At that critical moment, Hu Fang noticed something was off with me, but her sense of urgency wasn't very strong—perhaps due to her lack of combat experience.
Seeing me contorted, my head pressed tightly against the car door, she asked, "Shen Xu, what kind of trick are you playing? Yoga?"
I was hanging by a thread; if those Soul Threads touched me, it would be over. But since I had just put Jiang Ling into my bag, I couldn't retrieve it in such a cramped space. So I shouted to Hu Fang, "Quick! Help me get the sword out of my backpack!"
When Hu Fang heard the seriousness in my voice and saw my anxiety, she finally realized I was in danger. However, instead of grabbing Jiang Ling from my bag, she quickly pulled her foot back and kicked the hand that was pressing down on my head.
The hand slipped away from my head after Hu Fang's kick. "Thanks!" I exclaimed as I got up, opened the car door, and kicked it wide open, knocking the Demonic Mark that had been standing by the door to the ground.
I hurriedly got out of the car and pulled Jiang Ling from my backpack. Looking closely, I saw the person who had just been shot through the head by a green beam lying in the snow. His body was twitching uncontrollably, with a large amount of Soul Threads pouring out of the hole in his head, covering his entire face. But those Soul Threads had only just emerged from his body when they began to darken and stiffen, eventually turning to ash and drifting away with the falling snowflakes.
"Was that his last struggle before death? What a pitiful person..." As I spoke, I watched as he slowly stopped moving and completely turned into a Zombie. At that moment, Hu Fang ran over to me, her voice urgent. "Shen Xu, are you okay?!"
I pointed at the now completely stiff corpse on the ground with Jiang Ling. "I'm fine; he's completely dead..."
After experiencing that series of shocks earlier, Hu Fang seemed less frightened by these things now. She stepped forward and kicked the corpse. "Should we burn him? What if he gets back up? Aren't those Zombies in movies impossible to kill?"
I thought for a moment. "He shouldn't come back; he took a hit from Gu Kai that pierced his skull. With such a weak ability, I feel he won't come back to life."
Just as I finished speaking, there was a loud bang as snow and dust erupted from behind the truck. "It's down!" I exclaimed and rushed over to check. The stone tablet had crashed down among the rubble and shattered into several pieces.
"This should be fine; let's get out of here..." With that, Hu Fang and I returned to the car we had rented earlier. Just as I turned the key to start the engine, several headlights suddenly appeared in the rearview mirror, accompanied by a roar of engines.
"Not good, just as Gu Kai said, those people came to check!" Thinking this, I quickly started the car and pressed the accelerator, speeding away.
All the way, I didn't care whether there were any vehicles chasing behind; I just kept driving straight ahead until I could no longer see any vehicles in the rearview mirror. Gradually, I eased off the speed.
I turned on the car lights and then noticed that the roof of the car had been punctured by that person named Yang Feng. It seemed he hadn't exited through the door but had jumped out directly through this hole.
Looking at the snowflakes drifting in through the hole, I sighed, "Now I'm going to have to pay a lot for this. What a costly outing... sigh."
"You’re the Boss, right? What’s a little money to you?" Hu Fang scoffed.
I replied, "My dear aunt, even if I had a lot of money, it doesn’t come from thin air; it’s all hard-earned money. Spending it like this for no reason—don’t you feel any pain?"
Hu Fang grinned, "Not at all; it’s not my money..."
At that moment, seeing Hu Fang's smile inexplicably lifted my spirits. She had been mired in self-doubt before, but now, with newfound confidence and strength to fight back, she seemed much more self-assured and less fearful of things that once intimidated her.
Noticing my silence, she asked again, "Speaking of money, how much do you actually have? I feel like you don’t have much. Look at your house; it’s still rented. If you really had money, why not just buy it outright?"
I chuckled lightly, "You can't say it like that. Even if someone is wealthy, they can run out of money eventually. Plus, with unforeseen circumstances, who knows when I might need cash? Besides, I'm not one to settle down in one place for too long. The only reason I've stayed in that house is that I like it a bit more than others..." I hesitated here, worried that mentioning my past might sadden Hu Fang. So I brushed over it lightly: "And look at all these strange things happening around us; who has time to find a new place?"
Hu Fang seemed not to recall the past or perhaps had come to terms with it. She murmured softly, "What a strange person..."
After that, we fell silent and drove through the night back to Hohhot. By the time we entered the city, it was already past four in the morning. Realizing there was no way to return the car at this hour, we decided to drive directly to the hospital and return it there in the morning.
Back at the hospital, Hu Fang and I went straight to Li Zhisheng's ward. Inside, several people had already fallen asleep, but Yao Long was more alert. As soon as I opened the door, he noticed and quickly got up, watching the entrance with caution. When he saw it was me, he relaxed and cautiously stepped outside.
Seeing that Li Zhisheng and the Death Apostle were already asleep, Hu Fang and I decided not to go in. We let Yao Long out, and the three of us sat together on a bench in the hospital corridor.
Yao Long asked, "Why are you back so soon? Did everything go smoothly? And your injury..." He pointed to the blood seeping from my knee.
I had summoned the Void Spirit earlier and had been highly focused in the face of danger, so I hadn't felt any pain until Yao Long mentioned it. Suddenly, I felt a sharp sting. "It should be fine; I just fell down..." I then recounted everything that had happened to Yao Long.
After listening, he clicked his tongue in amazement. "From what you're saying, Gu Kai has saved your life twice now, but why..." Before he could finish, I was too exhausted and unconsciously leaned back against the bench, falling asleep.
