Chapter 102: Serpent Woman
Due to the events that had transpired earlier, Xiao Qiang's vigilance heightened. He lay half-asleep with his elbow propped up on the pillow, yet he still couldn't settle down, feeling as though something was bound to happen.
Eventually, Li Uncle came in to inform him about the sudden arrival of two strangers. Although Xiao Qiang had a strong affinity for people, there were still doubts about the intentions of these newcomers.
Thus, Li Uncle would take on the role of night patrol before they left. He assured Xiao Qiang that the place was safe; since their second deployment here, no major incidents had occurred.
"Second deployment? When was the first?" Xiao Qiang was intrigued by Li Uncle's words and quickly sat up, eager to discuss the matter.
"The first was during the Nuclear War. The second was when Area A5 fell."
"And how many times has Feng and Yun been here?"
"This is their second time. Ronnie raised them both. Later, they migrated from the lower levels to Area A5, but a terrifying alien incident occurred."
"Aliens?"
"Yes, one night. Ronnie's idiot friends somehow dragged a fight into Area A5 with a trailer. They brought it to the police station, and it was said that there was an alien inside..." Li Uncle nodded affirmatively as he continued, "Yes, it was an alien. After that, humans turned against each other; they were bloodthirsty... it was horrifying..."
"Aliens? Does Feng know about this? Why hasn't she mentioned it?"
"Feng doesn't want to bring it up because so much happened that night. Yun's leg was bitten by a Bloodsucker. At that moment, she felt like she wanted to die; later, Yun kept having high fevers and there were no medicines to bring it down. Nothing at all..."
"And then?" Xiao Qiang hadn't expected to learn about Yun from Li Uncle and was eager to hear more details about the blood gene mutation.
"I can't stay; I need to check around. I'll come back later to continue our talk."
"Alright then! Be careful."
"It's nothing, this place is so familiar that I could walk it with my eyes closed."
Li Uncle left, and Xiao Qiang fell into deep thought. Aliens? What could a strange fight look like? As he pondered, drowsiness washed over him; his eyelids grew heavy, and his mind spun in a whirlpool of confusion until he finally drifted off to sleep.
His dreams were chaotic and disordered. At one moment, he heard Lin Yu whispering close to his ear, and the next, it seemed he heard cries. Then came a terrifying face—"Ah!" Xiao Qiang jolted awake from the nightmare. The image of that face was deeply etched in his mind.
Just as he sat up, Ronnie rushed in a panic, shouting, "Something's happened! Something's happened!"
Xiao Qiang's heart sank at the sound. He hurriedly got dressed and ran outside.
Everyone in the cave was awake, chattering noisily about something. With so many voices overlapping, Xiao Qiang couldn't make sense of any of it.
Seeing Feng and Yun there, he approached them and asked, "What happened?"
Feng's eyes were red as she swallowed hard. "Li Uncle is in trouble."
"He was just talking to me; how could that be?" Xiao Qiang quickly joined several others to check on Li Uncle, who had been laid on a tattered mat. His expression was one of sheer terror as if he had seen something horrifying before death; his face was pale, blood oozed from his seven orifices, and there was a distinct mark around his neck.
"This was found where Li Uncle had his incident," said a young man around Ronnie's age, bringing over a pile of soft material resembling snake skin.
Xiao Qiang reached out to take it; his fingers confirmed it was indeed snake skin. It felt slick and had invisible patterns, large enough to fit a person’s body. If this was a snake shedding its skin, then the size of this snake would be quite exaggerated!
Plum Blossom Rain stood nearby, seemingly frightened, keeping her distance and not daring to come closer.
Xiao Qiang spread the snake skin out one by one, shocking everyone present. This skin clearly resembled that of a human shedding its form… He cast a sharp glance at Plum Blossom Rain, who feigned disgust and turned away to whisper something to Ronnie.
"This is strange; we've never encountered anything like this here," Feng remarked curiously.
"If I'm not mistaken, this snake was shedding its skin when Li Uncle stumbled upon it. Fearing exposure, the snake must have killed the poor uncle," Plum Blossom Rain explained seriously.
Some nodded in agreement, while others questioned, "Where is that snake? Or is it mixed in among us?" This statement was frightening; if that snake truly could disguise itself as a human and blend in with them, it would be terrifying.
"Yun, what do you think?" Xiao Qiang handed over the initiative to Yun, hoping she might have foreseen everything happening here. Another reason was his desire to get closer to her and learn more about the details of Area A5.
Yun ignored Xiao Qiang, expressionless as she whispered to her sister Feng to push the wheelchair closer to Li Uncle. She then leaned in to examine his pupils—her every move drew the attention and focus of everyone present.
Xiao Qiang scanned the surroundings; Plum Blossom Rain and Ronnie had disappeared at some point. Doubts began to creep into his mind...
Finally, Yun stopped examining the pupils and turned to Xiao Qiang. Her gaze sharpened before she addressed the crowd, "I've always been worried about my sister. Last night, I slept too deeply... so I didn't foresee that Li Uncle would have an accident."
Feng urged anxiously, "Yun, just tell the truth! Wildfire is not an outsider..."
Yun coldly glared at Xiao Qiang and reprimanded her sister, "Did you forget what I told you?"
Feng fell silent with a sigh, not daring to speak further.
Seeing the suspicious behavior of the two sisters only deepened Xiao Qiang's doubts. It seemed Yun was wary of him.
At that moment, someone rushed in from outside, shouting that Ronnie had been bitten by something and called everyone to come see.
Just when one crisis seemed to settle, another arose. Xiao Qiang barely had time to move when Yun suddenly commanded, "Bind him."
"Hey, wait! Don't do this... I'm not trying to harm anyone." But no one paid attention to his protests. In a flurry of activity, they tied Xiao Qiang up tightly like a dumpling, rendering him immobile.
Not that he couldn't move; he simply didn't want to deepen Feng and Yun's misunderstanding of him. Otherwise, how could they possibly control a mutant with abilities?
Xiao Qiang found himself stripped of freedom, being watched over by a half-grown child.
The others went to check on Ronnie's condition.
Ronnie had severe burns on his face, resembling the aftermath of an acid attack, with red blisters forming in some areas.
"What happened to you?"
Ronnie struggled, trying to speak but unable to utter a single word.
"Give him a pen," Feng suddenly suggested. Suddenly, she felt a burning sensation on her face, intense pain coursing through her... her head began to spin, and she swayed unsteadily. Yun panicked and shouted, "Sister, you..."
Feng was temporarily supported and laid down on a hammock to rest.
With severely burned pupils, Ronnie could only rely on his senses to draw a portrait of a woman on the ground—Plum Blossom Rain!
Is Plum Blossom Rain the Serpent Woman? Yun glared coldly at Xiao Qiang, trembling as she spoke, "You terrifying mutant. This is all your fault. The Serpent Woman has already escaped. Both my sister's face and Ronnie's face were burned by the venom spat out by the Serpent Woman."
Xiao Qiang regretted it deeply; it was his own negligence that led to this. Upon hearing that Feng was in trouble, he hurriedly asked, "She...?" Internally cursing himself: Plum Blossom Rain is a mutant, and she's the Serpent Woman? Oh no! How foolish!
