"Consider defeat before victory. This is a good thing, but one can only know through experience. Since we currently have only this one method, and it is not entirely unfeasible, it is worth a try," Li Zhisheng replied.
I sensed that Death Apostle wore a distinct expression of anxiety and unease on his face. I wondered if it was because he had spent time in Yang Master, leading to a deep-seated fear of its leader, or perhaps it was worry stemming from concerns about Yao Long.
Regardless of the reason, the expression on his face was evident, completely unlike the clever Death Apostle I had known, who often helped me devise plans.
"I know you're feeling uneasy..." I said, suppressing my own emotions as I walked slowly to Death Apostle's side. "The leader of Yang Master is indeed powerful, but as Li Zhisheng mentioned, perhaps we are not at the point of true despair yet... It's my fault for letting my negative emotions affect you all. I will find a way to pull myself together; trust me."
With that, I patted Death Apostle on the shoulder, hoping to offer him some comfort.
"Shen Xu, you've already tried your best. I'm not blind; I can see it. Whether it was when you risked your life to save me or when you threw yourself into danger for everyone else, I've noticed all of it... You've worked hard for me," Death Apostle said meaningfully, exhaling deeply. "You've done so much for me; it's time for me to do something for you."
His last words were spoken softly, and even I, standing closest to him, could barely hear them. Yet, I understood the implication behind his words; however, Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng behind us likely did not catch it.
"Death Apostle! Are you thinking of doing something foolish?! Don't be impulsive; there will always be a way!" I urged anxiously as I grabbed his arm.
He smiled and brushed my hand away. "It's nothing; I was just saying that offhand. You're overthinking it."
Just as Death Apostle finished speaking, we heard Mo Lin's voice from the doorway. He stood there and said, "I heard from Mo Yu that you all were here, so I came to take a look..."
"Yes, we're here seeking protection from Mo Shu Senior," I replied as I turned back.
Mo Lin smiled. "Not at all! You've helped us before and even sent so many Jujubes over. I'm actually happy to see you here; I'm sure Master would welcome your arrival too..." Suddenly recalling something, he changed the subject. "By the way, I came to let you know that we will be extinguishing the candles soon, so you should rest up."
"Okay, got it. Thank you," I said in gratitude to Mo Lin.
Afterward, Mo Lin turned and left. Knowing that time was getting late and that Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng had been busy with me for quite a while without proper rest, I suggested they each take some time to rest and that we could discuss matters later.
Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng nodded in agreement and dragged their weary bodies onto the stone beds. As for Death Apostle, he had already been asleep for quite some time but now felt restless and wanted to sit outside alone for a while while urging me to rest first.
After that, aside from Death Apostle sitting alone in the hall outside lost in thought, everyone else lay down on their beds.
For a long time, I tossed and turned in bed, unable to fall asleep. Finally, I decided to get up and go outside, planning to have a chat with the Death Apostle. By this time, the candles in the room and the hall had long been extinguished. In the darkness, I tentatively called out, "Death Apostle? Are you there?"
After a moment, I heard the Death Apostle's voice from not far away: "Yes, I'm here." Hearing this, I walked slowly toward the direction of the voice.
When I got closer, I felt around for a stone bench and sat down. "In this pitch blackness, what are you thinking about sitting here alone?" I asked.
"Nothing much, just couldn't sleep and thought I'd sit for a while. Can't sleep either?" the Death Apostle replied.
"Yeah, I've got some things on my mind..." I answered.
"Why not share? After all, we're just sitting here doing nothing," the Death Apostle suggested.
I pondered for a moment and said, "Two things. One is what we discussed earlier about Yang Master and the Divine Anomalies Classic. The other is about my parents; I've been trying to call them all day but no one is picking up. I wonder if something has happened." With that, I reached into my pocket for my phone to see if they had returned my call.
But as soon as my hand touched the phone, I remembered that there was no signal at Yunpo Mountain, and it seemed that no electronic devices worked inside this "castle."
"Nowadays everyone has their phones glued to them. Could it be that their phone is lost?" the Death Apostle asked.
"That shouldn't be the case; even if one of them lost theirs, both shouldn't lose their phones at the same time..." As I spoke, I stood up with my phone in hand. "There's no signal here. I'm going to head down the mountain to check it out. You stay here; I'll be back soon."
"Since there's nothing else to do, I might as well accompany you," the Death Apostle replied.
With that, we relied on our memories to find the staircase leading down the mountain and carefully made our way to the dark door.
As I opened the door, bright moonlight streamed in from outside, and countless stars twinkled in the sky—a truly refreshing sight. Normally, I would have stopped to admire it, but at that moment, I had no heart for such beauty.
"Death Apostle, could you help me hold down the switch from inside so that the dark stone door doesn't close and lock us out?"
The Death Apostle nodded and held down the switch inside while I stepped out into the moonlight. Looking at my phone again now revealed that it was functioning properly; the screen displayed the time and showed that there was a signal.
After waiting for a moment without receiving any missed call or text message alerts, it became clear that my Ming Parents hadn't returned my call at all.
I was filled with mixed emotions. Even though it was already midnight, I still dialed my parents' number.
One... two... three... I had lost count of how many calls I had made until the voice on the other end finally said, "The number you have dialed is not available..." Only then did I stop.
"What on earth is going on? Their phones are off and they won't answer. What has happened..." I muttered to myself.
Behind me, Death Apostle heard my words and asked with concern, "No one answered?"
"Yeah." I replied absentmindedly.
"If you're worried, why not go home and check? We have the protection of the Path of Slaughter here, so we should be safe. As for Yang Master and Divine Anomalies Classic, let Li Zhisheng and me handle that... Think about it; in the year and more that I've known you, you've never gone home once. The last time you spoke to your family was ages ago. Just go back and see them..."
After hearing this, even though I still couldn't fully trust Death Apostle and the others, I realized I could no longer delay. While Yang Master's threat loomed large, my family needed protection just as much as my friends did.
