I was startled by the sudden voice, instinctively exclaiming, "Who!" before turning around. At that moment, the familiar face of the Grocery Store Boss appeared before me.
I wasn't sure if I was shocked by his sudden appearance or relieved to see that the Grocery Store Boss was alive. Instantly, the anger that had been boiling inside me dissipated by half.
"You... you're not dead?!" I stammered, at a loss for words.
Upon hearing this, the Grocery Store Boss released his hand from my shoulder and said, "If you hadn't come, I might have really died. However, while you were fighting here, you bought me enough time. Thank you..." With that, he ignored my stunned expression and walked a few steps past me.
He stood in front of me and faced the monster across from us. "Your time is up; now I am you. If I die, you will perish alongside me!"
Upon hearing the Grocery Store Boss's words, the strange smile on the monster's face vanished, replaced by fear and surprise.
"I must have been blind to ask you to help me with this. Over a decade ago, when your family fell from grace, if I hadn't stepped in to help and given you some money, would you be where you are now?!" The monster shouted angrily, its voice tinged with tension.
But the Grocery Store Boss remained calm. "You did help me; if it weren't for you, I might have starved on the streets by now. But using me to do such harmful things is something I cannot tolerate!" His last few words were powerful and resonant, as if his pent-up fury was about to burst forth.
"May I borrow your weapon..." The Grocery Store Boss extended his hand towards me. Seeing this, I hesitated. It wasn't that I doubted his ability to wield Jiang Ling; I just didn't know what he intended to do.
I didn't hand him the sword directly but asked, "What do you plan to do? Don't act impulsively..."
When I refused to lend him the sword, the Grocery Store Boss suddenly darkened his expression and murmured, "Then I'm sorry..." He snatched Jiang Ling from my hand and dashed toward the monster ahead.
Before I could react, he was already close to the monster. I shouted, "Watch out!"
But it was as if the Grocery Store Boss didn't hear me; he raised his sword and swung it down at the monster. The creature immediately lost its previous calm demeanor and hurriedly dodged.
After several exchanges, the monster only focused on evading the Grocery Store Boss's attacks and showed no intention of fighting back. It was a stark contrast to its earlier battle with me; now it seemed even afraid to defend itself.
The shopkeeper pressed forward, relentlessly swinging the Jiang Ling at the creature. In a moment, due to the excessive blood it absorbed from the shopkeeper, Jiang Ling began to take on a reddish hue, and a thin You Long flickered into view on his arm.
"Boss! That sword absorbs the user's blood; don't take too long!" I shouted to the shopkeeper.
At that moment, the creature, which had been dodging attacks, heard my words. It grinned with its decayed mouth and said, "Oh? Is that so? It seems you can't kill me after all..."
Before it could finish speaking, a red light flashed in the distance. Several crimson arrows flew toward the creature at incredible speed, striking its feet and pinning it firmly to the ground.
Seeing this, the shopkeeper seized the opportunity and thrust his sword deep into the creature's chest. The creature cried out in terror, "No! You'll die too! Aren't you afraid?!"
The shopkeeper remained calm. "Death doesn't scare me; what frightens me is dying without dignity! If I have to betray my conscience just to survive, I'd rather die right here!"
With that, a dark green aura began to emanate from the shopkeeper's body, flowing into the creature through the sword embedded in it.
At that moment, he shouted to me, "Quick! Use the talisman I gave you to completely eliminate this creature!"
I was momentarily stunned but quickly regained my composure. I hurriedly searched Hu Fang, who lay on the ground, for the so-called "Ultimate Xie." Gripping the talisman tightly in my hand, I dashed toward the creature.
Seeing me approach, the creature conjured a dark green sphere and hurled it at me. However, with the power of Void Spirit still coursing through me, I couldn't resist it but easily dodged this attack.
As the sphere drew near, I swiftly sidestepped it and tightened my grip on the talisman. Biting my finger until it bled, I let my blood drip onto the talisman. Then, with a powerful leap, I slammed the talisman against the creature's forehead.
The instant the talisman made contact with it, it ignited and burned away completely, transforming into a cloud of golden dust that scattered into the air.
In that moment of disappearance, the creature let out a series of agonizing wails that echoed like thunder throughout the cavern. Its hands flailed wildly in an attempt to grasp something. Yet all was in vain; moments later, its thrashing body gradually dissolved into a puddle of putrid blood on the ground.
Seeing this, I rushed forward to support the shopkeeper as he began to topple over and took Jiang Ling from his hands. Concerned, I asked, "How are you holding up? Can you still manage?!"
At that moment, the grocery store owner's gaze began to fade, yet a look of contentment spread across his face. He smiled and said, "My wish has been fulfilled; even in death, I have no regrets..."
Just then, Yao Long arrived, supporting Li Zhisheng. Upon seeing the pool of blood and pus on the ground, he stepped on it and exclaimed, "Surely it won't come back to life now?!"
Hearing this, the grocery store owner reassured Yao Long, "Don't worry; it's dead and can't come back to life..." As he spoke, he pulled out a thick notebook from his clothing and handed it to me. "Everything you want to know is in here. Now... I must go..."
As he finished speaking, the skin on the grocery store owner's face gradually dried up and sank in, quickly transforming into a skeleton. Then came a series of cracking sounds as the bones crumbled under their own weight and fell to the ground. The moment they touched the floor, they turned to dust and scattered into the air.
At that moment, I still held onto the grocery store owner as if supporting him, but my expression had frozen. I had thought that this was the end; perhaps he would not die just yet. But I never expected him to turn to ashes right before my eyes.
Though he was neither a close friend nor a family member by blood, I had come to realize through our interactions that he was indeed a good person who had also done me a favor. Seeing him turn to dust before me filled me with sorrow. As I thought about it, my vision began to blur...
Just then, the ground shook violently, and from the cave entrance came a series of cracking sounds, as if the mine were about to collapse...
