Seeing this, I hurriedly stepped forward to help Hu Fang up. At that moment, she had already fainted. Yao Long and I worked together to carry her to her room and laid her down on the bed. After that, we returned to my room, where we found Death Apostle and Li Zhisheng had also fainted at some point, lying on the bed with their hands still tightly bound.
"Should we help them loosen their bindings?" Yao Long asked.
"Not for now. We don't know if they've recovered yet; let's wait until they wake up. They look like they've exhausted a lot of energy," I replied, glancing out the window. After a night of turmoil, dawn was breaking, and the rising sun painted the eastern sky red.
I walked to the window and looked outside. The three people I had seen last night were now sprawled across the ground in disarray. The old woman's head was tossed aside, her body mangled from bites. The couple lay in a pool of blood, uncertain whether they were alive or dead.
Seeing such a grim scene, I thought to myself, "What would the townspeople think if they came out and saw this?" With that thought, I scanned the surroundings.
The ancient street was empty; no residents had emerged, not even the morning birds chirping, creating an eerie silence.
"You haven't rested all night; aren't you tired?" Yao Long asked from behind me.
"How could I not be tired? I didn't sleep well last night and haven't slept at all today. My eyes can barely stay open..." I rubbed my eyes as I replied, glancing at Death Apostle and Li Zhisheng on the bed. Seeing no signs of trouble from them, I continued to Yao Long, "It seems they're fine; why don't we take a break too?"
Yao Long responded, "You go rest; I'm used to it. It's common for me to go without sleep during missions. I'll sit here for a while and keep an eye on them. You should go rest in my room." He handed me the room key.
Feeling utterly exhausted, I didn't argue further and accepted the key, dragging my weary feet to Yao Long's and Death Apostle's room.
As soon as I entered the room, I closed the door and collapsed onto the bed, falling into a deep sleep...
I slept soundly until evening when someone knocked on the door, rousing me from my slumber. Blinking my sleepy eyes open, I instinctively asked, "Who is it?"
"It's me and Death Apostle..." came Li Zhisheng's voice from outside.
Hastily, I opened the door to find Li Zhisheng and Death Apostle standing there. They looked relatively well-rested.
I let them in and asked, "Why are there only two of you? Where's Yao Long?"
"He's asleep. We thought we would come over to check on you without waking him up," replied Death Apostle.
"This guy, saying it’s fine to not sleep... He probably fell asleep right after I left," I muttered.
Death Apostle responded, "Maybe he was just too exhausted. After all, he drove for so long last night and only got a little sleep. Plus, he fell asleep after we woke up."
After hearing Death Apostle's words, I felt a bit guilty. After all, Yao Long was doing his best to help everyone. "Well, let's just let him rest properly," I said.
At that moment, Li Zhisheng, sitting by the bed, asked, "What happened last night? I remember you telling me about your illness, and then I felt like I was drifting into some strange world. I even thought you turned into an Evil Spirit trying to harm me..."
Upon hearing Li Zhisheng's confusion, I detailed everything that had happened the previous night.
After listening, Li Zhisheng didn't seem concerned about his own situation but immediately asked, "What about Hu Fang?!". His expression showed he was quite anxious.
I shook my head and said, "I just woke up too. I'm not really sure about her condition either. How about we go check on her?"
With that, the three of us left the room and arrived at Hu Fang's door. As I knocked on the door, I called out, "Hu Fang~ Are you awake?" After several calls with no response from inside, I started to panic a little and shouted more urgently, "Hu Fang! Are you in there?!"
"What if something happened to Hu Fang?!" My heart raced with unease. At that moment, Li Zhisheng anxiously suggested, "Stop shouting and just break down the door. What if something happened to Hu Fang..."
Seeing Li Zhisheng so worried made me think the same way. So I stepped back a few paces, gathered my strength, and charged at the not-so-thick door with my shoulder... With a loud crash, the door fell off its hinges. It wasn't that I used too much force; the house was old and poorly maintained, so the area where the door was attached had rotted away.
As soon as the door burst open, I found the room empty. Hu Fang, who had been placed on the bed earlier, was nowhere to be seen. The room was very tidy with no signs of struggle or even bloodstains.
At this moment, not only was I stunned; Li Zhisheng and Yao Long were too. Li Zhisheng exclaimed, "Where did Hu Fang go? Did she go out to buy something?"
"I'm not sure..." I replied, "Hu Fang knows she can't leave this place. Besides, this town is in the middle of nowhere, with no means of transportation. Not to mention that there isn't a single shop open in town where she could buy anything..."
"But how could a perfectly fine person just disappear like that?" Death Apostle pondered aloud. Suddenly, he remembered something and said, "Right, Shen Xu, why don't you give her a call?"
If it weren't for Death Apostle's reminder, I might have completely forgotten about my phone. "Yeah, how could I forget about that? I must be losing my mind..." I quickly pulled my phone out of my pocket. But just as I turned on the screen and prepared to dial, my mood plummeted once again.
"What's wrong? Why aren't you calling?" Li Zhisheng asked.
I turned the phone screen towards them and said, "There's no signal at all. What a waste of time..." Li Zhisheng and Death Apostle also pulled out their phones to check. Unsurprisingly, none of them had any signal either.
At this point, we found ourselves in a predicament once more. Three of us were already infected with a strange illness, and with Hu Fang missing, the weight on my heart grew heavier.
As I anxiously paced back and forth in the room, I furrowed my brow and muttered to myself, "What I need to know now is whether Hu Fang left on her own or if someone took her. If she left by herself, where would she go... If she was taken, where could they have brought her..."
