With this thought in mind, I made up my mind to go home and take a look; otherwise, I wouldn't be able to rest easy. So, I turned around and returned to the hidden door.
As I brushed past the Death Apostle, he asked, "Have you made up your mind? Planning to go home for a bit?"
I had no words, only silently nodded my head before making my way up the stairs step by step. The Death Apostle followed closely behind me, and the stone door closed with a loud thud as he let go.
We returned to the hall without saying much. The Death Apostle remained alone in the hall while I quietly went back to my room to rest.
A night passed in silence. The next morning, a dull bell sound jolted me awake from my dreams. I slowly sat up, noticing that the candles on the walls had been lit at some point.
"Hu Fang, Li Zhisheng..." I rubbed my tired eyes and instinctively whispered their names.
After a moment of no response, I looked over and saw them both lying in bed, snoring peacefully. It seemed they were too exhausted to recover quickly.
"Forget it, let them sleep," I muttered to myself as I got out of bed and walked out of the room. Just as I stepped outside, I heard the Death Apostle's voice nearby: "Up so early? Don't you want to sleep a bit more?"
Hearing his voice, I looked up and saw him still sitting in the hall. "Did you not sleep at all last night?" I asked.
"Yeah, just a bit troubled..." he sighed in response.
I approached him and placed my hand on his shoulder. "Don't think too much about it; there's nothing you can't get through. Look at me—I just had a good sleep and feel much better. Why don't you take a nap too..."
"You’re not better at all; you're clearly still suppressing yourself. Do you really think I can't see through it like Hu Fang?" The Death Apostle raised his head and gently patted my hand resting on his shoulder. "Alright, I know you have things to do. You should go ahead; I'll inform Hu Fang and Li Zhisheng for you. As for Yao Long and the Divine Anomalies Classic, leave that to me and Li Zhisheng. If anything comes up, we'll contact you."
Seeing that the Death Apostle had seen through me, I no longer hid it and let out a meaningful sigh. "I can't keep anything from you, can I? Since you've guessed it already, I'll take my leave now. Please let them know when they wake up."
"Sure, take care on your way."
"I will," I replied and slowly walked toward the staircase down the mountain. It seemed that since it was still early, no one from the Slayers had appeared yet. I had intended to say goodbye to Mo Shu and test him again, but since he wasn't around, I decided to wait until my return to ask him then.
After that, I left Yunpo Mountain alone and called Meng Zhuang to book a flight back home. I also asked him to come pick me up.
On the way, Meng Zhuang was still his usual polite self. He didn’t seem upset that I had called him so early; instead, he joked with me, "Shen, could you bring me some local specialties from your hometown?" He even looked a bit embarrassed after saying that.
"Sure, but why did you suddenly think of local specialties? There's nothing particularly special from my hometown," I replied.
"Well, it's just that I recently started dating someone. After I went back yesterday, she asked me to visit her family soon. I thought it wouldn’t be appropriate to go empty-handed, but I didn’t know what to bring. So, since you’re going home, I took the liberty of asking for your help," Meng Zhuang said while scratching the back of his head, sounding a bit sheepish.
Seeing Meng Zhuang's earnest expression made me genuinely happy for him. "That's great! Why didn't you tell me earlier? No problem, I'll definitely help you bring something..."
We then chatted more about Meng Zhuang's girlfriend. I was surprised to learn that he had found a girlfriend before I did.
Before long, we arrived at the airport. After bidding farewell to Meng Zhuang, I boarded my flight home. During the flight, chatting with Meng Zhuang eased some of my anxiety, but the closer we got to home, the stronger an ominous feeling crept into my heart...
A few hours later, the plane landed. As soon as I got off, I hurriedly took a taxi home.
Sitting in the cab, I glanced at my phone; it was already noon. Since I hadn’t eaten much in the past two days, my stomach was growling with hunger. However, I couldn’t care less about that and just wanted to get home as quickly as possible.
Before long, the car stopped at the entrance of the neighborhood where I had bought a house for my parents. It was a garden-style community with green trees and fountains—a pleasant place to live—but at that moment, I had no heart to appreciate it.
After paying the fare, I quickly got out of the car and rushed toward my home without a second thought.
Along the way, my anxiety intensified. I kept reassuring myself, "It must be that there was a theft at home; maybe my parents' phones were stolen or something was lost. Everything will be fine; when I knock on the door, they will greet me with their warm smiles just like before..."
Lost in thought, I realized that I had run up eight flights of stairs and arrived at my front door.
Standing there, looking at the slightly ajar door in front of me, my earlier fantasies were shattered in an instant. "Dad! Mom! I'm back! Are you there?!" I shouted breathlessly as I hurriedly pushed open the door and rushed inside.
Standing inside the house, I was completely stunned. The scene before me was a wreck; the wooden tea table had been split in half, and many pieces of furniture were smashed to bits. Even the chandelier on the ceiling was exposed, swaying back and forth as it dangled from the wires.
What shocked me even more was that amidst the pile of broken furniture in the living room, there was a pool of blood.
"How could this happen? How could this happen..." My mind went blank as I stood there, frozen, unsure of how to react.
"Could it be a burglary? But there should be a body... Wait! The body..." I exclaimed and hurriedly began searching through each room.
After a long while, I returned to the living room without finding my parents' bodies. This gave me a glimmer of hope. I tried to calm myself down and muttered to myself, "The absence of a body means they might still be alive, just injured or perhaps kidnapped. But who would leave the house in this state and then take them away?"
"Robbers? No, that’s impossible. If it were a burglary combined with extortion and kidnapping, they wouldn’t have needed to destroy everything like this. Besides, I haven’t received any ransom calls..."
"Who could it possibly be..." I furrowed my brow tightly, anxiously pacing back and forth in the chaotic room...
