"This is just right..." The Sun Warrior Leader lowered his hand.
"Indeed, the book is in the restaurant, but if I bring it to you, will you really let us go?!" I said cautiously.
"Of course..." The Sun Warrior Leader replied, sitting back down in his seat. He picked up the teacup on the table and took a sip, saying, "Although I don't consider myself a person who keeps promises, keeping you around doesn't benefit me at all. As long as you obediently hand over the book, I will naturally let you go."
After hearing this, I glanced at Hu Fang, signaling her to keep an eye on Yao Long while I went to get the book. Hu Fang understood and helped Yao Long sit up on the bed. Then, I turned around and prepared to leave.
Just as I reached the door, I heard the Sun Warrior Leader hum lightly, instructing the burly man who had been following me to accompany me to retrieve the book.
Once outside the inn, the burly man stayed close behind me, not leaving my side for a moment. At this point, any tricks I might try were impossible. First, I couldn't summon the Void Spirit again; second, physically, I probably wasn't a match for him.
We walked in silence until I quickly arrived at the restaurant. After retrieving the book from the owner, I discreetly left some money as a token of gratitude. Then, I left the restaurant and retraced my steps back to the inn.
During this time, although I felt somewhat confident in my deduction, there was still an underlying worry that this counterfeit copy of Divine Anomalies Classic wouldn't be discovered.
With these thoughts in mind, I arrived at the door of the Sun Warrior Leader's room. The door opened, and he glanced at me, saying, "You're back so soon? Nothing went wrong on the way, did it?"
This question seemed directed at me but was actually aimed at the burly man beside him; he wanted to see if I had pulled any tricks.
The burly man bowed and replied, "No, everything was fine on the way. There were no unusual occurrences; you can rest assured."
"Good. Hand it over so I can take a look..." The Sun Warrior Leader extended his hand toward me.
I remained silent and stepped forward cautiously, carefully handing over the black leather bag containing the fake Divine Anomalies Classic.
The Sun Warrior Leader took the bag and looked me over briefly before slowly opening it and pulling out the counterfeit Divine Anomalies Classic.
At that moment, my heart was in my throat. Whether or not I could deceive them depended on this instant. If he immediately discovered that this book was fake, then not only Yao Long and Death Apostle would be in danger; even Hu Fang would likely not escape unscathed. The real Divine Anomalies Classic had long since left this city...
I watched as the Sun Warrior Leader flipped through the book in his hands—one whose name I didn't even know. The atmosphere in the room grew tense; it became eerily silent around us. My palms were already sweating with anxiety.
"Is this really Divine Anomalies Classic: Nine Star Life and Death Diagram?" The Sun Warrior Leader asked without looking up, his brow gradually furrowing.
Upon hearing this, my heart tightened with fear that he might notice something unusual. I quickly affirmed, "Yes, the book I have in my hand, 'Divine Anomalies Classic,' is indeed this one."
"Hmm..." He pondered for a moment before saying, "You may leave now."
Hearing this, I felt as if a heavy weight had been lifted off my shoulders, yet I was somewhat surprised by his sudden willingness to let us go. Not wanting to linger and risk him changing his mind, I hurriedly pulled Death Apostle up from the chair and gestured for Hu Fang to take Yao Long. We turned and quickly exited the room.
Once outside, Hu Fang exclaimed in surprise, "Isn't that book you gave him...?"
"Shh!" I was worried about being followed and urged Hu Fang to keep quiet as we hurried back to the hotel where I was staying.
Once inside the room, we laid Yao Long on the bed and let Death Apostle sit in a chair to rest.
At that moment, I whispered to Hu Fang, "You're right; it was fake. That's why I wanted to leave so quickly. Hurry, call Li Zhisheng and see how things are on his end. We need him back here fast; we must leave this place immediately!"
Seeing my anxious expression, Hu Fang wasted no time and took out her phone to call Li Zhisheng.
A moment later, she told me, "Li Zhisheng is on his way back now. He should reach the station in about ten minutes."
"Great! Then let's get ready and leave!" With that, I went to the bathroom to splash some water on my face and forcibly woke up the unconscious Yao Long.
As he regained consciousness, Yao Long rubbed his forehead and groggily asked, "Where am I?"
"You’re safe now..." I replied. "You need to wake up quickly; we're leaving soon."
With that, I headed downstairs to check out. However, when I returned to the room, I found Yao Long staring in astonishment at Death Apostle, who was sitting calmly in the chair, displaying an unusual wariness.
"Yao Long, what's wrong?" I approached him.
"Yao Long said, "Who is this person?!"
I was taken aback by his reaction and looked over at Death Apostle. "That's Death Apostle. What... you don't even recognize him? Did you get hit so hard that you lost your memory?"
"No, that's not what I mean. I know he is Mr. Death, but there’s no soul of his inside this Mr. Death! Instead, there's a strange soul residing within him!"
“What?!” I exclaimed in shock.
“Yes, that’s right! I remember now! Before I was knocked out, they seemed to be about to do something to Mr. Death. I wanted to stop them, but I was knocked unconscious! There’s no mistake; this person in front of us is definitely not Mr. Death!” Yao Long asserted confidently.
Having been in a tense state earlier, even when I noticed the oddity of the Death Apostle, I didn’t pay much attention to it. I just wanted to rescue the person and leave this place as soon as possible. Now, I finally understood what the strange feeling I had back then was!
“Why did that bastard Yang Master agree so readily to let us go? It turns out this matter isn’t that simple!” I said angrily.
“So, this Death Apostle in front of us is fake?!” Hu Fang asked. “What should we do now? Should we go back and find them?!”
I gritted my teeth, furrowed my brows, and thought for a moment before saying, “No, we can’t go back to find them now. Yang Master must have done this as a precaution against me pulling a trick. If we go back now, it would be like walking into a trap, and they’re probably waiting for us to return. Right now, all we can do is find Li Zhisheng first and then come up with a plan!”
With that, Yao Long and I picked up the Death Apostle and left the hotel. Afterward, we took a cab straight to the station. Since we had wasted some time earlier, Li Zhisheng had likely already arrived at the station…
