With the sound of a gunshot, Yao Long had already released an arrow from his Azure Spirit before the shot rang out, the bowstring aimed directly at the dark muzzle of the gun.
In an instant, the bullet collided with the arrow formed from Yao Long's blood. Although the arrow did not completely block the bullet, it altered its trajectory, causing it to strike a nearby tree and emit a wisp of green smoke.
"Even in such a fatigued state, Yao Long can accurately judge the opponent's subtle movements and react swiftly. Truly a battle-hardened warrior..."
As I thought this, Yao Long quickly drew another Wooden Arrow and shot it forth. The arrow flew straight toward the person preparing to fire again.
"Is Yao Long trying to kill him?!" I was startled.
However, the arrow did not fly directly into the man's body but instead lodged itself straight into the barrel of his handgun, jamming it. Seizing the moment while the man was still stunned, Yao Long took a quick step forward and bent down to snatch the gun from his hands.
At that moment, I stood up and watched as Yao Long pulled the arrow from the gun barrel and aimed the handgun at the two men in Camouflage Outfits lying on the ground. "You look like smugglers, don't you?!"
The two men stammered something in a foreign language. Although I was a bit far away, I could still tell that what they were saying was definitely not English.
Even though I couldn't understand their language, their expressions and gestures suggested they were pleading for mercy from Yao Long.
But Yao Long didn't grasp their meaning at all and scolded them, "What nonsense are you talking about! Speak Chinese!"
The two men couldn't understand Chinese either. Seeing Yao Long glaring at them only made them more fearful; they dared not breathe a word and simply huddled on the ground with their heads covered.
Seeing this, I hurried over to Yao Long's side. "Let me handle this..." I took the handgun from Yao Long's hands and aimed it at the two men on the ground. "China does not welcome smugglers! Get lost!" I said in English.
It seemed they understood my meaning as they scrambled away, rolling and crawling back along their original path until they gradually disappeared from our sight. Watching them flee in such a panic, it was clear they wouldn't dare to cross borders again.
Finally, I sighed in relief and handed the handgun back to Yao Long. "You're good with this; it's better off in your hands..." As I passed him the gun, my hands trembled slightly since it was my first time handling a firearm.
Yao Long took the gun, skillfully checked the magazine, and said, "This is a homemade pistol. Its power and accuracy aren't very high, but compared to a bow and arrow, firearms are more intimidating to those people." With that, he loaded the magazine and slid the bullets into his waistband.
"But back to the point, what did you say to them earlier that made them run off?" Yao Long asked while securing Azure Spirit on his back.
I smiled and replied, "Oh, nothing much. I just told them we don't welcome smugglers. By the way..." I suddenly remembered something and asked Yao Long, "You seem quite skilled with that gun. This isn't your first time handling one, is it?"
Seeing my interest in firearms, Yao Long looked a bit proud as he walked forward while explaining, "In the past, I often went to some remote places close to the border. Seeing guns was quite common there. However, I prefer using a bow and arrow; guns are too loud and inconvenient to carry. So even if I come across one, I wouldn't use it much..."
Just then, he seemed to notice something and bent down to rummage through the fallen leaves at his feet.
"What are you looking for?" I asked in confusion.
After a moment, Yao Long held up a piece of blackened cloth and sniffed it near his nose. "Look, this is a piece of fabric stained with blood. Someone must have been here..."
I took the darkened, hardened piece of cloth from his hand and examined it before crouching down to inspect the ground closely. "Hmm, based on the condition of this cloth and the moisture of the ground, it seems this blood-stained piece was left here two or three days ago. Also, it hasn't rained here recently..."
"How do you know when this was left?" Yao Long asked, puzzled.
I explained, "The blood on this cloth has already deteriorated and turned black. Generally, blood will gradually change to black after some time and harden. However, since you can still smell the blood on this cloth, it hasn't been too long since it was left."
"Have you often carried out missions before? How do you know all this?" Yao Long looked even more confused.
"Don't you ever get hurt or bleed from minor accidents? You can figure these things out just by observing; it's not that remarkable," I said dismissively as I tossed the cloth aside and picked up some leaves from the ground to wipe my hands.
"What should we do next?" I asked Yao Long after brushing off my hands. After what had just happened, I was wide awake now.
Hearing this, Yao Long glanced around thoughtfully for a moment before saying, "If I'm not mistaken, after we cross this mountain and go around another one, we should be able to see a village."
"Well, without further ado, let's get going. If we delay, it will be dark soon. Traveling at night is undoubtedly more dangerous..." With that, we set off again.
Looking at the mountain ahead, I thought we could cross it in just a few minutes, but to my surprise, it took us nearly an hour to reach the summit. By then, the light was fading, and the forest echoed with distant wolf howls.
"No wonder there were bloody rags back there; it seems this mountain is home to quite a few ferocious beasts..." Before I could finish my sentence, a pair of pale green eyes appeared ahead of us. Judging by its height, it resembled a wolf or a large dog.
"Don't move..." Yao Long raised a hand to stop me and whispered with focused intensity, "There must be wolves ahead... The light hasn't completely faded yet, and in the dim sunlight, a wolf's eyes will emit a faint green glow. Since there's one in front of us, there are surely more nearby..."
Hearing this, I quickly glanced around. A chill ran down my spine as I noticed countless pairs of glowing green eyes surrounding us in the jungle, all fixated on us, making my heart race with fear.
But then I remembered that with Yao Long's skills, dealing with these wolves shouldn't be a problem.
Just as I was thinking this, Yao Long pulled out his pistol from his waist and handed it to me. "Take this; I'll use my bow. In the jungle, never look directly at the wolf pack. Once, I almost ended up as their meal..."
