Seeing Yao Long swallow, the person behind him finally seemed a bit relieved. He turned to us and said, "Well, you all should rest." He pointed to a room across from us, seemingly indicating that we should sleep there. He then slowly walked into the room where the woman had entered earlier.
Once they left, Yao Long opened his palm and laid it in front of me. I saw that strange insect-like creature lying in his hand. Upon closer inspection, I realized that this creature was alive, its shriveled legs flailing about as if trying to struggle and get up.
Seeing this, I felt a chill run down my spine. Thanks to Yao Long's quick thinking; if it had been me, I might have already eaten that insect. We were worried that our conversation would be overheard by the man and woman inside, so we got up and moved into the room the man had indicated.
After closing the somewhat decayed wooden door, we lit a candle. It was then that I realized this was not a place for people to stay; it was clearly a storage room. The floor was cluttered with hay and some farming tools, and an unpleasant odor emanated from the hay, likely due to something rotting.
Moreover, with only a small window about a foot square on the walls, the air inside was stuffy and hardly conducive for resting.
"What exactly is this thing?" I asked, holding the candle to illuminate Yao Long's hand where the struggling insect still lay.
"Without a doubt, this is some kind of Gu Technique, but I'm not sure what kind of insect it is," Yao Long replied as he dropped the creature onto the ground and crushed it underfoot. It let out a squeak before being reduced to a puddle of pus.
Seeing this, I furrowed my brow and said, "It seems we've fallen into another trap; there's definitely something strange about this village."
With that thought in mind, I began pacing back and forth in the room, trying to connect the known clues into a complete truth. Previously, I had discovered blood-stained rags in the deep mountains, then encountered unknown smugglers, followed by an attack from wolves, and finally being rescued by the villagers here. According to their accounts, it seemed there had been some incidents of missing persons in the village...
As I pondered this, my mind felt like a tangled mess. I couldn't tell if it was because the situation itself was so confusing or if it was due to my prolonged lack of rest causing my brain to malfunction.
Just as I was feeling anxious, I suddenly heard some strange noises—rustling sounds coming from a nearby pile of hay.
Upon hearing the noise, I instinctively turned around and shone the candlelight towards the source of the sound while subconsciously stepping back a few paces.
"Did you hear that noise?!" I nervously asked Yao Long in the darkness beside me.
But the room was enveloped in dead silence, with only the strange sounds emanating from the pile of grass, and I could not hear Yao Long's voice at all.
“Yao Long?” I called out again, puzzled, and slowly turned around, directing the candlelight towards where Yao Long had been. As the light moved through the dark room, a figure gradually came into view. I saw that the person was wearing the same clothes as Yao Long, standing with his back to me in the corner, swaying from side to side without uttering a word.
“Yao Long, what’s wrong?!” I asked anxiously as I walked toward the corner. Just then, Yao Long suddenly turned around, and I saw his eyes bulging out before rolling down his cheeks. As his eyeballs fell, countless centipedes and spiders began to crawl out from the hollow sockets of his eyes, followed by more emerging from his mouth, nose, and ears...
As more and more poisonous creatures poured out from his features, his body began to wither away, gradually becoming nothing but a skin bag. At that moment, those insects swarming out of him lunged toward me in droves. I was so shocked that I couldn't speak; my eyes widened in terror as I gaped and stumbled backward.
As I retreated, I felt something under my feet. Looking down, I saw a half-human-sized spider lying beside me, its other half hidden in the pile of grass in the corner.
Startled by my step on one of its legs, it jumped up and lunged at my face. In a panic, I quickly drew Jiang Ling from behind me, preparing to stab it into my chest to awaken Void Spirit...
But just then, a hand suddenly reached out from beside me and grabbed my wrist holding Jiang Ling, preventing me from awakening Void Spirit. Immediately after, I felt a sharp pain in my back as if someone had pinched me hard.
With that pain jolting me back to reality, I realized that I was standing in the corner with one hand gripping Jiang Ling ready to stab myself in the chest, and it was Yao Long who had grabbed my wrist.
“What’s wrong? Are you having hallucinations again?!” he asked with concern.
At this moment, I was drenched in sweat, and the candle in my hand trembled uncontrollably. “I... I think so,” I replied somewhat flustered.
Then I put Jiang Ling back into my backpack and confirmed with the candlelight that Yao Long before me was indeed real before feeling somewhat relieved.
“This damn hallucination keeps popping up; it's making it hard for me to tell what's real and what's an illusion...” As I leaned against the wall, I wiped the sweat off my forehead repeatedly.
"This won't work. If you keep holding on like this, you're going to have a mental breakdown. We need to come up with a solution..." Yao Long began to ponder.
At that moment, as soon as I relaxed, my eyelids grew heavy. Gradually, I felt my limbs losing control, and my body, leaning against the wall, slowly slid down due to exhaustion.
"Hey, don't fall asleep..." Yao Long noticed I was dozing off and hurriedly tried to shake me awake. But I was so fatigued that it wasn't just sleepiness; I was on the verge of passing out.
No matter how violently Yao Long shook me, I couldn't be roused. Gradually, I felt my body come into contact with a pile of dry grass in the corner.
Just then, I suddenly felt something prick my backside, causing me to jump up in pain. "W-what was that..." I fumbled as I rubbed my rear and turned to look at the pile of grass on the ground.
"Is there something in there?" Yao Long asked, seeing me awake. He looked curiously at the pile of grass in the corner and stepped forward to kick it aside.
As Yao Long kicked it away, under the dim candlelight, I saw a pile of white bones among the hay, and from within it, I even spotted a human skull...
