As these people arrived at a tranquil depth, they came upon what appeared to be an ordinary cave entrance. However, once inside, they discovered a hidden world. Upon closer inspection, it was a spacious cavern filled with all sorts of wonders. There were stone tables, stone benches, and even stone stalactites. The bizarre stalactites resembled ivory in some places and looked like icicles in others; in short, they dazzled Xiao Qiang's eyes, who couldn't help but admire them endlessly.
Inside the cave, it felt as if a graceful and beautiful fairy was playing a guzheng, producing melodious sounds that echoed softly, enchanting everyone and leaving them reluctant to leave.
Xiao Wu Yi seemed to enjoy being alone with Xiao Qiang.
Noticing Xiao Qiang's fascination with the sound, he tiptoed and pointed to the stalactite above them, saying, "The sound comes from the water dripping above, creating an echo."
"Oh."
After receiving such warm hospitality from these strangers, Xiao Qiang felt he should do something in return to ease his mind. However, before taking action, he needed to rest and gather his strength.
Xiao Wu Yi was very interested in the letters and numbers on Xiao Qiang's wrist.
"Do you want it?"
Xiao Wu Yi's bright eyes were fixed on him, nodding eagerly.
Xiao Qiang picked up a pen from the table and held Xiao Wu Yi's wrist gently as he began to draw carefully. After a few minutes, a detailed watch appeared on his small wrist.
The watch had several buttons of various sizes. Xiao Wu Yi stared at it, and questions began to pour out. He kept asking what each button did.
"This one is the activation button; it can track a target. This one is for communication; you can talk to anyone you want. This one is the scanning button; it scans your surroundings to check for any dangers."
Xiao Wu Yi listened in astonishment, his curious eyes wide open and his mouth agape in surprise as he grinned foolishly with delight!
There were many things that needed rational reconsideration, and thinking required quietness. Reluctantly leaving, Xiao Wu Yi took a few steps but turned back to look, hoping that Xiao Qiang would suddenly call him back.
In the stillness, a chilling sensation crept in from all directions. He, caught in a half-sleep, vaguely felt that Lin Yu was right before him. In her wide, expressive eyes lay endless longing and deep, helpless affection.
She walked ahead while he chased after her. A bright red flower by the roadside caught his attention, its vivid color almost dripping with allure. He couldn't help but want to pick it for her. Crouching down, he reached out to pluck it, but just as his fingers were about to touch the petals, they mysteriously withered and fell apart.
Startled, he quickly withdrew his hand, rising slowly to look at Lin Yu, who had already walked far away. He shouted, "Yu..." at the same time Xiao Qiang stretched out his hand, trying to grab her.
Lin Yu turned slowly, her complex gaze lowering to her abdomen. Following her line of sight, Xiao Qiang gasped—there was a patch of deep red at her belly.
Seeing the blood-red stain made Xiao Qiang's heart ache painfully, a deep-seated pain that pierced through him. Desperate to reach her, he blinked, but in an instant, Lin Yu vanished, leaving only a sea of blood before him.
Had Lin Yu been engulfed by the blood? Xiao Qiang was drenched in sweat from panic when suddenly he kicked his legs—only to awaken and realize it had all been a dream. Wiping the cold sweat from his brow, he caught a glimpse of movement in the shadows a few feet away from him. With a swift motion, he threw a punch that narrowly missed its target; he pulled back just in time.
The shadow hiding in the dark was Xiao Wu Yi.
"What are you doing here?" Xiao Qiang demanded angrily. He disliked having someone spying on him while he slept.
Trembling with fear, Xiao Wu Yi stammered, "I heard you calling for someone and came to see."
"Alright then, let's go for a walk."
"Are you really going out?"
"Is there a problem?"
"Um."
"What problem?"
"This place has no way out; the only exit leads to the Subterranean Platform."
"That's impossible! I saw sunlight streaming down from the sky."
"You must be hallucinating. There is no sunlight here, only a sliver of sky. But that was destroyed long ago. Above the pond, everything is scorched earth and rubble—there's no one left."
"That's not true! You can't lie to me like that, kid."
"Uncle, I'm not lying. I can take you to see it, but we can't let them know because the Ground has radiation..."
Did I get it wrong? Or... Xiao Qiang fell into deep thought. People settled him here to protect him; what was Stratum?
"Alright, take me to see it."
"Okay." Xiao Wu Yi nodded understandingly, taking Xiao Qiang's hand in hers. Despite her young age, she carried an air of maturity as she led him through multiple dark and damp tunnels into a narrow path that could only accommodate one person at a time.
After walking for half an hour, the path gradually widened, and faint sounds of commotion echoed from somewhere. Xiao Wu Yi mentioned there was an echo wall here; it sounded close but was actually quite far away.
On the spacious road, two people could walk side by side. Xiao Qiang took the Glow Stick from Xiao Wu Yi's hand. The Glow Stick flickered with a bluish light, illuminating the eerie landscape of jagged rocks around them, making it look particularly terrifying—as if monstrous figures were poised to leap at them at any moment.
Xiao Wu Yi was very scared; she dared not peek around and could only cling tightly to Xiao Qiang, running alongside him just to keep up.
The Subterranean Platform was familiar to Xiao Qiang as his only space for survival. It was always dimly lit, with dark streets where he couldn't make out the faces of passersby. Rich people, poor folks, and thugs all existed on the same level here.
There were no skyscrapers, no high-tech luxuries, and certainly no vibrant nightlife. Aside from the occasional prostitutes in dark corners trying to entice men, the environment here was worlds apart from a bustling metropolis.
Xiao Qiang was curious about Xiao Wu Yi's family situation.
"I don't have parents."
"…an orphan…" The feeling was all too familiar, Xiao Qiang whispered to himself.
"My parents died in a car accident. I was born after that."
"What do you mean?"
"A nuclear war broke out, and my parents were trying to escape. Their motorcycle collided with a car. The car ran over my parents, my dad died, my mom died, and I was born."
"…" Xiao Qiang was astonished and couldn't help but hug Xiao Wu Yi tightly. "What happened next?"
"A bald man adopted me, but he was really scary. I ran away and didn't dare to go back."
"Bald? What was so scary about him?" Xiao Qiang wondered, associating the bald man with Professor R. However, he still couldn't remember how Xiao Wu Yi was connected to him. Perhaps it was only in specific times and environments that one would recall…
Xiao Wu Yi spoke like a little adult, continuing his story in an orderly manner: "He injected a green liquid into a little mouse, and the mouse squeaked a few times before it died. I was afraid he would treat me like a mouse and inject me with that liquid too, so one night when he got drunk, I decisively ran away."
