A vehicle rolled along, carrying a person and a creature that resembled neither human nor ghost. The rolling wheels kicked up a cloud of gray dust, mingling with the overcast sky, creating an oppressive atmosphere that made Xiao Qiang feel quite irritable.
The road was rugged and could hardly be called a road at all. Bricks and rubble littered the ground, overgrown with weeds, presenting a desolate landscape. Exhausted, Xiao Qiang activated the autopilot and leaned back to rest.
As Xiao Qiang's mood soured, Little Skeleton dared not provoke him further. It kept its head down, playing with its ten bony fingers. Only when it heard soft snoring did it muster the courage to look up at him as he slept.
Matt had gone to great lengths to tame Little Skeleton. He provided rigorous training, imparting knowledge through various means. During this period of reinforcement, Little Skeleton changed its bloodthirsty eating habits; initially, its food contained a small amount of livestock blood. Accustomed to this diet like an opium addict, Little Skeleton found it intolerable when deprived of blood and refused to eat. In the dead of night, it would gnaw at its own arms and scratch at its wooden cage, emitting piercing cries. It fell into a coma for half a month due to severe blood deprivation.
Matt administered vitamin C nutrient solutions and various other nutrients like fat-soluble vitamin E and water-soluble vitamin B. He treated it like a human infant. However, after a month, Little Skeleton looked truly dreadful; it was nothing but bones—if not for its eyes rolling around, Matt might have considered abandoning it.
Eventually, it seemed to adapt to the sunlight and air on the Ground. The warmth from the sun not only comforted it but also boosted its immunity.
It began eating rice soup, porridge, and dairy products.
A deep father-son bond developed between it and Matt. When Xiao Qiang took it away from Matt, Little Skeleton surprisingly mimicked how he had embraced Lin Yu, hugging Matt tightly and giving him a kiss before reluctantly parting.
Slowly and quietly, it crawled over to Xiao Qiang's side, greedily eyeing the prominent carotid artery on his neck. Beneath its skin, its throat swallowed thick mucus—this was its first close observation of this seemingly fierce human.
The original greed erupted within the pulsating capillary—it suddenly stretched its neck, revealing two sharp fangs—when a hand abruptly seized its slender neck.
Squeak, squeak, squeak, it sounded like a monkey screeching, its eyes bulging with terror. Its limbs flailed wildly—if Xiao Qiang exerted even a little force, this creature's neck would snap. "Damn it, you'd better stay away from me." With a swift motion, Little Skeleton was kicked harshly to the back under the car. As Little Skeleton rolled away, it curled up and trembled. Instinctively, Xiao Qiang touched his neck where Little Skeleton had nearly bitten through his carotid artery, feeling a wave of fear wash over him; he resolved never to let it come near him again.
Settling into his seat, he rubbed his eyes and scanned the surroundings—this appeared to be a checkpoint with guards. The vehicle slowly approached, and he handed over the card prepared by Matt through the window.
Without a card, one could not enter the human testing zone. Anyone caught without one, or any wandering humans, would be imprisoned in a dark room until someone came to redeem them for their freedom.
Xiao Qiang had to pass through several such checkpoints before he could truly reach the Red Zone (Area A5). The card returned to his hand as the vehicle gradually entered a smoother road.
The car's automatic navigation system activated, and Xiao Qiang opened a can to begin eating. Behind him, Little Skeleton was already starving but dared not come closer for food. Like a pet pug lying on the seat, he looked at this constantly evolving creature resembling a bat and felt an indescribable disgust.
"I swear if you dare to have any improper thoughts about me again, I'll make sure to kill you and dump you in a cesspit."
Little Skeleton lowered its head again and again—afraid to meet his gaze. It felt there was a devil in his eyes, fearing that the devil would reach out and grab it to devour it.
The night was long and endless. Xiao Qiang remained vigilant, maintaining a half-asleep state. He could hear the chirping of insects around him. In the darkness, he could see Little Skeleton's green, glimmering beast-like eyes; every time he sensed it watching him, he would issue a warning. He either kicked the seat or threw a food canister to keep it at bay.
After days of tension and mutual distrust, Xiao Qiang felt physically and mentally exhausted; his mind was foggy, and he couldn't even remember how many days had passed since they set off.
The only thing that kept his spirits up was a simple topographic map given by Matt—
Zone A was nearby; the car's alarm emitted a red alert indicating nearby heat signatures that did not belong to humans. Xiao Qiang cautiously readied his weapon and activated the night driving system.
The vehicle moved slowly, approaching the final checkpoint—one that Xiao Qiang was particularly worried about. If Matt was right and the military had already fallen, then were the personnel stationed at this checkpoint now Abnormal Humanoids?
He activated the in-car system to look up basic information and physical characteristics of the Abnormal Humanoid. On the Crystal Monitor, a spinning figure appeared. As the image sharpened, the most prominent feature of the Abnormal Humanoid came into view: a pair of blood-red eyes—everything else was essentially human-like.
It seemed Matt's preparations were indeed useful. Xiao Qiang put on a pair of dark brown sunglasses and dragged Little Skeleton along beside him. The vehicle entered the checkpoint—he handed over a pass card—
As expected, when the checkpoint received his pass card, they did not allow passage. Then, a tall and imposing man emerged from the guardhouse, wielding a baton that he rhythmically struck against his palm. His body slightly bent, with blood-red eyes fixed intently on Xiao Qiang—
"Take off your sunglasses!" commanded the checkpoint Abnormal Humanoid, his other hand reaching back for a weapon—
Xiao Qiang tensed up, ready to strike at any moment—though at this point, it was best if no accidents occurred, especially since they had just entered the Red Zone. An incident could lead to greater trouble; he had no idea how many Abnormal Humanoids might be nearby, and even a minor mishap could escalate into something serious.
Suddenly, Little Skeleton poked its head out and grabbed hold of the Abnormal Humanoid's baton. The baton did not discharge electricity, so it posed no immediate threat to it. However, with this unexpected action, the Abnormal Humanoid abandoned its attempt to draw a weapon and instead nodded respectfully to Xiao Qiang, saying, "You may pass."
