I followed the direction of Li Zhisheng's finger and saw a bright red bud growing on Haoyang's arm. The bud was only the size of a thumb and swayed back and forth in the wind.
Seeing this, my heart sank. I looked at the dazed Haoyang in front of me and felt utterly lost, unsure of how to handle the situation.
At that moment, I noticed that the remaining fireflies, which had not been eliminated, were continuously pouring in from a distance. They were gathering towards us, threatening to form a swarm once again.
Just then, a ray of dawn broke through, and the sun began to rise slowly from behind the mountains. As I watched the sun ascend, an inexplicable glimmer of hope ignited within me.
As the sun rose higher, the fireflies began to die when exposed to its light, falling from the sky like a rain of blood.
Seeing this, I let out a slight sigh of relief, calming my mind as I gradually withdrew the power of the Void Spirit.
"It seems these damned bugs can't stand sunlight," Li Zhisheng muttered to himself while glancing worriedly at the still motionless Haoyang.
Suddenly, Haoyang's body erupted with violent coughs, and he spat out a mouthful of blood. The red bud on his hand began to wither and turn black under the sunlight.
Before long, the blackened bud fell from Haoyang's hand, leaving behind a small hole.
"Haoyang, are you okay?" I asked with concern.
Haoyang steadied himself and caught his breath. "Just now, a bug flew into my mouth when I wasn't paying attention, and then I couldn't move... But I'm feeling better now. However..." He coughed several times again, spitting out more blood with each fit.
"But what? Do you feel anything unusual?" I pressed on.
Li Zhisheng interjected, "Don't rush to ask him right now. Look at him; he doesn't look well. Let him rest for a bit."
I nodded in agreement and helped Haoyang sit down on the steps by the street alongside Li Zhisheng.
After resting for a moment, Haoyang seemed to improve slightly. "Although I can move now, it still feels like there's something inside me. But with this bright sunlight, that thing seems to be temporarily suppressed."
As he spoke, he shook his pant legs, and several black buds fell from them onto the ground.
"Is it possible that whatever is inside you might act up again by tonight?!"
"I'm not sure. I can only sense its presence..." Haoyang said, nervously touching his chest, looking visibly shaken.
It seemed that these Blood-colored Fireflies were like seeds; they might have entered the body through the seven orifices and then taken root. However, for some reason, they feared sunlight and could not grow in the daytime, even dying in its absence...
Thinking this over, I pondered for a moment before saying to Haoyang, "Since you can feel that something is still inside you, it means it hasn't been eliminated. If we let it remain in your body, it will surely become a major problem. We need to find a way to remove it as soon as possible."
"To untie the knot, one must find the person who tied it. We should go back to where this creature came from," Li Zhisheng chimed in, clearly on the same wavelength as me.
"Since we understand that now, let's hurry and set off... Haoyang, how are you feeling? Can you still walk?" I asked.
Haoyang nodded. "Yeah, you don't need to worry about me. I'm fine for now."
With that, the three of us got up and started our journey. At this point, the ground was already littered with countless corpses of Blood-colored Fireflies, making the entire street look like a massive red carpet.
Stepping on the remains of those fireflies made me feel uneasy; I worried that those creatures might come back to life and attack us again. The more I thought about it, the more anxious I became, prompting me to quicken my pace.
Before long, we reached the exit of the town to the south. Looking back, the entire town was shrouded in a bloody hue; the streets were deserted, and there was an eerie silence all around. What had once been a lively town had now turned into a true Ghost Town.
"Sigh, what is meant to be will be," I mused when suddenly I noticed that the light was beginning to fade.
Looking up, I saw dark clouds gathering overhead; heavy rain was imminent.
"Let's move quickly; don't linger. We have to take the mountain path ahead, and it will be even harder to navigate if it rains," Li Zhisheng urged from ahead. Upon hearing this, I decided not to stay any longer and caught up with Li Zhisheng and Haoyang.
We left the town and followed the road up into the mountains. However, once we started climbing, I realized that although the mountain didn't seem steep at first glance and appeared relatively gentle, when I actually began walking on it, I found that the path was not only steep but also covered in loose stones that could easily cause one to slip.
During our ascent, Haoyang struggled due to his leg injury and nearly slipped down several times. He had to grab onto nearby trees and bushes just to keep moving forward. Meanwhile, Li Zhisheng had only one hand available; maintaining his balance was already challenging enough without being able to help Haoyang. As for me, I could barely support Haoyang while also trying to maintain my own balance.
We trudged along the mountain path, the three of us struggling with each step. It was hard to tell how long we had been walking when suddenly a flash of lightning streaked across the sky, followed by a deafening clap of thunder that made us all shudder.
Seeing the storm, Li Zhisheng remarked, "Isn't it dangerous to stay under trees during a thunderstorm? Look around us; we're surrounded by trees. What if we..."
Before Li Zhisheng could finish, a bolt of lightning struck a tree less than a hundred meters away from us. In an instant, the towering tree, taller than three people combined, erupted into flames, followed by another thunderous boom that echoed in our ears.
I was so startled that I stumbled back several steps, nearly dragging Haoyang down the mountain with me.
Grabbing hold of a nearby tree, I gasped for breath, still shaken. I shot an annoyed glance at Li Zhisheng and said, "You and your crow's mouth! You must have been blessed by Buddha to say such things. Please, for the love of all that's holy, stop talking nonsense or we won't even know how we died!"
Before I could scold him further, Li Zhisheng had already clamped his lips shut and was nodding vigorously at me, clearly feeling a bit frightened himself.
At that moment, heavy rain began to pour down. Large raindrops pelted against the leaves above us, turning the once quiet forest into a cacophony. The mountain path beneath our feet, already difficult to navigate, became even more slippery and treacherous due to the rain...
