“Worm King?!” I asked, bewildered.
“Yes, Worm King…” the innkeeper confirmed. “If your friend hadn’t undergone a long period of growth, I doubt I would have sensed the aura of the Worm King on him…”
“Can you tell me in detail what this Worm King is all about?” I pressed.
The innkeeper sighed, seeming very reluctant, but after a moment's hesitation, she began to speak. “I thought I had escaped from all of this, but it seems I cannot avoid it…”
She then recounted the tale of the Worm King. It turned out that the Worm King was once a leader of a tribe known for their mastery of witchcraft and Gu Poison, using poisonous insects and herbs to concoct various strange techniques.
Later, this Worm King developed an extremely powerful Gu Technique that could bury Gu Insects deep within a person's body, only to erupt when the time was right. What would happen after the eruption was unknown to anyone but the Worm King himself. Because this particular Gu Poison was so potent and nearly impossible to break, the Worm King named it after himself.
However, due to internal divisions within the tribe, it split into two factions: the Black Miao and the White Miao. As a result, this Gu Technique was completely lost, remaining only in the memories of those who had used it.
The innkeeper had once been a master of Gu Poison herself, but her skills had brought her trouble. She did not elaborate on what kind of trouble it was; she merely brushed over it lightly.
As for how she knew that Yao Long possessed the aura of the Worm King, it was because she had some understanding of Gu Techniques. Some powerful Gu Techniques emit a unique aura that only those who practice witchcraft can detect. Yao Long’s Gu was particularly strong and had been growing inside him for quite some time, which is why it released such an unusual aura.
After hearing her explanation, I found myself confused and asked, “If that’s all there is to it, why didn’t you just say so instead of running away…”
Upon hearing this, she explained, “Buddy, you don’t understand. The reason so few people know about the Worm King is that almost everyone who has mentioned it has died; only a very few have managed to avoid this disaster…”
At this point, I noticed that under the dim light, the innkeeper's expression grew increasingly grave, her furrowed brow reflecting deep concern.
“If what you say is true, then knowing about the Worm King means we might both be facing some kind of disaster?” I found it hard to believe.
“In fact, I’ve heard rumors like that too,” she replied. “But I’ve never experienced it myself and don’t know what will actually happen. That’s why I wanted to run.”
Seeing that she seemed to have said all she could, I thanked her and insisted on giving her some money as a token of appreciation. Finally, I turned back toward the dining area while she simply walked away on her own.
Back at the restaurant, as soon as I sat down, Li Zhisheng hurriedly asked, "How did it go? You were gone for so long; did you find out anything?"
I nodded and recounted everything I had heard to everyone. Yao Long, upon hearing this, seemed incredulous. He reached back to touch his own spine and said, "Worm King? Is what I have on me that powerful?"
"I don't know," I replied. "That's just what the restaurant owner said, but I can't verify if it's true or not."
"No wonder when I went to find those Miao Gu masters before, they couldn't tell me what was on me. It turns out it hasn't fully developed yet..." Yao Long didn't pay attention to me; he was lost in thought, muttering to himself.
At this moment, seeing that everyone was preoccupied with their own thoughts and staring seriously at the various dishes in front of them without touching their chopsticks, I decided to break the silence. "Alright, we need to eat something. Regardless of Yao Long's Gu Technique or the Death Apostle situation, we can figure that out later. Right now, it's time to eat."
With that, I picked up my chopsticks first and grabbed a bug, closing my eyes and tossing it into my mouth. Initially, I felt a bit repulsed by these things, but after trying one, I realized they weren't as bad as they looked; in fact, they were somewhat delicious.
"Mm~ actually quite tasty! You guys should try some..." I encouraged everyone to join in.
Yao Long wasted no time and dug in without hesitation. Li Zhisheng, however, after much persuasion from the others and with an extremely pained expression, managed to eat a little bit but admitted afterward that it tasted pretty good.
Hu Fang just sat quietly beside us, watching us eat without even touching her chopsticks...
"Hu Fang, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" I asked with concern.
Hearing this, Hu Fang forced a smile and said, "No, I'm fine. It's just that I really can't bring myself to eat this..."
"Weren't you the one who insisted on eating bugs? Why are you suddenly hesitant?" I asked while continuing to eat.
After hesitating for a moment at my question, Hu Fang replied, "Actually, I'm still really afraid of bugs... It's just that I heard you all talking about Miao Gu and things like that before; it seemed related to bugs. I wanted to help out, but I don't know anything about it and can't be of any assistance... So I thought maybe you all could eat some bugs and see if it would help..."
As she spoke, Hu Fang lowered her head, looking somewhat aggrieved. Realizing this made me aware that no matter what had happened before, I had been reluctant to share anything with Hu Fang for fear she would feel anxious or scared. But now that I thought about it, it seemed that my silence had left her completely unaware of our current situation.
Thinking about it, I looked at Hu Fang, patted her shoulder, and softly said, "You really helped a lot this time. Thanks to you, I was able to discover such an important clue, and I also got to enjoy such delicious food."
Hu Fang's face lit up at my words. She grabbed the chopsticks in front of her and exclaimed, "Really? Is this stuff really that good?!"
"Yeah~ Give it a try..."
She happily picked up a bug but hesitated just before eating it. After looking at the appearance of those bugs, she shivered and put the chopsticks down, pouting, "No way, I'm scared~"
Seeing this, everyone couldn't help but laugh. Eventually, since she really couldn't bring herself to eat it, we ordered some other dishes for her, and she managed to eat a little.
After finishing our meal and settling the bill, we walked home. It was already nine o'clock in the evening. Since it was late autumn and night had fallen, the temperature around us was a bit chilly, and many pedestrians had already gone home early.
Just then, I noticed a crowd gathered not far ahead, with murmurs of discussion rising from among them. Several police cars were parked nearby, and some officers were busy dispersing the crowd to maintain order at the scene...
