The chaotic footsteps and heavy breathing were accompanied by a roar that was anything but human, startling Xiao Qiang. For safety, he quickly hid in a recess, concealing himself.
In the phantom light, thoughts were blocked by the reversal of time, leaving only a fleeting consideration of what was to come. Xiao Qiang once wondered if the era he landed in would be filled with terrifying scenes of swirling sands and flying stones. Yet, he never imagined it would resemble a vast open-air natural zoo.
Running were Lin Yu and Wu Yi. Hot on their heels was a Wolf Pack! Was it not a bit exaggerated for wolves to dare chase the most intelligent beings on Earth in broad daylight? According to common sense, wolf packs typically did not venture out during the day.
Seeing Lin Yu, Xiao Qiang lunged forward, wanting to protect her. However, to his surprise, she seemed rather indifferent and grabbed Wu Yi instead, their interaction appearing quite ambiguous.
Though Xiao Qiang felt a twinge of frustration, he quickly dismissed his thoughts and joined them to fend off the wolves. The pack bared their teeth, gleaming white fangs flashing ominously as they drooled with crimson tongues hanging out, their green eyes glinting with a chilling light.
It was just a Wolf Pack; why scare himself? Without hesitation, he raised his arm to prepare for a shot—
But Wu Yi pressed down on his arm. "Dude, don’t shoot recklessly. Look closely."
Xiao Qiang focused and realized that the wolf pack had not advanced another step. The group stirred restlessly as if retreating—were they afraid of him? He speculated in astonishment when suddenly, from behind them came a tiger's roar!
A tiger! Wasn't it the natural enemy of wolves? No wonder they halted. With a whistle, Wu Yi grabbed Lin Yu and dashed toward the nearest building.
Xiao Qiang was stunned; what were they doing? Ignoring his presence and fleeing separately? A low growl from the tiger echoed as the wolf pack scattered in panic.
Not daring to linger any longer, he sprinted after them into what appeared to be a collapsing structure.
A loud, deep roar resonated from another location. Having only seen animal pictures in books, Xiao Qiang could only interpret this sound through textual descriptions, temporarily defining it as the roar of a lion.
The wolf pack fled in all directions until they vanished from sight. The three humans could only hide within the building, too frightened to make a sound.
"Let’s hope tigers and lions are blind as bats and can’t see us," Wu Yi muttered to himself. Although he pretended not to recognize Xiao Qiang, his cowardly nature remained unchanged.
Xiao Qiang scoffed, "Tigers have six times the vision of humans; lions have about three times. Why don’t you go ask them if they see you?"
Wu Yi dramatically tightened his hold on Lin Yu, ignoring Xiao Qiang's words!
The roars of lions and tigers echoed long after they had passed. This deep and loud growl sent shivers down the spine of every creature that heard it. As the tiger's roar gradually faded away, everything seemed to return to tranquility. Through the building's windows, several reindeer quietly grazed on wild grass sprouting from cracks in the ground.
Xiao Qiang had some understanding of animal behavior. For instance, wolves were fierce, united, solitary yet spiritual, and incredibly intelligent, symbolizing tenacity. Wolves possessed remarkable perseverance and memory, held a sense of dignity, and rarely gave up on their prey. They were cunning and rational, cruel yet maintained a complete system. If tigers and lions left, the wolf pack might quickly return; once they caught a whiff of their scent lingering, they would ascend the floors to devour them.
Xiao Qiang felt anxious but knew he couldn't devise a wise plan without understanding the situation first. In the dimly lit space that allowed a sliver of light to seep through, he felt uneasy watching Lin Yu and Wu Yi nestled together.
What was unfolding before him was absurd and unbelievable. Yet there they were... "What are you two doing?" Xiao Qiang questioned angrily, his eyes narrowing in disbelief.
Strangely, Lin Yu and Wu Yi seemed baffled by his inquiry.
"You're crazy; why would we have anything to do with you?"
"Hey! Wu Yi, what do you mean by that?" Xiao Qiang retorted furiously. With his brows furrowed tightly, he suddenly pondered a troubling thought. He turned to Lin Yu, who was staring at him with confusion and hostility. "We might have come to the wrong era."
Lin Yu didn't comprehend Xiao Qiang's words or perhaps simply didn't regard him at all.
"What did he say?" she asked Wu Yi.
Wu Yi shrugged. "Maybe he's just crazy."
Seeing them look at him as if he were a stranger, their tone unfriendly, Xiao Qiang was taken aback. He stared at them in astonishment. "What happened when you entered the light circle? How could you forget me? I'm Xiao Qiang!" He couldn't believe that in just a few seconds, such residual effects from the time loop could occur.
"You know us?" Lin Yu seemed to be trying hard to recall something but appeared lost as she questioned Xiao Qiang.
Before Xiao Qiang could respond, Wu Yi interjected, "Impossible. The only people left here are us two; he shouldn't belong to this area. Don't trust strangers easily..."
"Wu Yi, have you lost your mind? Why are you pretending at a time like this?" As he spoke, he stepped forward and grabbed Wu Yi by the collar. Under Lin Yu's surprised scream, he fixed his piercing gaze on them both. "Wake up! We come from the future world of 2050! What is this place? What kind of situation are we in? What is going on with you two? Someone tell me!"
Focused on confronting Wu Yi, Lin Yu raised her arm and landed a solid punch on Xiao Qiang's back. The searing pain forced Xiao Qiang to release his grip on Wu Yi and turn around with a pained expression directed at Lin Yu. "If it's just the two of us left in this world, would you be scared?"
Lin Yu moved her lips mechanically as she replied, "Yes." Her expression grew complex as her gaze penetrated deep into Xiao Qiang's heart; she stared for a long time before asking, "Who are you? Who am I?" In a panic, she covered her head with her hands and shouted uncontrollably, "Ah! Why can't I remember?"
Wu Yi stood there dejectedly, indifferent to Lin Yu's suffering. He sighed and said, "She encountered a minor glitch in the reincarnation loop and has lost her memory."
“Pfft,” Xiao Qiang glared at Wu Yi, wishing he could punch him hard enough to knock his jaw askew.
Wu Yi shrugged casually, unapologetically glancing at Lin Yu, who was still in a dazed state. “Don’t be an idiot when good things are handed to you on a silver platter.”
Xiao Qiang grabbed his collar again, nearly lifting him off the ground, and spoke each word with emphasis, “She is not an object, you scum.”
“Fine, I’m scum, and you’re the king of humans. So let me ask you this: there are no humans here, no so-called Skeleton Mutants. Where is the base located? Are we supposed to fight the Living Dead again? Also, what year did we come from, and why are we out of sync?”
Xiao Qiang tried to suppress his anger, his chest heaving as he struggled to remain calm. “Just give me a moment to think.”
Lin Yu remained silent, trying hard to recall that familiar yet strange phrase. This person in front of him felt very familiar, especially the scent he carried... Looking over at Wu Yi, who had always acted as his protector, he noticed that Wu Yi seemed hesitant, unwilling to step any closer.
“It must be Matt. When the Reincarnation of Light and Shadow was spinning, he was counting. Either we’ve arrived a decade early or a decade late.”
“What should we do then?”
“Let’s try resetting the Reincarnation of Light and Shadow circle.”
