Instinctively, I tightened my grip on Jiang Ling and stepped back a few paces.
To my surprise, I bumped into Yao Long, who was standing behind me. He steadied me and asked softly, "What's going on? Have you seen something in that room?"
Since Yao Long had never encountered Xinzhu before, it was understandable that he didn't know. I replied, "What we’re looking at is likely the true form of Xinzhu that we faced earlier..."
Just then, the door in front of us was suddenly pushed open with a loud bang by Sun Warrior Leader. Inside was an empty square room with a towering pillar standing in the center. The pillar was completely black, adorned with an exquisite golden dragon pattern that coiled around its surface. At the top of the pillar, a blood-red sphere emitted a dazzling light.
I focused my gaze and realized that this sphere was the same object that Sun Warrior Leader had extracted from the Flesh Monster during our previous encounter with Onizuka.
But before I could react, the moment the sphere saw us, it began to expand rapidly, quickly filling the entire empty room and generating a powerful suction force that started pulling us toward it.
In an instant, I heard Sun Warrior Leader shout, "Focus!"
With his shout, he unleashed the power of the Void Spirit within him. A surge of Black Lightning enveloped him, clashing against the ever-expanding red sphere and preventing us from being drawn in.
"This Onizuka wasn’t created by your Void Spirit? Why isn’t it listening to you?" I shouted anxiously at Sun Warrior Leader.
At that moment, Sun Warrior Leader did not show any signs of panic; instead, he calmly replied, "That's right. Onizuka was created with the help of my Void Spirit. However, now that its power has been drained, its thirst for strength has caused it to lose its ability to discern. It has transformed into a monster that continuously absorbs soul energy..."
As he spoke, a white fissure began to form at the point where Sun Warrior Leader's power collided with Onizuka's. As the fissure widened, Sun Warrior Leader seemed to grow tense. He opened his mouth as if to say something but held back his words. Under the blood-red glow, his furrowed brow looked ominous and eerie...
"Not good!" Suddenly, Sun Warrior Leader shouted again. With his cry, the white fissure at the collision point between the red and black forces suddenly expanded, instantly pulling everyone around us—including Onizuka—into it...
I lost track of time, and when I finally regained my senses, I found myself in a desolate wasteland. The pale and parched ground was littered with corpses, and deep cracks marred the earth's surface.
"What happened..." I muttered to myself as I slowly stood up.
As soon as I got up, I noticed the Sun Warrior Leader standing beside me, his face dark and his brows furrowed as he looked up at the sky. "I never expected something like this to happen..."
Hearing his voice, I also looked up and saw swirling red clouds in the sky, continuously rotating, while numerous Vengeful Spirits and Evil Ghosts surged into them like a swarm.
"Is this... the Underworld?!" I exclaimed in shock.
"You're not wrong. We are indeed in the Underworld," the Sun Warrior Leader replied. "I think it might be due to the clash of powers between me and Onizuka just now, which caused a rift in the real world, pulling us all directly into the Underworld. If we don't leave here quickly, I'm afraid..."
He trailed off, leaving his words hanging in the air.
Ignoring his unfinished thought, I turned to look for Yao Long. As soon as I turned my head, I saw Yao Long had already stood up. Like the Sun Warrior Leader, he was staring at the massive swirling clouds above and asked, "Afraid of what?"
"Afraid that we will all perish here..." the Sun Warrior Leader said, slowly lowering his head to glance around before gesturing for us to look in the direction he indicated.
Following his finger, I saw that those who had been following the Sun Warrior Leader were now lying on the ground, reduced to pools of pus and blood, their bones exposed.
"How could this happen!" I said warily, gripping Jiang Ling tightly in front of me as I scanned the surroundings to see what had attacked those followers.
"They weren't attacked..." the Sun Warrior Leader explained. "They became like this because we didn't enter the Underworld in a spiritual state; we came here with our physical bodies. If it weren't for the powerful Void Spirit energy within us, we would have ended up like them—our bodies corroded by the Underworld's potent Yin Qi and turned into pools of pus and blood long ago. But even so, we can't hold out for too long because the Void Spirit's power may be exhausted..."
After listening to him, I pondered for a moment before a sudden realization struck me. "Right! The Guiding Wood! Can't we use the Guiding Wood to get out? Besides, since we're in the Underworld now, as long as we keep absorbing Vengeful Spirits and Evil Ghosts, the Void Spirit's power would be virtually endless..."
Before I could finish my thought, I sensed something was wrong. While absorbing spirits could temporarily restore Void Spirit energy, it would only be a temporary fix. It could place an immense burden on our bodies. If I absorbed too many spirits and caused the mark on my hand to grow uncontrollably, it would lead to consequences beyond my ability to bear.
"You thought of that too, didn't you?" The Sun Warrior Leader looked at me and said, "Let's not even consider whether we have Guiding Wood or not; even if we do have it, it would be useless for us right now and could even harm us. The purpose of Guiding Wood is to guide souls. Once our souls are drawn out by it, our bodies will be instantly occupied by the Void Spirit. At that point, we would truly become Wandering Spirits and Wild Ghosts."
"Moreover, you must be aware of the side effects that come with absorbing souls. It's not just you; even I am affected..."
As he spoke, the Sun Warrior Leader rolled up his sleeves, revealing a mark on his arm that looked exactly like mine.
Seeing this, I wasn't particularly surprised; after all, he had also come into contact with the Box. However, I was curious about how he maintained the mark without the Sheepskin Book...
Just as I was pondering this, the Sun Warrior Leader slowly lowered his sleeves and continued, "Now, it seems that only your friends can use soul absorption to restore the power of the Void Spirit."
Yao Long appeared hesitant upon hearing this from the Sun Warrior Leader. "But... I have never absorbed a soul. I don't know how..."
Hearing this made me sigh inwardly. "Well, it looks like we are all doomed to end up in the Underworld. No matter how strong we are now, what does it matter..."
As I lamented, the ground beneath us suddenly trembled, accompanied by a series of deep rumbling sounds...
