"Li Zhisheng!" I shouted as I rushed forward, only to hear his voice coming from where he had fallen. "Don't come over! I'm fine, just use the rope to pull me up..."
Upon hearing this, Yao Long and Death Apostle grabbed the tightly stretched rope on the ground. I didn't hesitate and joined them, pulling with all my strength.
Before long, we managed to haul Li Zhisheng back to the side of the vehicle. He lay on his back in the snow, still shaken, gasping for breath as thick clouds of mist escaped from his mouth.
Ignoring the soreness in my arms, I slowly moved forward, repeatedly calling out Hu Fang's name. After a few shouts, I finally heard her voice from beneath the snow, sounding somewhat panicked. "I'm down here!"
As Hu Fang called out, more layers of snow collapsed downwards, revealing a hole larger than the car. I dared not get any closer and shouted towards the opening, "Don't worry! We'll find a way to rescue you!"
By this time, the sun had completely set, plunging everything into darkness. Holding my phone for light, I picked up the rope from the ground and tossed it into the large hole.
"Can you grab the rope?!" I asked.
At that moment, a light shone from within the hole; it seemed Hu Fang had also taken out her phone for illumination. Hearing my question, she replied anxiously, "No... it's still a bit short..."
My heart raced with urgency, fearing that the hole would collapse again and bury Hu Fang completely. Just then, Yao Long had a brilliant idea. He untied the rope from the car and tied it around himself. "Quick, hold onto me," he said. It looked like he intended to extend the rope using his own body.
Upon hearing Yao Long's words, everyone quickly lined up, holding onto each other's hands while one person clung tightly to the parked car.
"Can you reach it now?!" Yao Long called down into the hole.
"Yes!" With Hu Fang's response, I felt the grip on Yao Long's hand suddenly tighten. In an instant, Yao Long slipped slightly under the sudden strain and almost got pulled into the hole.
"Quick! Pull hard!" Yao Long shouted desperately as he struggled to maintain his balance. As soon as he finished speaking, everyone exerted their strength together and began to pull up the rope little by little.
Moments later, we managed to pull Hu Fang out of that snow pit. We all collapsed in the snow beside the car, panting heavily. Fortunately, it seemed that Hu Fang had not sustained any injuries due to the snow.
"I warn you... if anything else happens, I really won't care about you anymore," I said breathlessly as I scolded them.
Li Zhisheng and Hu Fang apologized with guilt written all over their faces.
Meanwhile, Yao Long stepped in to mediate for them. "Don't blame them too much; it's their first time here and they didn't know better. Let's just consider it a lesson learned."
With that, Yao Long got up from the ground and helped us all back on our feet. "Alright, we've just worked up a sweat; let's not stay out here too long. Let's get back in the car..." As he spoke, we all returned to the vehicle.
Once inside, Yao Long started the engine and turned on the heater. It didn't take long for warmth to fill the car.
I rubbed my hands, which were painfully cold, against the air conditioning vent and asked Yao Long, "If there are big pits everywhere, wouldn't it be dangerous even if we drive?"
Yao Long frowned and nodded. After a moment of thought, he said, "Should we learn from the animals that have their noses eaten off?"
Upon hearing this, I chuckled and immediately understood his meaning. "You mean to send someone ahead to scout?"
Yao Long nodded. "With the sudden drop in temperature, it's best if we take turns going out to scout. Otherwise, we might end up freezing."
"Then I'll go first, and we'll switch later..." I turned to look outside. The snow was falling heavier now, and a strong wind whipped the feather-like snowflakes into a swirling dance.
As soon as I opened the door, Yao Long reminded me, "Remember to tie the rope!" I nodded at him and stepped outside. The moment I left the car, it felt like the exposed parts of my body were being torn apart by the cold wind, sending sharp pains through me.
I braved the freezing temperatures and fierce winds, tying one end of the rope to the car and the other around my waist. Then I trudged forward step by step through the snow.
Since each step was a careful trial, my progress was relatively slow. Not long after I started walking, I felt as if my face and hands were about to freeze off. I pulled my collar up high and crossed my arms inside my sleeves in an attempt to warm myself.
I continued walking for about an hour. Just when I felt I could no longer endure it, I heard Li Zhisheng's voice calling from behind. He poked his head out of the window and shouted, "Shen Xu! You've been walking for almost two hours; come back! I'll take over for you."
Although I wanted to be a hero and keep going, the bone-chilling cold was unbearable. At that moment, it felt like I was encased in a giant ice block; I simply couldn't hold on any longer.
"Okay... okay... I'm coming back now..." I replied with a trembling voice.
Upon hearing this, Li Zhisheng quickly got out of the car, took the rope from my hands, and helped me back inside. As soon as I got in the car, it felt like stepping into a warm room; before long, I started to feel warm all over.
"Here—have some hot water," Hu Fang said as she handed me a bottle of mineral water from the back seat. After thanking her, I took it and gulped down several large swigs; instantly, warmth spread through me.
At that moment, looking at the lukewarm mineral water in my hands made me curious. There was nothing in the car to heat it; where did this warm water come from?
Thinking about it, I asked Hu Fang, "Hu Fang, why is this water warm?"
Hearing my question, she shyly lowered her head while Death Apostle sitting next to her cleared his throat twice and said, "It's from the air conditioning blowing in front..."
"Oh—now I see; you guys are clever," I said as I took another few gulps of water.
At that moment, I looked ahead and saw Li Zhisheng tied with a rope as he struggled against the wind and snow step by step. Snow had already piled up on his shoulders and hair.
I pointed at Li Zhisheng ahead and asked Yao Long, "Was I like that just now?"
Yao Long shook his head. "No, you looked worse than him just now."
"Hey, how can you say that? I was just trying to help you clear the way, and this is how you repay me? I should at least be described as a robust figure..."
Along the way, I joked with them to ease the originally tense atmosphere in the car.
After a while, I took out my phone to check the time. "How long has Li Zhisheng been driving? It's time to switch drivers..."
Before I could finish my sentence, there was a sharp "bang," followed by two muffled thuds. Yao Long's expression darkened as he exclaimed, "Oh no, the snow chains broke, and it seems like two tires have blown out..."
Before he could finish, another muffled sound followed.
The series of noises startled Li Zhisheng in front of us. He turned around to check and shouted back, "You guys need to get out! It seems like three tires have blown out consecutively!"
Hearing this, a chill ran down my spine. "This is bad; we only have two spare tires... It looks like we're going to have to spend the night here..."
