"Ancient mirror? What kind of ancient mirror?"
The Death Apostle noticed my confusion and flipped through the Divine Anomalies Classic again, turning to the last page. He pointed to a corner of the page that illustrated the Nine Star Diagram and said, "Look, there’s a line of text here that I hadn’t noticed before. It refers to something similar to an ancient item called Yang Sui."
I stood by, unable to comprehend the words in the book, nor did I understand what the Death Apostle meant by Yang Sui, leaving me utterly bewildered. Just as I was about to ask, I heard Li Zhisheng, who had been resting with his eyes closed in a chair, suddenly speak up. "Yang Sui is a type of concave mirror used for fire starting. According to the Zhou Li, it states 'using its sunlight, the essence of the sun is used to ignite fire from the sun; hence it is named Yang Sui. Fire from wood is called Wooden Firestarter.'"
After hearing this, I quickly looked at Li Zhisheng, who remained still with his eyes closed. He wasn’t asleep; he was simply listening quietly to our conversation.
"Since you’re not asleep, why don’t you come over and join us? You might be able to provide some assistance," I suggested to Li Zhisheng.
"I’m feeling a bit tired; I’ll take a short nap. You can chat; I’ll just listen," he replied, turning his body away as if he didn’t want to join our discussion.
Seeing this, I didn’t press further and turned back to the Death Apostle. "Is the mirror you mentioned the same fire-starting mirror that Li Zhisheng just described?"
The Death Apostle nodded. "Li Zhisheng is indeed correct; however, my mirror is not Yang Sui but rather something similar to it. Its name is Soul Mirror. As the name suggests, it is a mirror that can reflect souls."
"That sounds intriguing, but what use is it if it can reflect souls? Li Zhisheng and Yao Long can see souls without this mirror. Although I have a bit more trouble and need to summon Void Spirits, with Yao Long and Li Zhisheng around, I don’t need to go through such great lengths just to see ghosts."
The Death Apostle replied, "That may be true, but since this book mentions that mirror, it must be significant. If possible, we might try to find it and see if we can locate the mirror."
"You mentioned helping someone find that mirror was a long time ago; do you even remember who you were helping?" I asked curiously.
The Death Apostle pondered for a moment. "I naturally don’t remember that detail, but I believe we might find a way to locate a second mirror."
"You mean there’s more than one of these mirrors in existence?"
"Exactly..." The Death Apostle affirmed confidently. "Although I don’t recall who I helped find the first mirror for, I do remember receiving information about it more than once. I think we should be able to find a second one."
"Is there a way? Just say it directly."
"If I remember correctly, that ancient mirror should be made of bronze. Since we're looking for bronze artifacts, we should search in places where bronze items are more abundant..."
Hearing this, I quickly interrupted him, saying, "Are you out of your mind? A bronze artifact? That's a national treasure level item! Do you want to lose your head? We barely managed to keep it safe; technically, your head is now public property. You can't just throw it away without our consent."
"No, no, you must have misunderstood..." The Death Apostle waved his hands repeatedly. "We're not trying to sell that thing for profit; we just want to borrow it. Once we're done, if you're willing, we can even return it to the National Museum. Besides, when did my head become public property?!"
Seeing his reaction, I thought about it and realized he had a point. Mainly, we weren't after wealth or fame; we just wanted to use that ancient mirror to unravel the mysteries in this book and seek a way to save our lives.
"Since you put it that way, I have nothing to refute. Let's make our next plan to find this ancient mirror. As for where the mirror might be located... you'll need to think of a way," I said.
"That works; it's part of my responsibilities anyway. However..." the Death Apostle replied, "all the relevant information is in my exhibition hall. I need to go back and get it."
"When are you going? I'll accompany you; it's not safe for you to go alone," I offered.
The Death Apostle nodded in agreement.
Afterward, we talked about his first encounter with the ancient mirror and who had commissioned him to help find it.
It turned out that before the Death Apostle joined Yang Master, a middle-aged man had asked him to help find a mirror. At that time, the man did not tell the Death Apostle that he was looking for a bronze mirror; he only referred to it as the Soul Mirror and gave a brief description of its function and general appearance.
The Death Apostle didn't think much of it at the time. Seeing the generous reward offered, he agreed without hesitation. Later on, after going through many connections and places, he discovered that what he was actually looking for was a national treasure level bronze mirror.
At that moment, he was so frightened that he nearly wanted to abandon the commission. However, driven by greed, he gritted his teeth and decided to continue.
Not long after, he finally found a household in a remote village and discovered the Soul Mirror he had been searching for in their home.
Due to its remote location, the antique awareness of the main household was quite weak; they merely regarded it as an ordinary broken piece of metal and even used it as a feeding bowl for their chickens.
At that moment, the Death Apostle did not directly approach the farmer to purchase it, knowing that the mirror held significant meaning. He dared not handle it himself and could only contact his client to negotiate the purchase with the farmer.
When buying the mirror, the client not only paid the Death Apostle double the agreed fee but also gave the villager a generous reward, enough for them to live without worry for the rest of their lives.
Upon receiving the money, the villager smiled broadly and expressed immense gratitude towards the client, bowing repeatedly. However, as the Death Apostle and the client were leaving, an unintentional remark from the villager sparked a hint of doubt in the Death Apostle's mind.
"If you need more of these bowls, just come back to us; we still have plenty..." those villagers said as I was leaving, remarked the Death Apostle.
"Plenty?! How can there be so many of such a precious bowl? Is there something special about that place?" I asked.
The Death Apostle pondered for a moment, then raised two fingers and said, "I suspect there are two possibilities. The first is that this place may have produced a lot of bronze in earlier years. The second is that it likely has significant ties to Yin Masters and Onmyoji..."
