At that moment, the Void Spirit had fully drawn the bowstring, and the dark arrow resembled a dragon poised to strike, continuously radiating Black Light. I sensed that the Void Spirit was completely prepared and seemed to be aiming at a specific point within the White Mist.
Just as the Void Spirit was about to release the bowstring, a desperate cry came from behind me: "Shen Xu! Run! We stand no chance against these things, hurry! Run!" It was Li Zhisheng's voice.
Hearing that shout, I could no longer hold back. A determination surged within me; I had to save him!
With that thought, I quickly concentrated my mental energy, trying to become incredibly focused, directing all of that focus toward reclaiming my body.
"You fool, what are you doing?! If you do this, not only will you fail to save your friend, but we will also be drained of our souls by those spirits!" The Void Spirit sensed my intentions and suddenly roared at me in anger, attempting to prevent me from taking back control. But in that moment of fury, I noticed a slight crack in his control over my body.
"Now's my chance!" I shouted, seizing the moment when the Void Spirit's grip faltered and reclaimed my body.
"Do you really want to die this badly?! With your strength, you can't save your friend; you'll die too!" The Void Spirit screamed wildly within me, but the more he yelled, the less focused he became on regaining control.
Taking advantage of the moment before the arrow was released, I tightened the bowstring again to prevent the arrow infused with the Void Spirit's power from being shot. Then, I steadied myself and abruptly turned around, addressing the Void Spirit: "Maybe I'm not as strong as you! But I will keep getting stronger for my friends and family, while you are just a cold-blooded demon!"
With that, I aimed the arrowhead at the direction from which Li Zhisheng's voice had come and shouted, "Li Zhisheng, hold on!" The dragon-like arrow let out a thunderous roar and shot into the White Mist, trailing Black Light.
As soon as I released the arrow, I felt severe burns on my hand from gripping the bowstring made of the Void Spirit's power. It was as if this burn had penetrated beyond my flesh; even my soul felt scorched.
"It seems I still can't harness your power..." I muttered to myself. I expected the Void Spirit to respond with arrogance, but surprisingly he remained silent upon hearing my words.
Just as I was about to ask what was wrong with him, a tremendous explosion echoed not far ahead. In an instant, a darkness like ink dispersed the surrounding White Mist, and a powerful shockwave surged toward me.
Seeing this, I hurriedly plunged the Azure Spirit into the ground and gripped it tightly with both hands, hoping to stabilize myself.
The fierce wind howled past me, whipping up a large amount of fallen leaves and dry grass from the ground, relentlessly battering my body.
I lost track of time as the shockwave from the explosion gradually subsided. The dense fog that had enveloped the area was blown away by the blast. Even the surrounding trees were uprooted by the force of the explosion, toppling over one after another.
"Now let's see how you handle this," Void Spirit complained within me.
"Handle what? Haven't we taken care of everything?" I replied as I stood up and shook off the thick layer of leaves clinging to me. At that moment, I focused my gaze ahead and noticed a concave clearing not far away, with trees leaning outward in a radial pattern. Li Zhisheng lay in the center of that clearing.
"Hmph," Void Spirit scoffed. "Taken care of? Open your eyes and take a good look around!"
Just as I was about to approach the fallen Li Zhisheng, I quickly glanced around at Void Spirit's words. To my dismay, I saw seven or eight dark green spirits standing nearby. Upon realizing they had been discovered, they erupted into sharp laughter, as if the earlier attack had inflicted no damage on them at all, perhaps even making them stronger.
Although fear crept into my heart at the sight of these spirits, my primary concern was still Li Zhisheng's condition. "Li Zhisheng! Are you still alive?!" I shouted and dashed toward his direction.
Before I could take more than a couple of steps, the dark green spirits vanished from my side and suddenly appeared in front of me, as if they had teleported.
"How's it going? Still want to act tough? If you hadn't taken over my body earlier, I would have wiped them out already. Now look where we are—first half your power is absorbed, then you waste some attacking for nothing. You wanted to grow stronger for your friends? Show me how strong you've become now," Void Spirit mocked.
Faced with Void Spirit's taunts, I knew deep down that the situation was indeed dire. With the remaining power within me, not only could I not win; even if Void Spirit took over for me, victory was uncertain.
At that moment, looking at Li Zhisheng lying motionless on the ground, I felt a wave of despair wash over me. My arm that had been raised with Azure Spirit fell limply to my side. "Maybe you're right; maybe I'm truly overestimating myself. I can't become strong this quickly..."
Faced with my frustration, the few dark green spirits in front of me laughed even more eerily. Their laughter felt like mockery, constantly stabbing at my already crumbling heart.
"Hah, I thought you had some tricks up your sleeve, but it turns out you can only talk big. Since that's the case, why don't you just give your body to me? You can turn into a wandering ghost instead. After all, to you, this body is just a shell, while I can do much more valuable things with it. Get lost, useless!"
The taunts from the Void Spirit and the mocking laughter echoed in my ears like a giant hammer relentlessly striking my fragile psyche.
"Fine, fine... I'll do as you wish and give this body to you..." I said weakly, slowly lowering my head as I allowed the Void Spirit to gradually take over my body.
At that moment, Li Zhisheng, who was lying on the ground in the distance, suddenly turned his head. His eyes were filled with rage as he fixed his gaze on me, using all his strength to shout, "Shen Xu! After knowing you for so long, I never knew you were this kind of person! Is this little setback enough to break you?! Listen to me, I'm not dead yet. If you give up and turn into a ghost now, I will make sure to shatter your soul and then perish together with these green spirits! Even if I die, I refuse to die a coward's death!"
Li Zhisheng said as he struggled to rise from the ground. Blood covered his face as he stood trembling in the center of the hollow space, his eyes revealing an unwavering determination...
