Lin Yu took a Laser Flame Gun for self-defense, while the remaining ones belonged to Wen Kai, Li Hang, and Xiao Qiang.
One, two, three—estimating that Lin Yu and the others had already crawled into the ventilation shaft, Xiao Qiang activated the Gate button. Whoosh—the Laser Flame Gun emitted a blue flame, hissing continuously as explosions erupted outside the main control room's Gate. Countless flames soared into the air, accompanied by wisps of white smoke that carried a burnt, acrid odor throughout the space.
At a distance from the Gate to the center of the main control room, Xiao Qiang stood his ground, using the remaining laser flame incendiary rounds to intercept the fearsome Flying Skull Mutants charging at the entrance.
Suddenly—Xiao Qiang froze as the Laser Flame Gun displayed a blue warning alert: Warning, energy depleted.
Without time to think, he quickly switched to a second gun and strapped it onto his arm. Frustrated, he decided to equip the remaining two Laser Flame Guns on both arms.
With a surge of determination, he fired rapidly—tap tap tap with his left hand! Tap tap tap with his right hand! The overwhelming firepower sent those frenzied, screeching monsters reeling. Noticing that his laser energy was nearly exhausted, he activated the Light Energy Source with his left hand while continuing to fire with his right. Tap tap tap—a shot hit its target, and boom! The burning Skeleton Mutant was engulfed in flames, plummeting from mid-air like a meteor. The acrid smell of charred flesh filled the air as it fell to the ground, writhing and emitting a piercing scream…
He retreated calmly step by step. When an Arc Light shot out with dazzling blue brilliance, he couldn't bear to look at the horrific scene of those monsters disintegrating and swiftly dove into the ventilation shaft where Lin Yu and the others had escaped.
Dazed and confused, Xiao Qiang couldn't recall how he crawled into the ventilation shaft or when he ended up on the Ground. He was jolted awake by a low sobbing sound and indistinct cries.
Opening his eyes in a white tent—Wu Yi, with tear-streaked cheeks, stared blankly at him. Upon seeing Xiao Qiang awake, she disregarded the presence of others and leaned closer—her warm breath filled with affection lingered on his lips. She slowly closed her eyes as a single tear rolled down her eyelashes…
“Cough cough…” Wu Yi blushed deeply, feeling awkward. She couldn't hide or stay put; caught in indecision, she finally cleared her throat and said, “You two continue; just pretend I'm invisible.” With that, she turned away and feigned nonchalance, humming an off-key tune.
From Lin Yu's lips, Xiao Qiang learned that Wen Kai and Li Hang had been taken away by an aircraft piloted by Professor R. They had to leave! One had a concussion while the other was covered in injuries—
After Wu Yi turned her back on them and exited the tent, Lin Yu handed something to Xiao Qiang—the Chain!
“He—said: I'm sorry.”
Taking the Chain, Xiao Qiang looked up at her tear-filled eyes and asked, “What else?”
Lin Yu furrowed her brow slightly and whispered with concern, “Li Hang and Wen Kai seem reluctant to leave. They looked so attached when they were being carried away, staring intently at the opening…” As she spoke, her voice broke into sobs; tears rolled down her cheeks as her eyes turned red from weeping.
“Did Professor R not mention me?”
“Yes, I said you—got into trouble and were eaten by Skeleton Mutant.”
“Haha—” Xiao Qiang laughed. Lin Yu was as sharp as ever, understanding his feelings with just a glance. He gazed deeply and said emotionally, “Thank you.”
However, Lin Yu did not share in the joy; instead, he looked worried. “He might not believe me. It’s not safe here; we need to leave quickly.”
Xiao Qiang was troubled. “Leave? How do we leave?” He leaned forward to look at the tent entrance. Suddenly, a person walked in. This individual had a commanding presence, a full forehead, and an air of righteousness, dressed in a solemn blue outfit, his gaze fixed intensely on him—
“Matt?”
Matt strode over, extending his sturdy palm toward Xiao Qiang. The latter glanced at Matt’s well-groomed hands with thick, shiny nails and politely extended his own hand. Their hands clasped together—a soft and warm sensation washed over him, as if they had known each other for centuries.
Matt stared at Xiao Qiang—his deep black eyes held a chilling intensity, with a fierce aura emanating from him…
As Matt and Xiao Qiang communicated silently through their gazes, Lin Yu approached with Amy, followed closely by Wu Yi.
Xiao Qiang shifted his gaze to Amy, surprised. “Amy—”
“Amy woke up from her nap and saw you all; it’s wonderful!” Amy said with a hint of self-importance, causing everyone else to burst into laughter.
He couldn’t join in the laughter. “What’s going on?”
Matt smiled at Lin Yu and Xiao Qiang. “This place is very safe; take your time to talk. Wu Yi and I will step outside for a moment…” With that, he gave Wu Yi a pat on the shoulder, and the two of them walked out one after the other.
Lin Yu lowered his head but suddenly looked up again. “Yes, we’ve escaped from Professor R. When I crawled out, Wen Kai was already unconscious. It was Wu Yi and the people brought by Professor R who helped me safely escape danger. Li Hang and Wen Kai are seriously injured and need to be rushed to the hospital. But Professor R treated their lives like a joke, insisting on checking on Xiao Qiang…”
“And then?”
Lin Yu glanced at Xiao Qiang with a hint of apprehension and murmured, "In a moment of desperation, I said you volunteered to stay behind to save us—only to be surrounded and eaten by those Skeleton Mutants."
Xiao Qiang shook his head. "You underestimate Professor R's intelligence. He's a suspicious person; how could he possibly believe that?"
Lin Yu nodded. "Yes, he didn't believe it. However, he had no choice but to leave with Wen Kai and Li Hang—"
Xiao Qiang was taken aback, furrowing his brow. "What exactly happened that made him change his mind and leave?"
"His superior was furious and issued a death order for him to return immediately, or else he would be held accountable for all the losses from the failed base experiment."
"Oh." Xiao Qiang seemed to understand, his sharp gaze unwavering as he continued to question, "How did you find me? What happened with Amy? And Matt?" Then, unable to wait for Lin Yu's response, he looked around at the unfamiliar surroundings and asked, "Where is this place?"
Lin Yu sighed heavily. "It's a turning point. Professor R didn't believe my words and insisted on seeing your body himself."
Xiao Qiang interjected, "Even if the core president issued a death order, he wouldn't care?"
Lin Yu nodded. "Yes, he brushed off the president's words and ordered Wu Yi to take him down to see. When they reached the control room door, they saw a pile of charred bodies burning, thick black smoke filling the air with a terrible stench, and it was dark all around—Wu Yi told him that Xiao Qiang was among those burning bodies. He screamed in shock, his eyes wide with rage as he stumbled back out without saying a word, taking Wen Kai and Li Hang with him. Just as Professor R was leaving, Matt managed to contact me… Later, we put on gas masks to search for you but couldn't find you. We first thought you might have been dragged into the Skeleton Mutant's lair. Instead of finding you, we unexpectedly came across Amy in a sleeping state."
