The Living Dead were terrifying, but nothing compared to the Skeleton Mutant seen in Stratum. However, when compared to the grotesque human hybrid before him, with its head and face writhing with blood-red worms, those were nothing to be afraid of. Members of the Fifth Team held a steadfast belief; even in death, they were determined to complete their mission by eliminating the members of the Fourth Group.
Wu Yi was retreating as Clone Wen Kai from the Fifth Team closed in on him. Their faces shifted rapidly, sometimes resembling humans, while at other times countless Bloodline Worms emerged from their hair roots, crawling all over their faces. Wu Yi, who had never experienced such a horrifying scene, trembled in fear, his legs shaking as he retreated faster.
Seeing them getting closer, just a few steps away from the aircraft, he let out a sharp scream, "Oh no..." He had no time to raise his Laser Flame Gun to shoot; instead, he ran desperately toward the aircraft.
But he could not outrun Wen Kai, who had already transformed into a terrifying hybrid creature.
Wu Yi was grabbed by Wen Kai, and then a hand reached out from the back, with massive Bloodline Worms wriggling out of the sleeves. This was actually the work of Li Hang from the Fourth Group; he had introduced a liquid containing mutated maggots into the Bloodline Worms' vessel, causing them to become infected and evolve.
As previously mentioned, Wu Yi was prone to overthinking, but when faced with war, he displayed remarkable bravery. When he saw those worms slithering out of his opponent's sleeves, he thought it was over for him; in just a few minutes, he might become one of them. Despite this grim thought, he still struggled to break free from the clutches of the hybrid creature.
Instinctively clenching his fist with all his might, he aimed to strike without touching those invasive Bloodline Worms and deliver a heavy blow that would force his opponent to retreat and buy himself some time to escape.
With a punch thrown, there was a sound—thud! To his surprise, it felt effortless as his bare fist pierced through the creature's ribcage. Wu Yi's fist recoiled in shock as the hybrid let out an ear-piercing shriek.
He didn’t have time to ponder what had just happened; upon seeing four more hybrid creatures lunging at him, he turned and ran.
The aircraft was equipped with laser devices that had already been activated. As he boarded it, he spun around and aimed at the hybrids jumping up to grab onto the aircraft's frame. He fired laser beams—zap! zap! The beams were thin as hair and swept across the necks and chests of the hybrid creatures.
The leaping hybrids stared blankly at the moving beams on their bodies; they felt a burning sensation akin to being pricked by needles. Their faces were covered with Bloodline Worms except for their features. It looked utterly disgusting. Wu Yi muttered as he spun around again, silently counting... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 seconds!
With splatters of blood flying everywhere, within those five seconds, all of the hybrid creatures disintegrated into pieces. Like slicing watermelons, wherever the laser beams passed through left clean cuts on the ground where remnants of Fifth Team members lay sprawled about alongside writhing Bloodworms.
In a meat-grinding frenzy mode, Wu Yi unleashed another barrage of laser beams at those struggling Bloodline Worms until they turned into a puddle of blood on the ground!
Li Hang helped Lin Yu, who had just taken a few steps, and instinctively felt something was off. She turned her head and, sure enough, not far away on the pipe, there hung a fully evolved Skeleton Mutant, like a bat upside down.
It seemed that this Skeleton Mutant had always been there; it just hadn't made a move when Xiao Qiang and the others were around. Now, with only the two of them left—one a woman and the other slightly concussed—the Skeleton Mutant moved its hook-like legs, spinning around with its green eyes fixed intently on the pulsing carotid artery in Li Hang's neck.
"You go first; let me handle it," Li Hang said as she raised her Laser Gun at the Skeleton Mutant and fired a burst.
Lin Yu didn't have time to say much; she shielded Li Hang behind her and raised her arm. She fired another burst at the unharmed Skeleton Mutant—bang, bang, bang! Whoosh! The incendiary round exploded where the Skeleton Mutant had just been.
A choking smoke filled the entire pipe area. Lin Yu felt anxious as she scanned her surroundings, losing sight of the Skeleton Mutant.
The sound of wings flapping—whoosh! The air carried a familiar rancid odor. Lin Yu focused her mind, arms vertical, as if she were a floating cloud in still air. With intense telekinetic energy shooting from her eyes, she spun into the air while Li Hang watched in astonishment. Around her, everything changed dramatically; the pipes clanged together, and dust particles swirled up without any wind.
Her calm demeanor faced the approaching figure with sunken features and sharp teeth like iron nails, highlighted by its delicate capillary wings and that heavy rancid smell—it was so close that time seemed to freeze for an instant—the tiny dust particles floated in stillness!
Li Hang, close by, felt her facial muscles twitch uncontrollably with pain.
Inches away, there was a silent explosion of invisible lethality. With a series of popping sounds—poof! Poof!—a chilling scream echoed as blood splattered everywhere. The Skeleton Mutant no longer existed; it had transformed into a pool of blood.
Li Hang glanced at her watch in shock; Lin Yu had killed this fierce Skeleton Mutant in just 25 seconds.
As the floating dust settled to the ground, Lin Yu appeared calm as a tranquil spring. With an easy demeanor, she helped up the stunned Li Hang and gently asked, "Are you okay?"
"I'm... I'm fine..." Li Hang's eyes sparkled with emotion as she suddenly grasped Lin Yu's hand tightly. "Lin Yu, how about being my girlfriend?"
Lin Yu smiled faintly, withdrawing her hand and saying in a gentle tone, "You're really amusing. What time is it now, and you're still in the mood to talk about romantic affairs?"
"I knew you would refuse. You like Xiao Qiang. But can he provide you with a stable living environment? I..."
Lin Yu interrupted him, "Let's not talk about this. We need to focus on escaping." With that, she supported him and started to move.
When they reached the exit, she was taken aback. The aircraft was gone. After carefully scanning the surroundings, she found no trace of the Skeleton Mutant. Besides, Skeleton Mutants were only suited to dwell in dark, damp Stratum; they wouldn't risk piloting an aircraft to the Ground.
So who drove the aircraft away? Lin Yu thought of one person—Wu Yi!
Speak of the devil, and he shall appear. The buzzing sound of the aircraft reached Lin Yu's ears. Thinking she had misheard, she perked up her ears again and confirmed that the sound was indeed coming from the entrance.
After taking a few steps, the aircraft slowly entered the designated passageway. Through the transparent bulletproof glass window, she could see that the pilot of the aircraft was Wu Yi.
"You bastard!" Lin Yu shouted angrily as she stepped forward and grabbed Wu Yi by the collar without hesitation. She genuinely wanted to slap him hard but ultimately released her grip under Li Hang's persuasion... Furious, she turned away, unwilling to acknowledge him.
Wu Yi cautiously approached and helped Li Hang up, apologizing to Lin Yu, "I'm glad you're okay. I... I was wrong; I regret it!"
