I was startled by the sudden shadow and instinctively took a few steps back. The fleeting shadow flew past me and quickly approached the Yin Qi that was rushing towards me.
With a loud "thud," the shadow landed and drove into the ground, instantly dispersing the Yin Qi that had been attacking me.
Still shaken, I turned to look aside and saw a pitch-black longsword embedded in the ground not far away. The sword was entirely black, emanating an eerie glow, reminiscent of my Jiang Ling that I kept at home.
"Who are you?!" I shouted as I scanned my surroundings. At that moment, I noticed a man dressed in a dark shirt and jeans watching us from a platform on the second floor.
"Who are you?!" I asked again, looking at the man on the distant platform.
He remained silent and leaped down from the second-floor platform with a thud, kicking up a cloud of dust as he landed.
"If I'm not mistaken, you must be Shen Xu," he said, not answering my question but directly stating my name, which took me by surprise.
At this moment, Yao Long and Li Zhisheng had already cleared the surrounding Vengeful Spirits. Seeing someone approach, they both readied themselves for an attack, keeping a wary eye on the man walking towards us.
"Yes, I am Shen Xu, but you still haven't answered my question. Who exactly are you?" I asked impatiently.
"I'm just an ordinary Taoist," the man replied with a smile as he walked past me to the Black Sword embedded in the ground and pulled it out.
As he drew the sword, three more people emerged from somewhere—some old and some young. The oldest looked to be over eighty, while the youngest appeared to be in their twenties or thirties.
Seeing this, Yao Long and Li Zhisheng hurriedly retreated to my side. I whispered to Yao Long, "Are these people what you mentioned...?" Before I could finish my question, an old man in the distance, leaning on a cane, spoke in a low voice, "Sorry about that, Buddy, for causing you trouble. Cough... cough..." He began to cough repeatedly, seemingly unwell.
The young man beside him quickly stepped forward with concern. "Master, are you alright?"
The old man waved his hand gently. "I'm fine, I'm fine. Just choked on some Jujube earlier."
Hearing this made me think, "So this old man has been hiding in the shadows eating dates while watching us..."
Thinking about it, I heard Li Zhisheng quietly say, "That's right, it's these people. Not one more, not one less, just like the four we scouted back then."
After listening, I nodded to indicate I understood and raised my voice to directly ask, "May I ask this elder who you are and why you are here? Also, why did you apologize to me as soon as you arrived?"
Upon hearing this, the old man revealed a kind smile. "Buddy, this matter is quite lengthy. This is not the place for a discussion; let's find somewhere else to tell you everything in detail." With that, his gaze suddenly sharpened, and he lightly shook the cane in his hand. With a clang, a slender black weapon resembling a willow branch shot out from the cane.
Immediately after, the old man flicked his wrist with the slender weapon, causing it to whip through the air like a vine, stirring up dust from the ground.
"What incredible speed!" Yao Long couldn't help but exclaim.
"What happened?" Since I couldn't see the ghostly figures, I could only ask Yao Long.
Yao Long replied in astonishment, "That old man took out more than ten Vengeful Spirits in an instant. Even I couldn't see how he killed them with that weapon."
Among us, Yao Long was probably the most skilled. If he couldn't see it clearly, then this old man was indeed extraordinary.
Thinking about this made me feel a sense of dread, and I secretly rejoiced that he wasn't our enemy. If we had to fight him like that, we wouldn't even know how we died.
"Come on, buddies, follow me," the old man said as he returned the weapon to his cane and turned to walk up the stairs.
Though we were confused, we had no choice but to follow closely behind.
As we ascended, not only did the old man seem unfazed, but even the young men and women beside him helped support him as they walked upstairs.
After climbing an unknown number of floors, we finally stopped. We had reached the top of this still unfinished building. Looking down from the rooftop, I could see a clear view of Huifeng District not far away.
At that moment, the old man turned around and pulled a jujube from his pocket, popping it into his mouth. He spoke slowly, "Young man, do you remember killing a Taoist priest?"
"Daoist?" After hearing this, I searched my memory repeatedly but could not recall when I had killed a Daoist. So I said, "I truly apologize; I really don't remember ever killing a Daoist."
To my surprise, the old man not only did not get angry but instead smiled. "It's understandable that you don't remember, after all, it's been a year..." He spat out a jujube pit from his mouth and continued, "Let me remind you: a year ago, you killed a villain using Soul Threads in Gui Tian Village. Does that jog your memory?"
Upon hearing this, I suddenly understood. It was indeed quite some time ago when the Death Apostle discovered something unusual in Gui Tian Village and asked me to investigate. I found someone using Soul Threads and ultimately killed him.
"I remember now!" I said. "I did kill such a person. So, are you here to take revenge for him?" I asked tentatively, while Yao Long and Li Zhisheng also tensed up defensively.
"Relax, relax, I'm not here to seek revenge," the old man said, noticing my misunderstanding. He slightly raised his hand and waved it. "If I really wanted to take revenge on you, I would have acted long ago. Although the person you killed was one of my disciples, I not only do not want to take revenge but actually want to thank you."
"Thank me? Why?" I asked, somewhat puzzled.
The old man explained calmly, "Although my disciple had a high rank, he had an unwholesome heart. Not long after joining, he was corrupted by evil thoughts and became a traitor to our sect. I originally planned to deal with him myself, but before I could act, news came that he had already been eliminated. So shouldn't we be thanking you..."
