“Did something happen up ahead?!” I felt a wave of anxiety wash over me.
“...Let’s go take a look.” Yao Long also became serious, as if his keen insight had detected something amiss.
Without further ado, everyone hurried toward the crowd that was gathering. As we approached, we saw that a yellow police tape had been set up ahead, and officers were methodically handling a situation within the cordoned area.
I squeezed my way in, and as soon as I entered, I noticed several forensic experts crouched around a body, discussing something while centipedes and other poisonous insects crawled out from near the corpse.
“What happened up there?!” Li Zhisheng, unable to see what was going on, stood on tiptoe and craned his neck to peer ahead.
“It looks like someone has died,” Yao Long replied.
I focused intently on the body lying on the ground, trying to discern who it was. Just then, the forensic experts stood up, preparing to cover the corpse with a white sheet.
In that fleeting moment before the body was covered, I caught a glimpse of the face—it was the hotel owner who had previously informed me about the Worm King.
Her expression was one of terror, lying motionless on the ground, with insects occasionally crawling out of her mouth.
“This…” I was stunned by the sight before me. Could it be true what the owner had said—that discussing the Worm King would bring disaster? From her facial expression, it seemed she had seen something horrifying before she died…
As these thoughts raced through my mind, a cold sweat broke out all over my body. Everyone present had talked about the Worm King; were we all destined to meet such an end?!
“Quick, let’s get out of here…” I turned to Yao Long, Li Zhisheng, and Hu Fang, pushing my way back through the crowd. We ran back to our rented apartment.
Breathless as we entered, Li Zhisheng asked in confusion, “What exactly is going on? Shen Xu, do you know that dead person?”
After catching my breath for a moment, I replied, “Not just me; you all have seen her. The one who died is the hotel owner…”
“How could this happen… Did you kill her?!” Hu Fang exclaimed in shock.
I waved my hand dismissively. “Don’t be ridiculous; how could I possibly have killed her…”
“No, Hu Fang has a point. The last person she saw was you; it’s hard not to suspect you…” Li Zhisheng interrupted.
Hearing Li Zhisheng's words, my heart tightened. It indeed felt possible that the police might come knocking, and with the hotel owner dead for no reason, if it turned out to be related to me, I would have no way to defend myself.
"That's not all..." I said. "The hotel owner once mentioned that discussing the Worm King could bring disaster, and her death is likely connected to that disaster... We have also talked about this matter, so what we need to worry about now is whether we might end up dead like her."
Li Zhisheng pondered for a moment and replied, "Right now, we have no idea why she died, so it's a bit premature to jump to conclusions. However, your concerns are not entirely unfounded..." He paused and continued, "How about this? Tonight, we take turns keeping watch. If anything happens, we'll be able to notice it in time."
"Yeah, it seems that's the only option we have..." I nodded in agreement.
Afterward, everyone took a short break, changed their clothes, and checked themselves for any abnormalities. Once we confirmed that there was nothing wrong with our bodies, we felt a bit more at ease. Then, we dared not separate any further and gathered in the living room to discuss the Worm King and Death Apostle while planning our next steps.
Before we knew it, midnight had arrived. Li Zhisheng glanced at his phone and said, "It's already twelve o'clock. According to the plan, I'll take the first watch, followed by Shen Xu, then Yao Long. Hu Fang can rest well. Each of us will keep watch for two hours..."
I nodded and said, "Alright, keep an eye out. If you notice anything unusual, wake us up..."
With that, I leaned back on the sofa and rested alongside Yao Long and Hu Fang...
I don't know how long it had been when I gradually fell asleep. In my deep slumber, I began to dream. In the dream, I found myself enveloped in endless darkness; there was nothing around me, and the silence was unsettling.
I felt a profound fear stemming from this boundless darkness. Despite my overwhelming sense of helplessness filled with anxiety and restlessness, I clearly knew I was dreaming, which provided me with some comfort.
However, even so, I still couldn't wake up. In the darkness, I kept reaching out my hands in search of something tangible to hold onto.
Just then, countless blood-red dots appeared before me in the darkness; they flickered as if they were some kind of monster. "What is that...?" I muttered to myself as I tried to feel around for something to defend myself with, but aside from my clothes, there was nothing on me...
As I grew increasingly tense, those red dots suddenly rushed toward me like a pack of wolves.
As they drew closer and closer, I could see clearly that they were not monsters but rather a swarm of gigantic poisonous insects—some as large as an adult human. The red dots came from the enormous eyes of spiders nearby that were accompanied by several centipedes and scorpions measuring five or six meters long.
The insects surged toward me like a tidal wave. At that moment, even though I knew I was dreaming, a sliver of fear crept into my heart.
But just then, I suddenly sensed a strong Killing Intent rising around me. Accompanying this Killing Intent was a familiar voice ringing in my ear.
"What are you doing?! Waiting to die?!"
“Void Spirit, how did you appear?!” I exclaimed in shock, glancing to the side. However, as everything around me was pitch black, I could see nothing and could only discern his presence by sound; he must be nearby.
“I just passed through! If you die, it will be very troublesome for me!”
“Am I not dreaming? How could I die?” I was utterly confused by his words.
“This is not the time for explanations, get out of the way!”
Void Spirit shouted for me to move aside, and I felt a powerful force touch my shoulder, abruptly pushing me to the side.
At that moment, I sensed Void Spirit unleashing an unparalleled power, and in an instant, half of the glowing red spider eyes in front of me vanished.
Then, from not far away, Void Spirit's voice came again, urgent and anxious: “Don’t dawdle! Quickly hide, this is not an ordinary dream!”
