After listening, I sighed quietly. As I suspected, this place was not affected by any epidemic; instead, it was plagued by a large number of ghosts. But who was behind this, and why were they doing it?
Just then, Li Zhisheng beside me asked, "What do you think? Should we find a way to sneak in and take a look?"
"Did you not see the police officers by the caution tape? If we rush in now, we'll definitely get caught. Let's observe the situation around here first."
With that, I began to circle around the perimeter with Li Zhisheng. The area marked by the caution tape was larger than I had expected; it not only surrounded the entire Huifeng District but also encompassed several nearby buildings. It took us at least half an hour to walk around.
"How many people have died here for the caution tape to cover such a large area? Is the death toll still rising?" I murmured to myself.
"I can't say for sure," he replied. "But from the looks of it, all the entrances and exits are sealed off. It won't be easy for us to get in."
"Even if it's not easy, we have to find a way in. We can't just wait here. Let's think of something tonight."
As we were discussing our strategy, a thought suddenly flashed through my mind. I hurriedly said to Li Zhisheng, "Wait! Since there are so many police officers nearby, wouldn't those lurking Vengeful Spirits have an easier time? Could they be in danger?!"
Hearing this, Li Zhisheng furrowed his brow. He rubbed his chin thoughtfully and said, "I'm afraid it's more than just danger; perhaps there have already been casualties, which is why this area is sealed off. Even the SWAT team has been deployed..."
He turned his gaze into the distance and pointed out a SWAT vehicle parked far away. Several armed police officers stood near the caution tape, and a few ambulances were nearby with paramedics in white uniforms busily attending to something.
"Given this situation, getting in to investigate will be even harder. With the SWAT team here, if we recklessly enter and get caught, we might end up in serious trouble."
"Let's head back and think of a plan. There aren't many people around here; if we keep wandering back and forth, it might raise suspicions."
I nodded in agreement and left with Li Zhisheng. Since there were no vehicles near the restricted area at all, we couldn't catch a taxi and had no choice but to walk to the relatively bustling downtown area before finally hailing a cab.
It was already afternoon, and our stomachs, having skipped lunch, began to growl in unison. Sitting in the back seat of the car, Li Zhisheng seemed completely unconcerned about his hunger. Instead, he turned to look out the window and quietly said, "This situation seems to be escalating. Are you really decided to get involved?"
Upon hearing this, Li Zhisheng's words plunged me into deep thought. Although the threat of the mark was imminent, it wasn't necessary to wade into this murky water; perhaps there were better ways to eliminate the mark. However, since the Nine Star Diagram had appeared and the first murder occurred in the apartment I had previously rented, it seemed that this matter was directed at me.
If I were to shrink back now, this situation could spiral out of control, potentially affecting not just one district but the entire city or even a larger area…
The more I thought about it, the more I felt a sense of dread creeping in. Anxiety bubbled up inside me as I couldn’t help but mutter, "But if I get involved like before, will it drag Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng into danger again…?"
Li Zhisheng heard my murmurs and turned his head to look at me. "You don’t need to worry about me. I have no family or ties now; life and death are no longer my concern. Initially, my interest in the supernatural was purely personal; everything I'm doing now is entirely of my own volition. You shouldn’t feel guilty or worry so much."
"Even if I don’t consider you, I have to think about Hu Fang and the Death Apostle. Everyone has feelings; who would want to drag their friends into such dangerous matters? If only I were stronger… If only I didn’t have this damned mark!" I exclaimed, slamming my fist down on the seat with a loud thud.
The driver glanced back at us quickly and snapped, "If you have a bad temper, don’t take it out on my car! If you break something, are you going to pay for it?!"
Hastily, Li Zhisheng apologized, "Sorry! My friend is dealing with some issues and isn’t in a good mood; please forgive us." He then patted my shoulder and whispered in my ear, "See? Even the driver is getting upset. Let’s discuss this later when we get back…"
As he spoke, the car stopped beside the house we had rented in the suburbs. After paying the fare, Li Zhisheng repeatedly apologized to the driver before we finally got out.
Once we climbed upstairs and entered our home, the Death Apostle stood up with concern and asked, "So? Did you find out anything?"
At that moment, Hu Fang had also gotten up. She was sitting next to the Death Apostle watching television. Seeing us, she curiously asked, "Where did you go? What were you investigating?"
Fearing they might sense my inner turmoil, I let Li Zhisheng explain while I headed to the bathroom to wash my face and calm my agitated emotions.
After washing up and stepping out of the bathroom, I ran into Yao Long who had just woken up. Rubbing his eyes as he opened his door, he saw my wet face and assumed I had just been sleeping. "Good morning! You just got up too?" he said.
I smiled and said to him, "Are you still half asleep? I've given you my room; where am I supposed to sleep? I even went out and came back." With that, I stepped aside to let him use the bathroom and added, "You should freshen up a bit; we have something to discuss later."
Yao Long nodded in agreement without asking further and went into the bathroom to wash up.
I returned to the living room and saw Li Zhisheng talking with Hu Fang and Death Apostle about what had happened, so I sat down beside them and added a few comments.
Just as I finished speaking, I noticed Yao Long had finished washing up and was coming out of the bathroom. I called out to him, "Yao Long, come here for a moment; we might need your help with something."
"What is it?" he asked as he took a seat next to me.
I looked him over and asked, "How are your injuries healing, and how's your Void Spirit power coming along?"
Yao Long squeezed his arm and replied, "The injuries haven't fully healed yet, but I can still fight. However, my power is only at less than half..."
