"Going back? What do you want to do!" Void Spirit turned to look back, only to see a large group of blood-red corpses continuously pouring out from the tunnel. There were at least a few hundred, if not a thousand, and among them, two massive creatures had already broken through the tunnel and squeezed their way out.
I knew that if we wanted to go back, we would have to cut down the corpses blocking our path. However, doing so would only lead to more creatures appearing, putting us in an even more dangerous situation. But at this moment, there was no other choice; simply fleeing would not solve the problem.
"Trust me, let's get back to the vehicle!" I said firmly to Void Spirit.
At that moment, Void Spirit sensed my thoughts and replied, "I hope you're right..." Without hesitation, Void Spirit turned around, cradling the trembling dog in his left arm while raising Jiang Ling in his right hand, charging bravely into the horde of corpses.
I couldn't help but notice that the Void Spirit, who had always looked down on me with disdain, was now starting to trust me. Even the things I wanted to protect were being safeguarded by him in his own way. Though he didn't say it aloud, I understood that this bond might have been forged through our shared hardships.
As I contemplated this, Void Spirit had already plunged into the mass of corpses. He gripped Jiang Ling tightly with one hand and aimed at the approaching corpses before delivering a powerful strike.
With a howling wind, a black-and-white Slash Mark materialized, slicing through any corpse that came into contact with it in an instant, creating a path before us.
Void Spirit did not linger; seizing the opportunity while the slain corpses had yet to summon more creatures, he dashed forward.
Reaching the vehicle, we found that the blood-red corpses had not yet caught up. Void Spirit asked, "I've returned as you requested. What's next? Where's the item?"
"Leave the rest to me; you've worked hard..." With that, I focused my mind and regained control of my body. In that instant, the power of Jiang Ling within me suddenly spiraled out of control, an overwhelming pressure coursing through my entire being as if every vein in my body was about to burst.
"Can you... hold on?" Void Spirit asked.
"I can't hold on... but I have to," I gritted my teeth and leaned into the vehicle to retrieve my belongings. From within my pack, I pulled out the Sheepskin Book that I had packed before our departure and stuffed it into my jacket pocket.
Just then, a deafening roar echoed behind us, and the ground beneath us began to tremble rhythmically as if hundreds of elephants were charging toward me.
"They're coming back! We need to leave now!" Void Spirit shouted.
Hearing this, I turned around and saw dozens of creatures pushing toward us. Their massive forms had completely blocked off the tunnel; many blood-red corpses were crushed into pulp beneath their large feet.
Seeing that escape from this direction was impossible, I had no choice but to turn around and run out through another exit of the tunnel.
As I stumbled along the way, I nearly fell several times under the overwhelming burden of Jiang Ling's power within me. Even the Yellow Dog in my arms seemed to sense my immense pain, constantly licking my hand with its wet tongue and whimpering softly.
"Void Spirit, how did you manage to suppress Jiang Ling's power just now..." I asked as I staggered forward.
"I didn't suppress it; it submitted to me..." Void Spirit replied.
"Submitted?! Why do I feel like Jiang Ling's power wants to kill me right now?! How can I make it submit?"
"Let me take over..." Void Spirit said in a somewhat deep voice.
At that moment, since I couldn't quicken my pace and could see the blood-red corpses closing in behind me, I had no choice but to surrender my body to Void Spirit once again.
As soon as Void Spirit occupied my body, the feeling of my veins about to burst suddenly vanished, replaced by a lightness that made me feel as if I were soaring. However, the mark on my arm continued to grow rapidly, reminding me that time was running out...
Just then, a thunderous roar echoed from behind, and a powerful gust of wind carrying a foul scent surged toward me.
Void Spirit instinctively set down the Yellow Dog and gently pushed it behind him.
Turning back, I saw that the tunnel behind us had collapsed with a deafening crash, sending up a massive Blood Mist that surged toward me like a crimson wave.
Amidst the Red Blood mist, a gigantic figure emerged, towering several stories high. Its booming voice resonated like Kua Fu standing defiantly within the Blood Mist.
"It seems things are not looking good..." Void Spirit remarked, gripping Jiang Ling tightly and positioning the sword in front of him, ready for battle at any moment.
"It looks like we can't escape. Shen Xu, your plan seems to need to be postponed." As Void Spirit finished speaking, a thunderous roar erupted from within the Blood Mist, instantly dispersing the thick mist and revealing a monstrous creature made of flesh and limbs.
The creature was robustly built, with broad shoulders and thick back. Four arms resembling gigantic vines hung down at its sides, while its enormous head bore only a mouth full of bones that covered its entire face.
Seeing its massive mouth reminded me—wasn't this the giant maw disguised as the Underworld Gate? So it was actually a monster!
Recalling the perilous moments just before, chills ran down my spine. Yet this enormous creature made me tremble even more.
"Are you planning to confront it?" I cautiously asked Void Spirit.
"I don't want to confront it... but do you think we can escape?!" Void Spirit replied, gripping the hilt of the sword tightly and raising it above his head.
At that moment, I could feel a powerful force gathering on the blade. As the energy concentrated, dark lightning crackled along the edge of the sword.
The Yellow Dog behind us, witnessing this scene, fell silent, tucking its tail between its legs and trembling in fear behind me.
"Regardless of whether this strike can hurt it, it's good to give it a warning!" With that, Void Spirit shouted and swung Jiang Ling down fiercely.
A shadow of the sword flashed by, and a massive Slash Mark, black and white with surging lightning, raced straight toward the monster.
I thought to myself that this strike was several times more powerful than anything I had ever unleashed. If this were used in the real world, an entire city—and perhaps even the surrounding area for miles—would be reduced to rubble...
