Lin Yu understood Xiao Qiang. She and Wu Yi were retreating in sync towards a common direction.
The feeling of being chased by the Mutated Skeleton was akin to experiencing the Cretaceous period. The Skeleton Mutants, resembling Carnivorous Tyrannosaurs, moved swiftly and ferociously, tearing apart their prey with bites and claws. Now, the two of them felt like they were fleeing for their lives, with the Skeleton Mutants screeching and leaping behind them, lunging forward.
These Skeleton Mutants differed from ordinary zombies and Living Dead in that they possessed human-like intelligence and sharp reflexes, making their movements superior to those of the previous two types of creatures. This clearly indicated that these beings did not originally belong to Earth; they might be mimetic organisms that evolved through constant imitation during their encounters with humans, resulting in their current form.
Fortunately, the desolate space devoid of vegetation, while not providing any shelter, also exposed the ferocious Skeleton Mutants as they charged forward without cover.
In the dim night, moving points of light flickered like stars, jumping and lunging towards the DBL6 research base. In front of these twinkling lights were two agile figures that occasionally revealed their exact positions while at other times hid behind towering boulders shrouded in darkness.
Xiao Qiang suddenly changed his mind. He instructed Zou Xia to take care of the heavily pregnant Zhao Liya. Standing at a vantage point, he peered through the black night towards the distant flickering lights in the dark corners. A faint smile curved his lips, reflecting a sense of calm understanding.
Zou Xia rushed over to inform Xiao Qiang that Zhao Liya was about to give birth.
Upon hearing this, Xiao Qiang panicked; nothing could go wrong at this critical moment. If they didn’t move the pregnant woman away, it would be troublesome if she gave birth here. During labor, there would be a significant amount of blood, which the Skeleton Mutants could detect with their keen sense of smell. Zhao Liya would be in danger—not only her but also her newborn child, who would become a tempting feast for the Skeleton Mutants.
If the child were lost, then Xiao Qiang’s future existence would vanish in an instant, perhaps dissipating like a gust of wind. Just thinking about it sent chills down his spine. Time was pressing; he urgently told Zou Xia, “Aunt Zou, hurry and inform Professor R. This is his territory; he has to take charge and surely won’t ignore a life about to be born!”
Professor R was on a call with his superiors when he heard Zou Xia's message. To his surprise, he decisively ordered, “Send her away; take the pregnant woman to a safe area to give birth.”
In this critical situation, Zhao Liya appeared clumsy as she received help from everyone around her. Slowly grasping the handrails of the aircraft, she glanced at Xiao Qiang who was watching her intently before silently stepping into the cabin.
Just moments earlier, they had moved Xiao Chongjun's body away and hidden it from view to prevent Zhao Liya from seeing it; yet she seemed to know something was amiss.
Zhao Liya's eyes were filled with a subtle sadness that left Xiao Qiang at a loss for words; he quickly looked away, unable to meet her gaze.
Matt piloted the aircraft away from its original position. The craft flashed various indicator lights as it ascended into the air, disappearing into the darkness in an instant.
The night was truly dark, like a black curtain that swallowed the light. Xiao Qiang had a plan ready to lure the enemy deeper and then eliminate the Skeleton Mutants with a spotlight. He reassured his companions not to be afraid; as long as they stayed inside, they should be safe.
Despite his calm demeanor, Xiao Qiang's heart sank as Zhao Liya left. He couldn't shake off an unsettling feeling that gnawed at him for reasons he couldn't quite understand.
His selflessness and sense of duty made Wen Zhaoqi and Hansen feel guilty, as if they owed him something. When Xiao Qiang called them to come inside, both of them stood frozen, unwilling to leave.
"We don't have time; you need to go in now," he urged.
"Child, let us help you. Consider it atonement," Hansen said, his fierce appearance belying a kind heart beneath.
Xiao Qiang hesitated but nodded vigorously. "Alright, Uncle Hansen, please control the power switch. Uncle Wen, adjust the spotlight to shine directly on those monsters; we need to maximize the effect for a one-time extermination."
Before he could finish speaking, a chaotic sound accompanied by heavy breathing reached their ears. Shadows began to emerge from nearby, creeping closer. Xiao Qiang's expression hardened. "Be careful; they're coming."
In front of him, Lin Yu and Wu Yi appeared pale and gasping for breath. Xiao Qiang quickly supported her and asked Wu Yi, "Are you alright? Can you hold on?"
As he spoke, the charging Skeleton Mutants were almost upon them. Suddenly, a blinding blue light erupted—thud! Thud! Thud! The spotlight focused on the attacking Skeleton Mutants, and in an instant, smoke began to billow from their bodies as tiny flames ignited. The affected Skeleton Mutants shrieked and clawed at the air in desperation as the flames roared higher, quickly turning them into piles of glowing ash.
After their first major victory, Xiao Qiang and Hansen felt a rush of excitement. However, there was no time to celebrate as another wave of Skeleton Mutants charged in. Wen Zhaoqi skillfully adjusted the spotlight angle, transforming the incoming Skeleton Mutants into moving fireballs under the concentrated light. Amidst the flames, it was almost as if they were struggling like living beings.
The acrid smoke filled the air with a burnt odor that stung their noses. Under the spotlight, the flames gradually extinguished after a few moments of eerie silence. Was it really this simple? It felt too unexpectedly smooth for Xiao Qiang's liking. He quietly asked Lin Yu, "Do you think more will show up?"
"There should be more; they reproduce. The ones we just eliminated were males—wherever there are males, there must be a Uterus present, and we haven't seen that yet."
Suddenly, Wen Zhaoqi shouted, "Look!" Sure enough, Xiao Qiang and Lin Yu along with Wu Yi followed his pointing finger and saw that this new batch of Skeleton Mutants had an even stranger appearance.
They resembled a group of slow-moving, clumsy pregnant women—Uterus! Within their swollen bellies, a new generation of bloodthirsty Skeleton Mutants was being nurtured.
Among the family of Skeleton Mutants, these were either the old, the weak, the sick, or those with child—but to humans, they were simply a group of unforgivable monsters.
Xiao Qiang squeezed out a single word through clenched teeth: "Kill."
Looking at their innocent and pitiful appearance, Lin Yu suddenly felt hesitant. "What if..."
"Listen to me, don't be merciful. They are monsters, not from our planet. As long as they exist, humanity could face extinction..."
Lin Yu was speechless, turning away unwilling to watch this group of old, weak, sick, and pregnant beings be burned alive—though they were Mutant Creatures, they were still living beings.
At this point, one might wonder where these Skeleton Mutants came from and what type of biological species they belonged to. I can reveal a little bit: Skeleton Mutants do not belong to the human species...
This was a truth that neither Xiao Qiang nor Professor R had anticipated.
But it was Lin Yu's fleeting hypothesis during his escape that held the real truth...
