Hearing the sound, I tightened my grip on Jiang Ling and suddenly turned around. There it was again, the monster covered in festering sores, standing right in front of me.
"Is it really immortal?!" Even Void Spirit felt a twinge of doubt.
Suddenly, I remembered that I still had a talisman given to me by the shopkeeper. Could this be the key to defeating it?
Thinking this, I instinctively reached for the talisman in my jacket pocket. But as soon as I extended my hand, I realized my jacket was nowhere to be found. "Right, I gave my jacket to Hu Fang earlier..."
In an instant, it dawned on me. I quickly glanced around and saw Yao Long, Hu Fang, and Li Zhisheng entangled with the Azure Scale Monster in a fierce battle, unable to break free. My jacket was currently worn by Hu Fang, leaving me no chance to retrieve it.
At that moment, I felt a tightness in my chest and cursed under my breath. Before I could react further, the monster opened its chest cavity wide, its white ribs stretching outward, revealing an empty cavity devoid of organs—a gaping maw of blood.
As it lunged at me, I hurriedly dodged. Just as I evaded its attack, I reversed my grip on Jiang Ling and swung it upward with all my strength. In an instant, the sharp blade sliced through its body once more, splitting it in two.
At that moment, I sensed Void Spirit's intent and quickly adjusted my grip on the sword's hilt, following through with a downward slash. As the blade pierced its body, I channeled my own energy into You Long, guiding it along with the sword into the monster's form.
In an instant, a blinding red light erupted before me, nearly blinding me. "Shen Xu! There's no time!" Void Spirit shouted urgently. "Quickly withdraw my power; this You Long should be able to hold it temporarily! Hurry!"
Without hesitation, I pulled Jiang Ling back and steadied myself as I slowly began to retract Void Spirit's power. The moment the energy vanished completely, an overwhelming weakness washed over me; even standing upright became a challenge, and a burning sensation coursed through my arm.
I staggered backward several steps before collapsing onto the ground. "Is this really it?!" I murmured to myself in despair.
But just then, I noticed a notebook tumble out from my backpack behind me. "Isn't this... the Sheepskin Book I brought earlier?! It seems there’s still hope!"
I muttered to myself as I quickly removed my backpack and rummaged through it until I found a pen. Sitting cross-legged on the ground, I began to write furiously.
In the distance, Li Zhisheng and Yao Long were drawn towards the dazzling red light emitted by You Long and turned their gazes in my direction...
Because of this, they spotted me sitting on the ground. Li Zhisheng shouted at me, "Shen Xu! What are you doing?! Are you waiting to die?!"
At that moment, I was completely absorbed in my writing, having no time to pay attention to him. However, not knowing how long You Long could contain that monster, I shouted without looking up, "I'm trying to eliminate some marks! You all hurry up and deal with that monster, buy me some time!"
As soon as I finished speaking, I felt a surge of power from a distance. "Is it Yao Long? Does he still have so much power left unused?! It seems he has indeed gone through quite a few battles and won't release all his strength at once."
Thinking this, I decided not to concern myself with them any longer and focused entirely on the pen in my hand.
As my pen danced across the paper, black characters began to appear on the yellowed parchment.
Just as I was deeply engrossed in writing, I sensed the light around me gradually dimming. It seemed that without a continuous flow of power, the remaining strength in You Long was almost depleted. At that moment, I had barely written half of what I needed.
Seeing this, I felt an overwhelming sense of urgency; beads of sweat rolled down my chin and dripped onto my clothes.
After a moment, the vast circular space was left illuminated only by the dim glow of the campfire in the center. "What’s wrong? Have you given up?! If so, then I'll grant you your wish!" The monster's voice echoed before I felt a foul wind approaching me.
Though I was anxious beyond measure, it wasn't just because I couldn't stop recording the story; it was also due to having overexerted myself earlier, leaving my body unable to move.
As that foul wind drew closer, despair began to creep into my heart. "It is destined to be this way; there's no escaping it. Since I'm fated to die here, there's no point in struggling..."
With that thought, I stopped writing and slowly closed my eyes, waiting for death to come.
But at that moment, another gust of wind howled from the opposite side of my body. From that rushing force, I faintly sensed Li Zhisheng's presence.
I suddenly opened my eyes and saw a pitch-black spear slicing through the air like a black dragon heading straight for me.
At the same time, a terrified shout came from afar: "Li Zhisheng, get out of the way!" Immediately after, a burst of blue light erupted as if Yao Long had unleashed all the power of his Void Spirit.
In an instant, just as the monster stood before me, Li Zhisheng's thrown spear arrived and struck the monster's body but did not pierce through. There was a deafening explosion. The shockwave from the blast sent me flying several dozen meters away.
However, just as I flew out, I heard a heart-wrenching scream from Li Zhisheng, the sound echoing painfully in the circular space.
At that moment, due to Li Zhisheng's attack, black smoke had already filled the area, making it impossible to see what was happening in the distance. I shook my head, which throbbed painfully from the explosion, and shouted towards Li Zhisheng's direction, "What happened to you?!"
I could only hear Li Zhisheng gritting his teeth, speaking in a broken voice, "I... you quickly... get away from there!"
After hearing this, I tried to get up and move, but my body felt unresponsive, unable to budge at all. Just then, amidst the black smoke, a decayed human face suddenly appeared. It leaned closer to me with a sinister expression and rasped, "You can't escape! Stop struggling!"
With that, it reached out a bloodied arm from the smoke and grabbed my neck, lifting me off the ground.
The Sheepskin Book and Jiang Ling slipped from my hands and fell to the ground. "If you want to kill me, just do it! Stop with the nonsense!" I managed to say with difficulty.
Yet it treated me like a toy, squeezing my neck but not killing me outright. It said, "Such a good body; wouldn't it be too much of a waste to let you die just like this..."
