At that moment, the doctor noticed the blood seeping through the crack of the door. "Who’s in there? Are you okay?!" Driven by his professional instincts, he rushed to help, pounding on the bathroom door and calling out.
But all that came from inside was an increasingly frantic sound of teeth clashing, with no response. "Doctor, step aside!" I shouted as I pushed him away and took a few steps back. Then, suddenly, I turned sideways and charged forward. With a loud bang, the bathroom door burst open.
I was taken aback to see the girl from the adjacent bed, Li Zhisheng, sitting on the floor. Her hair was disheveled, and her hospital gown was tattered. Hearing the door crash open, she abruptly lifted her head. I saw her face smeared with blood, and one of her arms had been gnawed down to the bone.
"What are you doing?!" the doctor exclaimed as he rushed forward to save her. Before I could react, he had already sprinted to her side, reaching out to help her up.
I felt a surge of dread and yelled, "Don't get close to her!"
But it was too late. The moment she saw his arm reaching toward her, she instinctively grabbed it and began to bite down without hesitation...
The doctor never expected such a reaction from her. In that brief moment of shock, a chunk of flesh was bitten off his arm. Seeing this, I hurriedly rushed forward and pulled him back. Just in time, as she prepared to take another bite, I managed to drag him out of the bathroom. However, my force was too strong, and we both stumbled to the ground.
"What... what is happening? Is she insane?!" The doctor sat on the floor in shock, clutching his wound.
Meanwhile, the girl didn’t pursue us but continued gnawing at her own arm with a terrifying fervor that resembled a starving ghost.
"Stop her! If this goes on, she'll die!" Despite his own injury, the doctor couldn’t forget his duty to save others. He gritted his teeth against the pain in his arm and got back up, trying again to intervene.
Seeing this, I quickly stood up and grabbed him. "Let me handle it!" Timing my move perfectly, I stepped forward swiftly and seized the girl's hands, twisting them behind her back. Now unable to use her hands anymore, she could only gnaw at herself while making crunching sounds.
"Doctor, come help!" I called out.
The doctor rushed over and together we lifted the girl up by her arms. He then instructed a nurse to fetch some plastic straps used for securing medical equipment so we could bind her to the bed.
By now, several nurses had gathered outside the ward, chattering about what was happening inside. Some suggested calling the police while others wanted a Psychiatry doctor to come take a look...
After the attending physician, Li Zhisheng, treated the wound, he approached me and said, "Is she your friend? She doesn't seem to have epilepsy or anything like that; it looks more like there's a mental issue. If she's brought outside in this state, it could be very dangerous. If necessary, we should send her to a psychiatric hospital; at least there’s hope for recovery. I'll have the psychiatrist come over to take a look shortly..."
"She's not our friend; we just met yesterday. I don't know why she ended up like this, but this girl has been through a lot, and I really want to help her. So please, could you find someone to assist her?"
The doctor nodded in response and turned to leave. I watched his departing figure and thought, "Although this doctor has a bit of a temper, he is indeed a kind-hearted and dedicated physician."
As I pondered this, I glanced at Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng. They were staring at the girl on the bed with expressions of shock, seemingly thinking, "She was fine just yesterday; how did she suddenly become like this?"
Since Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng had not heard about what Yao Long mentioned, they were unaware of the situation and only found the girl very strange.
At that moment, Li Zhisheng lay on the bed and waved me over as if he wanted to say something. I hurriedly leaned in closer. He said, "I noticed something odd about her body. It seems her soul is incomplete, and there’s something attached to it that doesn’t look like a Void Spirit. If it's a ghost, I'm not quite sure what it is, but it seems to be growing. What could that Demonic Mark be...?"
Furrowing my brow, I shook my head and replied, "I’m not sure what it is either, but I suspect it might be related to her mother."
At this point, Li Zhisheng sensed that I might know something more. He pressed on, "Did you find out anything during your time away? Feel free to share; maybe I can help you figure it out."
"Alright then..." I responded and briefly explained the situation regarding Yao Long's town.
He listened carefully and said, "From what you've described, it seems this girl is connected to that town's legend. However, according to Yao Long's account, that doesn't make sense at all; she has never been to that town. Even if her mother is from there, it's been so long since she left... None of this adds up..."
I replied, "That's exactly what I don't understand. There must be something wrong here. If Yao Long isn't lying, then he must have been deceived or perhaps neither of them truly understands the real situation..."
As I spoke, I looked at the bed across from me. The girl wasn’t struggling; she was merely opening and closing her mouth repeatedly. The clashing of her teeth produced unsettling sounds of “clack—clack—clack.”
"Li Zhisheng," Hu Fang said seriously, "Do you think this girl was scared by your ghost story last night? Now she's acting like Baymax; it's impossible for her to encounter a ghost..." She firmly believed that Li Zhisheng was responsible for the girl's current state.
Li Zhisheng looked helpless and said, "My dear aunt, this really has nothing to do with me. Why do you always want to dump this mess on my head?"
Just as Li Zhisheng was defending himself, a doctor's voice came from outside the door, "Everyone stop looking and get back to work..." He waved his hand, dispersing the crowd gathered at the entrance, and walked in with another doctor in a white coat.
As soon as the doctor entered, he asked, "Who is that person of yours?"
Li Zhisheng's Attending Physician pointed to the girl lying on the bed. At that moment, she had stopped biting and was quietly asleep with her eyes closed.
The doctor approached her bedside and gently patted her, saying, "Hey—wake up—"
At the sound of his voice, the girl opened her eyes and looked around in confusion. She felt pain in her arm and suddenly began to scream, "Someone... bit me... it hurts... it really hurts, doctor, please save me!"
As she shouted, she looked over at me and exclaimed, "Yes, it's him! He's the one who bit me! Doctor, please save me!"
