At that moment, Li Zhisheng was completely caught off guard. Before he could even struggle, the monster had dragged him to its mouth. The creature opened its gaping maw, a strange expression on its face, as it prepared to swallow Li Zhisheng whole.
Just as the situation became dire, Yao Long's arrow arrived. With a loud bang, the arrow burst into blue light and exploded on the monster's tongue. The creature recoiled in pain, loosening its grip on Li Zhisheng's tongue, allowing him to escape. However, before he could regain his footing, the shockwave from the explosion sent him staggering backward several steps.
But this was not his first encounter with such a situation. Quickly, Li Zhisheng sidestepped and placed one foot behind him for support, bracing himself against the powerful blast. At the same time, he seized the opportunity to quickly gather energy into a Black Sphere with one hand, aiming for the monster's closing jaws. Without hesitation, he shoved it inside and then swiftly retreated a few more steps.
In an instant, there was a muffled boom as the Black Sphere detonated within the monster's mouth, splitting its gaping maw in two. The creature's appearance became even more horrifying as it bared its mangled and bloodied mouth, lunging crazily at Li Zhisheng while letting out terrifying howls.
Seeing this, I shouted from behind, "Li Zhisheng, get out of the way!"
Hearing my voice, Li Zhisheng quickly leaped aside to avoid the attack. The monster missed and crashed headfirst into the tall wall, creating a large hole in it. Now trapped in the wall's opening, the creature was unable to move.
At that moment, Yao Long, who had been silent until now, suddenly shouted, "Shen Xu! Do you have any talismans left from before?!"
I quickly raised my voice and held up the talisman in my hand under the light of my lighter. "Yes! It's right here!"
As soon as I finished speaking, I felt a gust of wind rush past my hand holding the talisman. In an instant, it was whisked away by that strong wind and flew straight toward the Evil Spirit.
Time was of the essence; in the blink of an eye, Yao Long's arrow struck true with my talisman attached to it. There was a loud explosion as blue light erupted, incinerating the talisman that had stuck to the monster and forming a golden flame.
The golden flames enveloped the creature like a dazzling sun. At that moment, the monster let out a deafening wail of agony so loud that I instinctively covered my ears.
However, it did not struggle for long; in an instant, it was completely consumed by the golden flames and transformed into dust that scattered in the wind.
Just then, I heard Li Zhisheng's voice ahead of me. "Shen Xu, look what I found!" He approached my direction.
When he reached me under the light of my lighter, I saw that he was covered in dirt; his face and head were no exception. An unknown foul odor emanated from him—likely due to being wrapped up by that monster's tongue moments ago.
He stood in front of me, shaking a phone in his hand. "I just happened to find your phone, but unfortunately..."
He flipped the phone over, revealing a completely shattered screen and a bent body, clearly unusable.
I smiled and took the phone from him. "Looks like I won't need to replace my number after all..."
"Li Zhisheng," he said, "I helped you retrieve your phone, and you can't even show a little concern for me? I almost became that monster's next meal."
Hearing this, I patted his shoulder. "You look fine. Aside from being a bit dirty, where are your injuries? You weren't even attacked..." Suddenly, I remembered Yao Long behind me. Why hadn't he noticed the monster above us right away?
Thinking about it, I turned to look. It seemed Yao Long had already put away his Void Spirit; the blue flames of the Azure Spirit had completely vanished, leaving only darkness behind me.
"Yao Long? Are you still there?" I called out loudly.
For a moment, there was no response from Yao Long. Instead, I heard footsteps slowly approaching from the darkness.
At the sound, I heightened my vigilance, ready to dodge anything that might emerge from the shadows.
After a long wait, the footsteps finally entered the light cast by my lighter. I saw Yao Long covering his bleeding shoulder as he softly asked, "Are you all okay?"
Seeing this, Li Zhisheng hurried forward to support him while I quickly moved to his side. "We're all fine, but how did you get hurt?!"
Yao Long was tearing off a sleeve with one hand to tie around his injured arm as he explained to us, "I was busy helping you when a ghost ambushed me. It's just a minor scrape; nothing serious." He swiftly bandaged his wound.
Then he glanced at the hole in the wall made by the monster. "Aren't you trying to get into the Cemetery? The entrance is right ahead."
"I see it..." I replied. "But now that I've got my phone back, I suspect that thing we just killed was the old man I saw earlier, and the dismemberment case at the Amusement Park was probably caused by him too."
Li Zhisheng, who was standing nearby, picked up on my thoughts and said, "Well, from the looks of him, he might just be a particularly powerful Evil Spirit. He keeps absorbing the deceased Wraiths, which is why he possesses such strength..." At this point, Li Zhisheng paused, as if he had thought of something else.
Noticing his hesitation, I pressed on, "What’s wrong? Did you think of something?"
He replied, "While I also believe that the old man we just saw killed was indeed him, I can't shake the feeling that something is off. There's an unsettling feeling in my heart."
"I know what you're thinking..." I said. "You’re wondering why, given his power, he would let things come to light and attract police investigation, even making it to the news, right?"
Upon hearing this, Li Zhisheng exclaimed, "Yes, exactly! Don’t you find that strange?"
Meanwhile, Yao Long interjected, "Aren't you here to find ghosts? Now that you've seen one and dealt with it, why bother with any hidden truths? It’s not our concern anyway..."
"No, I think this matter isn't over yet..." I interrupted Yao Long. "I feel like there might be something else going on here. Moreover, that Evil Spirit was completely destroyed by the talisman paper. This means I can't record it in my Sheepskin Book, so I still need more ghosts..."
