The person who arrived was a confidant of Mr. C. He was there to find Professor R and take him to Core Headquarters. Core Headquarters was an independent entity, not bound by any department. Several years ago, the founder of Core Headquarters financed the purchase of a remote island, naming it the DBL6 Experimental Base.
The projects developed at the DBL6 Experimental Base all had commercial value. They sold successful projects at high prices to individuals from various strata of society, reaping enormous profits.
For the impoverished, war was a disaster, but for those wealthy individuals in the business world, it was an opportunity for significant advancement. They profited from chaos, seizing the moment to research Bioengineered Humans and Mutants, and to manufacture advanced protective weapons to defend against various Mutants that threatened human life.
They spared no effort in researching any project, even the smallest and most inconspicuous organisms. As long as there was commercial value, they would go to any lengths to experiment. Once successful, it would bring both fame and fortune.
Each had their own motives, while relevant departments turned a blind eye. As long as they did not violate international treaties or cause significant damage through illegal operations, generally no one would deliberately trouble them.
Amidst the smoke of war, the DBL6 Experimental Base had become one of the country's important experimental facilities. Of course, this was a form of patriotic contribution; the scientists at the base came from all corners of the world, including foreign male scientists. Just as the war was about to end, an incident occurred at the DBL6 Experimental Base: a small number of allied troops and scientists stationed there mysteriously disappeared.
Then new scientists arrived, and more incidents followed...
Professor R recalled everything from the past, feeling a strange pain in his heart. Time after time he had been dispatched, only to fail repeatedly. When he reached the monitoring room at Core Headquarters and caught sight of the horrifying images frozen on the large screen, his heartache intensified... His expression changed as he questioned Mr. C about whether there were mutated bacteria among the members of the Fifth Team he had dispatched, which could have caused such a catastrophe.
Mr. C stood there with a gloomy face, indifferent to Professor R's doubts and directly ignoring him...
Matt glanced around cautiously before leaning closer to Professor R and explaining, "The members of the Fifth Team underwent strict checks and signed a Life-and-Death Contract; they shouldn't have brought any mutated bacteria. There are no traces of Bloodline Worms at DBL6 Experimental Base. The base underwent a thorough cleansing before Hansen was allowed to remain."
Hansen was a foreign PhD who had stayed in China since the outbreak of war; he loved China's cultural landscape and local traditions. He had a particular interest in Chinese characters and could be considered somewhat knowledgeable about China.
However, just half a month ago, Hansen suddenly lost contact with Core Headquarters. Core Headquarters dispatched First Group, Second Group, and Third Group to investigate. They also brought secret orders from Core Headquarters and Professor R to secretly search for data regarding immortal warriors and nanomachine doctors. Yet each dispatch ended in failure, leading them to reluctantly send out Fourth Group—the most elite team from Core Headquarters—to investigate.
Unexpectedly, Mr. C repeatedly intervened, insisting on recalling Fourth Group and sending in Fifth Team instead. Moreover, when dispatching Fifth Team to DBL6 Experimental Base successfully, he ordered that none of Fourth Group's members be retained; all were eliminated.
Mr. C was a suspicious person who doubted whether Number One from Fourth Group was actually an assassin sent by Professor R to deal with his family after repeatedly failing to obtain data and information on Number One.
Thoughts stubbornly rooted in his mind, the plan to dispatch the Fifth Team and eliminate the Fourth Group had failed. Mr. C's father, the president, was furious upon hearing this news. He berated his son and hurried to apologize to Professor R, hoping he could clean up this mess.
Feeling guilty, Mr. C left the Core Headquarters with his head hung low.
Professor R spat a thick phlegm at his retreating figure and muttered, "You called me here just to roll in bare skin? Do you even realize that when you take a dump, someone else has to wipe your ass?"
Ms. B handed Professor R the written report of the Fifth Team's incident for his signature.
Without lifting his eyelids or bothering to look at her, Professor R picked up a pen and swiftly scribbled on the paper. In a heavy nasal tone, he said, "Your master has already left; why are you still here?"
Ms. B's face flushed, but she stood her ground and replied, "Old bald donkey, just wait."
"Get lost!"
After driving Ms. B away with insults, Professor R finally settled down to analyze the situation carefully. He ultimately decided to reactivate members of the Fourth Group.
Meanwhile, Lin Yu and Amy were searching for the pit area mentioned by Xiao Qiang when Lin Yu's wristwatch began flashing a small green light rapidly. She pressed a button in confusion, wondering if it was Xiao Qiang. Instantly, the watch's surface transformed into a screen. A face she loathed appeared on it, causing her to gasp and whisper, " Professor R..."
"Lin Yu, return to the base control center as soon as possible; I have something to tell you."
"..." Lin Yu was startled and thought: Could it be that the Fifth Team members have already arrived? Are they eager to take action against me?
"Lin Yu, you have no choice. You must obey my orders and hurry back to the base."
"Understood, Lin Yu will return immediately."
With hopes of finding Xiao Qiang dashed during his return to the base, Lin Yu continuously checked his wristwatch. He anxiously wished for Xiao Qiang to contact him soon... At the same time, he worried about Professor R reappearing; if that happened, it would occupy the line and Xiao Qiang might miss the chance to reach her.
Xiao Qiang, Li Hang, and Wu Yi moved Wen Kai to a hidden corner where he couldn't be seen. Once everything was in order, they planned their next steps. Just as the three of them began to relax and take a moment to rest, a sound suddenly echoed from five hundred meters ahead, where they had discovered the dead body.
"What is that?" Wu Yi asked, his voice tense with anxiety.
Li Hang shook his Laser Gun nonchalantly and replied, "Just a bird."
Xiao Qiang perked up, his ears alert as he furrowed his brow, directing his gaze toward the source of the sound. The corridor stretched out before him—dark and seemingly endless. He thought he saw something darting toward them at lightning speed.
"Run, run, run!" he shouted, pushing the terrified Wu Yi backward. Behind them was the control room; if they could just slip inside and close the Gate, they would be safe from whatever menacing creature might be approaching.
Xiao Qiang propelled Wu Yi into the control room and turned back to see Li Hang slowly retreating. He was desperate to catch a glimpse of whatever was daring enough to flaunt its presence before them.
"Hurry..."
Xiao Qiang yelled as he grabbed Li Hang's shoulder and yanked him into the control room. In that split second, a cold breeze brushed past his neck. Instinctively, he turned his head slightly to glance back and couldn't help but gasp in shock.
