“Eye Patch Man? What did he tell you?”
Professor R's muscles around his eyes twitched as if wound up like a spring. He seemed quite anxious about the Eye Patch Man that Lin Yu had mentioned.
On the big screen, Lin Yu shook his head. “He said very little. He... died during the attack by the Living Dead.”
“Are you sure he’s dead?” A glimmer of light appeared in Professor R's eyes, laced with skepticism.
Lin Yu lowered his head in thought for a moment, then raised it again, speaking seriously. “Yes.”
To alleviate JD2's concerns and insecurities within the designated time frame, Professor R had to expend a third of his brain cells, striving to regain her trust.
Now, being able to communicate calmly with JD2 was a source of great relief fo Professor R R, allowing him to finally lift a heavy weight off his heart. Just moments ago, JD2 had been filled with hostility and distrust towards him. That was not the hardest part; the most challenging task was to further extract recent information about Xiao Qiang from her.
Professor R swiped through a series of images of a baby sucking on a bottle... and once again turned his attention to the silent figure of JD2 on the screen.
JD1 and JD2 were victors from numerous hard-fought tournaments. He believed that in the future world, JD1 and JD2 would be the best partners. Among all the JD programming teams, JD1 and JD2 were truly Professor R's pride and foundational assets.
“How is Xiao Qiang doing now? The nanodetector can’t locate him. Please tell me what you know…”
Lin Yu hesitated, staring at the professor who claimed to be her and Xiao Qiang's guardian. For some reason, seeing this face used to evoke strong feelings of disgust and aversion in him. However, after hearing snippets of stories about their childhood together, looking at this face didn’t seem so hateful anymore; it even felt somewhat familiar.
Noticing a flicker of hesitation on JD2's face, Professor R once again employed emotional language and sincere expressions as he spoke to her. “You and Xiao Qiang are both my children. I ask for nothing in return as long as you both are well…” At this point, Professor R genuinely squeezed out two tears and continued, “You have become an indispensable part of my life. So, do you understand your guardian's good intentions?”
“What do you want me to do?”
"Are you telling the truth? Did Xiao Qiang take them down to the Stratum?"
"Yes."
The Professor R was taken aback. "You're the only one left at the base?" As he spoke, he caught a glimpse of the moving blue enemy alert point on the Nano Monitor. "You need to hurry to the storage chamber. There's a small aircraft inside. Activate it, and the hatch will open automatically. Then you can pilot the aircraft away from the base and look for Xiao Qiang."
"Why do I have to leave?" Lin Yu was confused. Perhaps it wouldn't be long before Xiao Qiang and the others returned. If she left hastily, what if they came back and couldn't find her? And what if they missed each other in time? What would be the consequences?
"Just listen to me, hurry... something bad is moving toward your location."
Lin Yu's expression changed. "What? Why can't I..." Suddenly, she turned to look at another independent Monitor...
The large screen malfunctioned, filled with static and electromagnetic interference sounds...
"What’s going on? Why is there a problem at such a critical moment?" The Professor R suddenly resembled a gambler who had lost everything, spitting as he shouted loudly. When the Monitor cleared up again, he eagerly looked at the screen and asked repeatedly, "Lin Yu, can you hear me?"
Shifting her gaze from the frozen image on the Monitor, Lin Yu turned to face the Professor R. "Xiao Qiang and the others are back."
The Professor R emphasized, "That’s not Xiao Qiang; it’s... it’s a Mutant."
"How is that possible? Can Mutants mimic humans?"
The Professor R felt a sense of despair at Number Two's stubbornness and ignorance. He pressed buttons frantically, trying to show her the terrifying true form of the Mutant—just then, Number Two's image suddenly became thin and transparent like a piece of paper...
"What is going on?" Professor R exclaimed, sweating profusely and momentarily flustered.
His assistant, Matt, suddenly interjected, "This is a Nano-Simulated Human..."
The words jolted Professor R back to reality. He slapped his bald head in frustration, cursing under his breath, "I really shouldn't underestimate these Wolf Cubs that I've poured my life's work into. They managed to slip away right under my nose, using a simulated human to confuse my keen observation skills and deceive my exceptional deductive abilities."
Wiping the sweat from his forehead with his palm, Professor R sighed, "The Tough Guy Training Ground is a place for selecting elite seeds. It's also one of the best ways to eliminate inferior products. Numbers 1 and 2 have repeatedly triumphed; I originally intended for them not to enter this time, but I didn't expect..." He swallowed the unfinished thought and began tapping his fingers rhythmically on the table. Without turning around to the usually taciturn Matt behind him, he said, "Let's make a bet; this time, Numbers 1 and 2 will win again." After a long silence without a response, he turned to find that Matt had left without him noticing.
Lin Yu patted Amy beside him and skillfully maneuvered the joystick of the aircraft. "Amy, thank you."
"It's nothing major, but the upcoming Tough Guy Training event will depend on you."
"Are you sure Xiao Qiang and the others are there?"
"Of course; Amy is the smartest robot in the world."
"Wow, you're quite full of yourself, aren't you?"
Lin Yu focused intently while continuing to tease Amy. "What kind of environment is Tough Guy Training?"

The Eye Patch Man vividly recounted how he fell into a lake and struggled to escape. Accidentally slipping into a tunnel-like opening, he found himself here before he even realized it.
Xiao Qiang was dissatisfied with the memory fragment of Eye Patch Man, feeling that something was missing.
"Do you want me to fill in the gaps?" Wen Kai suddenly spoke up.
Xiao Qiang remained silent, nodding calmly. As they continued forward, his gaze cautiously scanned the surroundings, as if sensing the presence of enemies.
Wen Kai recounted the scene where numerous Living Dead surrounded Xiao Qiang.
Eye Patch Man appeared quite composed.
Yet, Xiao Qiang kept pressing for details about what happened next.
Wen Kai grinned and joked, "There was no next part. Seeing so many Living Dead attacking you, anyone would be a fool not to run for their life."
"There is a next part..." Eye Patch Man said, his single eye glinting with intrigue as he focused on the Chain around Xiao Qiang's neck. Suddenly, he reached out and grabbed it. "The secret lies here; this Chain saved you."
A seemingly ordinary Chain, one that could be found discarded by the roadside without anyone picking it up, had actually saved Xiao Qiang's life? It was too unbelievable and utterly ridiculous. The first to burst into laughter was Wen Kai. "Hahaha! Are you a screenwriter or a director? Even if you are, it's clear you're not doing very well; otherwise, you wouldn't have come up with such a lame plot to fool us!"
