Hearing the voice, my heart tightened, and I quickly pulled my hand away from Hu Fang's grasp. "Let's go out and take a look!"
With that, Hu Fang nodded and followed me as I rushed out of the room.
Upon entering the hall, I saw Death Apostle and Li Zhisheng gathered around a stone table. Through the gap between their bodies, I vaguely noticed a dark mist, like ink, wafting from the Soul Mirror in Death Apostle's hand.
I thought to myself, "Wait a minute, didn't Death Apostle lose his Void Spirit? Where is this black mist coming from?" With that in mind, I hurried forward with Hu Fang to join them.
Seeing me approach, Li Zhisheng quickly shifted aside to allow me a better view of the Soul Mirror in Death Apostle's hand.
To my shock, I realized that the black mist was not emanating from Death Apostle himself but rather from the black orbs in the mouths of the three dragon patterns along the edge of the Soul Mirror. At that moment, the center of the Soul Mirror was no longer solid; it had turned transparent, allowing us to clearly see the text from the Divine Anomalies Classic below.
"What is going on? What have you done?!" I exclaimed in surprise.
Li Zhisheng replied, "I'm not sure either. Just now, I asked Death Apostle to use the Soul Mirror to look at the Divine Anomalies Classic to see if he could find any clues. But unexpectedly, when he held up the Soul Mirror to examine the book, it changed."
"Does it seem like only Death Apostle can use it?" I leaned closer and asked him, "Have you discovered anything?"
At that moment, Death Apostle was intently studying the content of the book through the Soul Mirror. Hearing my question, he shook his head. "No, I'm wondering if perhaps what's truly crucial isn't these words..."
With that, he quickly flipped through the pages until he reached the one depicting the Nine Star Diagram and stopped.
In that instant, I watched as the Nine Star Diagram reflected in the Soul Mirror began to change shape, as if the ink on the page was slowly dissolving.
"Yes! Yes! This is it!" both Death Apostle and Li Zhisheng exclaimed in unison.
Upon hearing this, Hu Fang hurried over from behind me to see what was happening.
We four gathered around "Divine Anomalies Classic," patiently waiting for what might happen next. My heart was in a knot, filled with both worry and unease, yet tinged with a hint of anticipation.
As the ink on the pages began to dissolve, the original Nine Star Diagram vanished, but the ink did not disappear; instead, it slowly reformed into new characters.
"Strength of Azure, break the earth's momentum."
"The earth's momentum, hidden within the mound."
"The mound's soul, returns to the essence."
"The essence's source, begins in the void."
...
Death Apostle recited each line carefully. Beside him, Li Zhisheng, puzzled by the unfolding events, couldn't help but voice his confusion. "What does this mean? Are we supposed to decipher this poem again?"
"Don't rush; it seems like it's not over yet," I whispered to interrupt Li Zhisheng's speculation and continued to listen to Death Apostle recite...
"Where the spirit of the void resides, all things belong to the spirit."
"All things have a spirit; all spirits return to Void Spirit."
At this point, the ink that had transformed from the Nine Star Life and Death Diagram had completely converged, showing no further reaction.
In that moment, I sensed subtle changes occurring within my body. It felt strange, as if there were several shackles inside me. With the emergence of these verses, those shackles were being released one by one, and an inexplicable power surged within me.
"Is that all?" Li Zhisheng asked in confusion, while the Death Apostle also intended to lift his head and look around for anything unusual.
At that moment, he seemed to notice something strange. The Soul Mirror slipped from his hand with a clatter, landing on the stone table.
"Death Apostle, what's wrong with you?" Li Zhisheng inquired.
The Death Apostle slowly turned his right hand over and muttered to himself, "I think I remember something..."
He then fully revealed the back of his hand to everyone, and there it was—a character glaring back at them—"Murder."
"How could your mark appear too..." Li Zhisheng began to speak but then realized something was off. He swallowed the words and shifted his tone, asking, "Death Apostle, is there something wrong with your body?"
At that moment, the Death Apostle seemed completely lost in his thoughts, ignoring Li Zhisheng's question. Instead, he continued to mumble, "Now I understand why Yang Master wanted to kill me; it turns out it was like this, so that's how it is..." Suddenly, he raised his head and pointed towards the plaque in the center of the hall that bore the characters for "Murder Path."
The three of us quickly looked up in the direction he was pointing, eager to hear what the Death Apostle had to say.
In that instant, we were all startled by what we saw...
Unbeknownst to us, Gu Kai and a woman had silently appeared beneath the plaque of Murder Path. Gu Kai held his long sword in one hand and carried a pitch-black dragon-patterned dagger on his back—the very weapon he had used to seal Yama's Phantom.
The woman stood before us unarmed, mirroring Gu Kai's stance as she stared blankly ahead.
"Gu Kai?! What are you doing here?!" I exclaimed in shock.
Gu Kai said nothing; he simply scrutinized me from head to toe without making any move.
"Did you not hear me? I asked you why you came here," I questioned again, but he still ignored my inquiry, standing there like a wooden statue.
I exchanged glances with the Death Apostle, Li Zhisheng, and Hu Fang, unsure of what to do next.
After a moment of stalemate, realizing that this was going nowhere, I whispered to the three beside me, "Since they don't intend to tell us their purpose and are making no moves, it seems they bear no ill will. Let's go inside and discuss things."
"Alright." After everyone nodded in agreement, we picked up the Divine Anomalies Classic and Soul Mirror from the table and entered Hu Fang's room, closing the door behind us. After all, Gu Kai was an enigmatic figure, and we had no idea what that woman beside him intended. It was best not to provoke them to avoid any potential danger.
Thinking this over, I stood at the door for a moment, listening carefully to ensure there was no movement outside. Once I confirmed it was quiet, I quietly asked, "Death Apostle, you mentioned earlier that you knew why Yang Master wanted to kill you. Isn't it because you betrayed him?"
The Death Apostle's expression darkened as he lowered his voice. "No, if it were just that reason, then when Yao Long and I were captured by the Sun Warrior Leader, we should have been killed then. But we weren't. I think they must have realized something..."
"I am the true path slayer..."
