I didn't talk much with my classmates.
Until one day, a classmate bullied me and threw the first birthday gift my father had bought for me out of the third-floor window. I was completely enraged, and a voice inside me kept telling me to kill him.
Because I was young, I couldn't hold back and threw that classmate out of the window as well. Unsurprisingly, he ended up shattered like my gift.
However, when the investigation into the incident took place, it turned out that I hadn't actually killed him. I clearly remembered the teacher taking me to the school's surveillance room to watch the footage. In the video, the boy I had supposedly killed seemed possessed, as he flew out of the window on his own right in front of me, while I stood there frozen.
From that moment on, my classmates no longer dared to bully me; they avoided me like a plague. I was happy because I knew no one would dare to hurt me again.
Then, I began to take revenge on those who had once harmed me. I pushed them into the middle of the road, threw them into the river, and even chopped them into pieces with my own hands.
Hearing this, I found it hard to believe. I never expected that someone who seemed so loyal could have committed such heinous acts in their youth.
Yao Long's expression grew increasingly ferocious; the corners of his mouth began to curl up as if he were immersed in the thrill of slaughter...
