"Everything I've done before? Are you talking about the Onizuka I dealt with?" I blurted out without thinking.
The voice in my mind replied, "That's right. It is precisely because of the Onizuka you dealt with that a large number of residual spirits have flooded in here."
"Cut the crap! How do I get out of here? I want to leave this damn place!" The Void Spirit within me was growing impatient. I didn't even notice when it had silently slipped inside, listening to my conversation with the voice in my head.
Hearing the Void Spirit's question, the voice did not show any annoyance; it continued in its gentle tone, "You shouldn't be asking me that. I am not the ruler of this space..."
"You're not the ruler? Then who is?"
"The one who rules here is truly the master of the body you inhabit, Shen Xu..."
Hearing my name sent a shock through me. I thought, "How does it know my name? How have I become the ruler here? Isn't it the one guiding me all along?!"
As confusion washed over me, I couldn't help but feel increasingly anxious. In such an empty and unknown space, even the strongest will could be affected by its disturbances, leading to negative emotions. Moreover, I was currently troubled by that mysterious voice in my mind.
For a moment, it was hard to control my emotions. Just then, I noticed that the countless desiccated corpses floating around me suddenly began to convulse. They appeared extremely agitated and restless, twisting their bodies in grotesque ways.
Surrounded by those twitching corpses, unease crept into my heart. At this moment, I had neither Jiang Ling nor any talismans to ward off evil spirits. If those corpses came at me, wouldn't I be utterly defenseless?
The more I thought about it, the tenser I became. The intertwining feelings of anxiety and agitation stirred within me, driving me toward madness. Meanwhile, the Void Spirit inside me seemed even more impatient; it clearly despised this place. Because of its presence within me, I could feel its power mirroring my own unrest.
"Shen Xu?! Do you know how to get out of here?! Think of something! Don't just stand there staring blankly!" the Void Spirit urged impatiently.
My emotions were already unstable, and hearing it speak to me like that only made me more irritated. "What can I do?! Don't you know this place is called Dream Mound? Why don't you come up with a solution?!"
Suddenly, for reasons unknown, my argument with the Void Spirit escalated into a heated quarrel. As our verbal sparring continued, my frustration gradually morphed into anger, and it seemed we were on the brink of a full-blown shouting match.
At that moment, I noticed the surrounding corpses reacting more violently to the fluctuations in our emotions, drawing closer to me with each passing second.
Seeing this, I furrowed my brows and glared, shouting, "Enough! Is this ever going to end? This isn't the time to shift blame; can we please calm down and think of a solution?"
The Void Spirit retorted in the same tone, "Well, why don’t you come up with something? What good does it do to just complain? I only have a vague impression of this place. Stop expecting others to solve your problems; use your brain for once!"
His words ignited my anger further, and I felt a surge of rage boiling within me. Just as I was about to snap back at him, the once bright Snowy Space around us suddenly plunged into darkness, as if we were enveloped by a starless night sky.
With visibility lost, I couldn't gauge how far away the corpses were anymore, and an inexplicable sense of fear washed over me.
But then it struck me why that voice in my head had warned me. I quickly suppressed my emotions and spoke to the Void Spirit in a calmer tone, "Let’s stop arguing. This space seems to change with my emotions; all my negative feelings could lead us into even more danger."
As soon as I finished speaking, a gaunt and yellowed face suddenly appeared before me. It resembled a dried-up skeleton, its eerie visage twisted into a horrifying expression. Being so close made its features even more grotesque.
I instinctively recoiled, trying to escape from the corpse, but as I took a step back, I felt something hard press against my lower back. A chill shot through me.
Realizing the danger, I clenched my fists and swung around to strike whatever was behind me. At that moment, the Void Spirit unleashed its power within me, channeling it into my clenched fist. With a whoosh, my heavy punch connected with the corpse's face behind me, sending its head flying off.
Hearing that sound startled me at first; however, knowing I was surrounded by those corpses left no room for hesitation. Using momentum, I drew an arc in the air with my fist, feeling it connect multiple times with the corpses around me as their bones cracked under the impact.
But due to my excessive force and the lack of solid ground beneath my feet, I lost balance and began to tilt sideways. It felt like I was about to crash into the pile of corpses; I could almost smell their foul stench wafting around me.
At this critical moment, the Void Spirit shouted, "I'm coming!"
Hearing this, I instinctively relaxed my body and relinquished control to the Void Spirit. But just then, a withered corpse behind me had already grabbed me tightly with its bony arm. Its strength was immense, and with just one hand, it halted my descent and pulled me directly in front of it.
At that moment, I was lifted before the corpse, which opened its hollow mouth wide and thrust out a tongue as dry as twigs, lunging towards my face to bite.
As the gaping maw of the corpse drew closer, I tried to control my body to escape, but since the Void Spirit had taken over, I couldn't issue any commands to myself.
"Do something!" I shouted in terror at the Void Spirit.
But the Void Spirit showed no response. It seemed to be completely focused on brewing something, its eyes fixed intently on the corpse before us while its body remained motionless, allowing that hollow mouth to inch closer and closer. More corpses began to emerge around me, and I found myself surrounded.
"Just a pile of bones dares to act so arrogantly before me..."
