"Yes, an illusion. How did I not think of that at first..." I whispered in a state of panic, while thinking to myself, "This Soul Sealing Talisman is said to be incredibly powerful, and it's rumored that there is only one in existence. Yet Yin Li has used it to suppress ordinary Evil Spirits, which seems quite excessive unless he has some special purpose..."
"And he had previously used an illusion on me, showing me someone who didn't actually exist. In other words, could it be possible that he, like that child, is using illusions to fake his own death and thus remain hidden..."
The more I thought about it, the more fearful I became. It felt as if the entire world was an illusion created by Yin Li, everything appearing extremely unreal. At the same time, I realized that since encountering Yin Li, I had never seen anyone else use anything related to illusions or illusion techniques. The only exception was the current encounter with the insect that could affect one's spirit and soul, which could barely be considered an illusion; nothing else was similar.
In other words, illusions might be an incredibly powerful ability that can only be wielded when one's strength reaches a certain height... Of course, all of this was merely my speculation; as for the truth, I was completely in the dark.
But at this moment, what I felt more than anything was a fear of the unknown. Who exactly is Yin Li? What did he intend to achieve by drawing me into this event from the very beginning? Could it be that he is not dead after all? Is he truly the mastermind behind everything?!
These questions kept swirling in my mind, creating a chaotic mess of fear, unease, and anxiety that made me feel like an ant on a hot stove—restless and unable to sit still.
"Did you think of something important? You look like you have a nail under you," Yao Long pulled my thoughts back. I replied, "What nail? That's more like sitting on pins and needles... It's nothing; I just recalled some past events."
I took a deep breath to steady myself and asked Yao Long, "Earlier, you mentioned being attacked in the Mountain and then fainting before being taken to a village. Since you were unconscious, you wouldn't know where that village is. How are we supposed to find it?"
Yao Long said confidently, "Don't worry about finding the way; leave that to me. Even if it's an unknown remote area, I can find it. After all, I've been on missions for Yang Master for so long; it's not for nothing."
Seeing Yao Long's confidence reassured me somewhat; I had no choice but to trust him.
After that, we traveled in silence for a while. Despite the quiet journey, I remained restless—whether it was due to my lingering fears about Yin Li or the dread of encountering Miao Gu ahead...
Eventually, we arrived at Zhenkang County. As soon as we got out of the car, Yao Long led me out of the county from the west side and along a mountain path toward Mountain. However, having gone without rest for so long and not having eaten much during our journey, I was already exhausted. If we were to encounter any battles or conflicts now, I would surely perish.
Things rarely go as planned; the more I tried to avoid trouble, the more it seemed to find me.
As we ventured deeper, even the original mountain path disappeared beneath our feet, replaced by a carpet of dry, yellow leaves. I had no idea what lay beneath them. Suddenly, Yao Long came to a halt, his brow furrowed as he scanned the surrounding forest.
"Is there danger?!" I asked, knowing that whenever Yao Long wore that expression, it was never a good sign.
"Shh," he gestured for silence and pressed me down, crouching low to the ground himself, listening intently to the sounds of the forest.
It was evening; the last rays of sunlight filtered through the dense canopy above us, filling the air with the calls of various birds and insects, creating a symphony of jungle sounds.
After a long silence, I heard nothing but the chirping and calling around us. Yet Yao Long whispered, "Stay alert. We're getting close to the border; it's not safe here. There could be Yin Masters or Yang Masters around. Even if we encounter some border-crossing smugglers, we need to be cautious..."
He trailed off suddenly. Following his gaze, I spotted two suspicious figures emerging from the nearby thicket. They were dressed in green camouflage outfits and wore masks, with what appeared to be handguns strapped at their waists. The metal of their guns glinted ominously in the fading sunlight.
"This..." I started to speak, but Yao Long quickly covered my mouth. His grip was tight, and combined with my lack of sleep, I lost my balance and began to fall backward.
Panic surged through me; if those two noticed us, we would be in serious trouble. It didn't matter whether we had Void Spirits for protection; they were armed with real weapons. Even with Void Spirits on our side, taking a couple of bullets would be disastrous.
Seeing me tumble, Yao Long reached out in a hurry to catch me. However, he panicked and missed his grip. With a rustling sound, I fell into the pile of leaves and began rolling down the slope.
I tumbled several times, scraping my elbows and knees against hidden stones beneath the foliage, pain shooting through me as cold sweat broke out. Finally, I managed to grab hold of a slender tree trunk just in time to stop my descent.
In that moment of stillness, I heard heavy footsteps approaching from not far ahead. The steps crunched loudly on the leaves as they hurried toward our location.
I quickly steadied myself and looked up, only to see Yao Long not coming down to help me. Instead, he had already drawn the Azure Spirit, standing tall with the bow aimed at the two figures in Camouflage Outfits running towards him.
As they ran, the two men pulled out handguns from their waists. Just as they were about to aim their guns at Yao Long, he had already formed two arrows from his blood and released them with a swift "whoosh."
With a flash of red light, the two men in Camouflage Outfits screamed as their handguns fell to the ground. They stumbled and fell onto the ground.
However, in their fall, they landed right next to the fallen handgun. One of them quickly picked it up and aimed it at Yao Long.
"Yao Long, watch out!" I shouted in terror from my position on the ground, still unable to get up.
But my warning came too late. Just as I uttered the last word, there was a loud "bang" as the man pulled the trigger, and the sound of gunfire echoed through the jungle...
