I turned to Hu Fang and whispered, "I guess so. After all, you suddenly have two Void Spirits with you; it's hard not to worry..."
Upon hearing this, Hu Fang snatched the cigarette from my hand and lit one up. Since she didn't know how to smoke, she took a puff and immediately started coughing.
I grabbed the cigarette from her hand. "If you can't smoke, don't try to learn. What's the point..." With that, I took a drag from the cigarette she had just used.
"How can you say that? Weren't you the one who never smoked before? Why are you starting now?" Hu Fang questioned.
"I was influenced by Meng Zhuang..." I replied, exhaling smoke into the dark, deep void around us. Watching the wisps of blue smoke rise and then dissipate lightened my heart a little.
Suddenly, a sharp ringtone broke the tranquil atmosphere. I pulled out my phone and saw it was a call from my father.
I answered, "Hello, Dad. What made you think to call me at this hour?"
On the other end, I heard my father's long-missed voice: "I noticed you haven't been home in a while, so I thought I'd check in on how work has been for you. The New Year is coming up soon; will you be able to come home for it?" Hearing his voice after such a long time made me realize he sounded a bit older.
I pondered for a moment. "Whether I can come home for the New Year is still uncertain. Things have been pretty busy here; I'll do my best..." In truth, I really wanted to go home, but the current situation didn't allow me to leave. With Li Zhisheng about to undergo surgery and Hu Fang's issues, I was genuinely worried about what might happen if I left.
My father didn't receive a definite answer and sounded somewhat disappointed. "Alright then, make sure to take care of yourself. Remember to eat well; don't neglect yourself... Also, I saw in the news that there was a major accident at an amusement park near you. Be careful; those businessmen only care about making money and don't give a damn about people's safety. They cut corners..."
Listening to my father lament about those unscrupulous Rogue Traders, he had no idea that this incident was actually related to me. However, I had no intention of telling him; if I did, he would surely think I was crazy.
My father has always been relatively conservative, living an honest life without ever believing in any supernatural beings. So I simply told him that I was still in business and left out everything else.
Later, he talked to me about his girlfriend, expressing his desire for me to find a girlfriend and bring her home soon. I declined, saying that there wasn't anyone suitable at the moment, but I would naturally bring someone home when the time was right.
For some reason, during this conversation, I felt Hu Fang casting unusual glances at me from the side.
My father complained, "You're always like this, yet you've never brought anyone home... You're a good person in many ways, but when it comes to love, you act like a wooden fish. Back in the day, your mother and I..."
He then began recounting his love story with my mother. Although I had heard it many times before, each time filled me with an indescribable sense of happiness.
The phone call lasted over half an hour, and Hu Fang patiently listened beside me. After hanging up, I put my phone away and looked at Hu Fang: "Sorry for making you wait so long..."
At that moment, Hu Fang showed no signs of displeasure; instead, she smiled and said, "Your father is such an open-minded person; he must be easy to get along with..." She patted my shoulder.
Hearing this, I sensed that she might have deeper thoughts behind her words, but I couldn't quite grasp what she meant. I then shifted the topic away from myself: "Speaking of which, you've been with us for a while now; don't you want to go home and visit? Don't your parents ever call to check on you?" For some reason, after asking these questions, I noticed Hu Fang's expression darken slightly. Though it wasn't very obvious, it was still noticeable.
"Actually, my parents have passed away. They both died when I was fifteen. After that, I grew up with my grandparents..."
I was taken aback by this revelation. "Wait a minute, your parents died shortly after you were born? I remember you had a younger brother named Tang Qian!?" As soon as the words left my mouth, I realized I had misspoken and mentally slapped myself several times.
Hu Fang: "It's fine. I've long since come to terms with Tang Qian's death. Besides, he wasn't my biological brother, so it doesn't really relate to my background."
"How are your grandparents doing now? Where do they live? I've never heard you mention them..." I pressed on.
Hu Fang pondered for a moment and looked up at the sky: "My grandfather passed away early; he died when I was in my teens. My grandmother is still alive; she used to live in this city. However, after I started working, she began traveling around. Even now, I don't know where she is. If she doesn't reach out to me first, I wouldn't be able to find her because her phone is rarely turned on. So even if I miss her, I can only wait for her to contact me."
Hearing this, I thought to myself, "This old man is quite peculiar. He chooses to go out and travel alone instead of staying with his only granddaughter. Doesn't he worry about what might happen?"
With that in mind, I asked Hu Fang, "Haven't you tried to persuade her? It's dangerous for an elderly person to be out alone."
Hu Fang shook his head helplessly. "Of course, I tried to stop her before, but every time she insisted on going out to play by herself. In the beginning, when she went off to other places alone, I had to put in a lot of effort just to bring her back. But once she was home, she would sulk and ignore me. Eventually, I realized that rather than keeping her cooped up at home, it was better to let her go out and enjoy herself. Otherwise, she would surely blame me when her time comes."
"That's true. After all, everyone has to face death eventually. It’s better to let her do what she wants rather than live with regrets..." I paused for a moment and then suggested, "How about this? Once everything settles down, I'll accompany you to find her, and you can enjoy traveling together while I cover the expenses."
Upon hearing this, a look of relief spread across Hu Fang's face. "That sounds wonderful, but..." He lowered his head quietly. "Will there really be a chance for that? With everything so dangerous around us right now, who knows what might happen..."
Seeing his expression, I sighed inwardly. After all, it was my involvement that had brought them into this situation. Now that they were facing such dire consequences, I didn't know how to make it up to them. Not just Hu Fang; even Li Zhisheng had been hospitalized multiple times due to injuries and had nearly lost his life.
I pondered and sighed deeply, "Is this fate or is someone orchestrating these events?"
