You should already have a general understanding of the events that transpired. A merchant came to the town, bringing disaster with him. While that was indeed the case, the subsequent developments were beyond your expectations.
The wealthy merchant forced me to find a way to extract the souls of the living. After my investigation, I discovered that he had used this method to first extract the soul of the town mayor, and then secretly implanted his own soul into the mayor's body.
In doing so, he replaced the mayor and became the new leader of this place. Although I did not know where the merchant obtained the method to implant his soul into another body, if I guessed correctly, he intended to use this method to achieve immortality and gain immense power.

Because of this, every nightfall, he would transform part of his power into a shadow and go collect souls from the townspeople. Eventually, he even attempted to gather souls from a nearby city.
