I looked at the wound on my hand, which had begun to heal gradually. It seemed that the Void Spirit had absorbed enough power and was helping me recover my body.
Meanwhile, Yao Long, who had been standing beside me, suddenly dropped to one knee, bowing his head and gasping for breath.
Seeing this, I hurriedly asked, "Yao Long, what's wrong?!"
Just as I spoke, he spat out a mouthful of fresh blood, the bright red liquid splattering onto the pale ground in front of him.
"I'm just a bit shaken from that last blow by the Sun Warrior Leader. It's nothing serious; I'll be fine in a moment," he said, extending his hand as if to stop me from approaching him.
"How can you say it's nothing? You..." I stood up and moved closer to check on him. However, just as my hand touched him, Yao Long suddenly lifted his head sharply.
In that moment, I was so startled that I stumbled back a few steps. Half of his face had transformed, covered in insect-like exoskeletons, and something resembling insect antennae protruded from his mouth. One of his eyes had even developed compound vision, making him almost unrecognizable as a human.
"Yao Long! You..." I exclaimed in horror.
"Don't worry about me; just get away!" He pushed me down to the ground with a hand that was starting to sprout scales.
As I sat there in shock, a loud boom echoed from the distance. I quickly turned to see what was happening and found that the sky had been shrouded by a vast expanse of blood-red clouds. Thunder rumbled within them, and the massive red sphere had vanished without a trace.
Only the enormous figure of the King of Hell remained standing on the ground, while the Sun Warrior Leader was now on the surface.
After that full-force strike from the Sun Warrior Leader, one of the King of Hell's arms had been completely shattered, its broken pieces scattered at its feet. The other arm remained intact but was severely damaged.
"You used Fiery Annihilation and still haven't died. It seems you were hiding your strength well!" The King of Hell called out to the Sun Warrior Leader.
The Sun Warrior Leader did not respond; his chest rose and fell heavily as his arms hung limply at his sides, clearly exhausted.
Seeing that the Sun Warrior Leader remained silent, the King of Hell laughed loudly a few times and said, "It seems I've overestimated you. I thought you still had some strength left; turns out you're just like before..."
From his words, I gathered that the Sun Warrior Leader must have faced off against the King of Hell before, with results likely no different from what we were witnessing now—after all, their strengths were vastly different.
"I suppose since you've used Fiery Annihilation, you've already resigned yourself to death. Let me help you with that..." With that, the King of Hell lifted a foot and aimed it at the Sun Warrior Leader.
I gasped inwardly in alarm, thinking, "If he dies like this, will we ever uncover the truth? And if he dies, will everything just end here?"
As I hesitated whether to step in and help, Yao Long suddenly let out a painful scream, rolling back and forth on the ground as if enduring some immense agony.
Seeing this scene, I hurriedly asked, “Yao Long! Is something wrong with the Worm King inside you?! How can I help you?!”
Hearing my words, Yao Long struggled to calm himself, already drenched in sweat.
He forced a bitter smile on his monstrous face and said haltingly, “Shen Xu... just... just kill me... attack me like I did to you earlier...”
At that moment, a muffled sound came from the direction of the King of Hell and Sun Warrior Leader, as if the King of Hell had stomped down heavily, causing the ground to tremble.
I could no longer afford to think about anything else; I just wanted to find a way to save Yao Long. I quickly reassured him, “There must be another way! Yao Long, please don’t give up!”
I intended to step forward and hold him down to prevent him from harming himself, but at that moment, the Void Spirit within me spoke up: “Although I’m not entirely sure what’s happening to him right now, at the instant he attacked me earlier, I sensed that he seemed aware that releasing his power to attack could be dangerous, yet he still chose to do it…”
Upon hearing this, I was taken aback and shouted inwardly, “If you sensed it, why didn’t you tell me?!”
“Do you think there’s a choice? Just as you can’t bear to see your friend suffer, he surely can’t bear to see you in such a state, so he chose to sacrifice himself…”
The words of the Void Spirit left me speechless. Gritting my teeth, I looked at the tormented Yao Long and slowly picked up Jiang Ling, which lay beside me.
In that moment, the once-lightweight Jiang Ling felt incredibly heavy. “Yao Long, is there really no other way?!” I asked through clenched teeth.
Yao Long replied in agony, “I don’t know! I really don’t know! Please, just kill me! I’m in so much pain!”
Seeing such a tough man as Yao Long uttering such a plea made it clear that his suffering was far from ordinary. He had endured injuries that were no less than any of ours—perhaps even more—but he had never complained or cried out in pain before.
“If you can’t do it, let me handle it…” the Void Spirit whispered within me.
“No need; I’ll do it myself…” With that thought, I raised Jiang Ling, aiming the blade at Yao Long’s neck, intending to behead him swiftly to spare him further suffering.
Holding the sword aloft, I took a deep breath and shouted, “I’m sorry, Yao Long!”
As soon as the words left my mouth, the blade of Jiang Ling glimmered with an eerie Black Light, descending straight down…
Just as the sword was about to make contact with Yao Long’s neck, a sudden forceful impact struck me, sending both me and Yao Long flying several meters away.
At that moment, not only was I prevented from killing Yao Long, but we were also pushed in two different directions.
After a while, when I finally steadied myself and looked around, I realized that Yao Long had vanished without a trace, leaving only deep, bottomless cracks behind.
I felt uneasy. Could it be that Yao Long had been pushed into one of those crevices by the force of the impact?
As I pondered this and glanced over at the King of Hell and the Sun Warrior Leader, I noticed a figure standing between them. This person was of average height but completely drenched in blood red. The Sun Warrior Leader stood unharmed in place, seemingly having been protected from the King of Hell's attack by this mysterious individual.
At that moment, I couldn't help but wonder who this person was, possessing the ability to block an attack from the King of Hell—something even the Sun Warrior Leader had failed to do.
While I was filled with doubt, my greater concern was still for Yao Long. Although I had resolved earlier to end his suffering myself, now he was missing. He might not be dead; perhaps he was somewhere enduring pain alone...
