Holding my phone, I looked at the unread text messages on the screen, a sense of foreboding creeping into my heart.
I opened the messages—eighteen in total, all notifications of missed calls received while my phone was off, and the number displayed was my mother's.
A wave of anxiety washed over me, and I quickly opened my contact list to call her back.
With a nervous heart, I placed the phone to my ear. The sound of the call connecting felt like heavy hammers striking against my already unsettled spirit.
After a long time, until the call automatically disconnected, no one answered. "It's fine; they must be busy or forgot their phones..." I kept reassuring myself and called my mother several more times, but the result was the same—no one picked up.
Then I thought for a moment and called my father a few times, wanting to know what was going on with all those calls. But again, no one answered.
At this moment, looking at my phone, my heart sank. "Even if they're busy, there's no way both of them would not answer at the same time. What if something happened to them? No, don't think like that; maybe they'll call me back once they're done. They must be fine."
Trying to calm myself down, I put away my phone and decided to go downstairs to meet Hu Fang and the others. If I waited too long, they would definitely start worrying. So I grabbed my daily essentials and left the rented room, planning to figure out how to explain things to the landlord later.
A moment later, I arrived downstairs. Meng Zhuang and Hu Fang were sitting in a car not far away, peering outside. When they saw me coming with a large bag in hand, Meng Zhuang hurriedly got out of the car to take it from me. "Shen, why did you take so long? I thought something happened to you."
I forced a distracted smile and replied, "I just went to grab some things; what could happen? Let's go." Together with Meng Zhuang, we put the luggage in the trunk and then got back into the car, heading towards Yunpo Mountain.
On the way, I stared out the window with a serious expression, silent as thoughts of whether my parents were safe filled my mind.
"Shen Xu, what's wrong? You seem off since you came back with your things. Did something happen?" Hu Fang leaned closer from the back seat, concern etched on her face.
"It's nothing; just some stuff got stolen at home. Luckily I brought all the important things with me this time; otherwise, it would have been a big loss," I responded dismissively.
"You’re here again. Do you remember what you promised me? No more hiding things from me. Look into my eyes, have you lied to me again?" Hu Fang said, pulling me closer.
Facing Hu Fang, looking into her clear eyes, I felt my heart race a little. Since we were so close, her warm breath gently brushed against my face, making my own breathing quicken.
"It's nothing, really. I just called home, but my parents didn’t answer. I’m a bit worried, but it should be fine," I said hurriedly, avoiding Hu Fang's gaze and turning my head to the side.
"Neither of them answered? How long has it been since you last went home? Shouldn’t you take some time to visit?" Hu Fang asked with concern.
At that moment, Meng Zhuang, sitting in front of us, chimed in, "Yeah, Shen. I heard from Manager Wu that you rarely go home when you're at the company. Why not visit recently?"
"I want to..." I forced a bitter smile. Given the current situation, going home might put my parents at risk. Plus, with all the unexpected events happening lately, even if I wanted to go back, I should at least handle these matters first...
"Go home and take a look. I remember hearing you on the phone with your father urging you to come back. It’s been about a year since that call; you should check in. We’re here too; if things get overwhelming, we’ll reach out to you," Li Zhisheng also turned around from his seat in front and spoke up. I could clearly sense a hint of envy in his eyes.
"Yeah, I'll consider it. You all don’t need to worry; right now, we need to settle down at Yunpo Mountain first..." After that, we chatted about trivial matters until we arrived near Yunpo Mountain.
By this time, it was completely dark. The path leading to Yunpo Mountain was already overgrown with weeds, and now that it was dark, it became even harder to navigate. We each carried some luggage while Meng Zhuang helped support Death Apostle as we cautiously made our way toward the foot of the mountain...
As we approached, I noticed the dark door that led out of the mountain was tightly shut. I raised my voice and called out, "Mo Shu Old Senior! Mo Shu Old Senior!"
After calling a few times, there was a loud rumble as the dark door slowly opened. The person who opened the door was Mo Yu. Seeing us, he quickly stepped aside to let us in and said, "Oh, it's you! Come in quickly! The master was just here; he probably expected you would come back soon. I didn’t expect you’d arrive right after he left—what a coincidence!"
I smiled and replied, "Mo Shu Old Senior really has a knack for predicting things; how did you guess this?" With that, our group entered through the dark door and followed the narrow staircase upward.
On the way up, Mo Yu told us, "When you left last time, this place was haunted. But now it's fine; you can stay without worry. The master has caught a few spirits to guard the mountain. However... please don’t kill them all this time!"
Mo Yu smiled and patted my shoulder, seemingly welcoming our arrival.
As we spoke, we made our way to the hall, where candles had already been lit. Mo Shu Old Senior stood at the entrance of the tunnel, leaning on his cane to greet us.
"Master, you were right; they have indeed come," Mo Yu said to Mo Shu.
"Yes, thank you for your hard work. You should go rest now," Mo Shu replied, gently patting Mo Yu on the back. Understanding the cue, Mo Yu nodded and left on his own.
I stood by and quickly cupped my hands in greeting, saying, "Mo Shu Senior!" Li Zhisheng and Hu Fang followed my lead and greeted him as well.
"No need for such formalities; I had a feeling you would come. First, put down what you have. I'll help you sort out the room you stayed in last time. You can leave your luggage there," Mo Shu said as he turned to lead us inside.
I didn't follow immediately but called out to him, "Mo Shu Old Senior, since you knew we were coming, you must have received some news. Why don't you share it with us first..."
