The indoor passage echoed with the sharp sounds of gunfire, a constant "tap-tap-tap" reverberating through the air. The atmosphere was thick with smoke, as a squad of soldiers clad in camouflage uniforms played a game reminiscent of "eagles catching chicks," guided by Wu Yi.
The basement was equally quiet. Xiao Qiang pulled out a simple blueprint given to him by Gui Ye. The entire layout of the basement was sketched out in rough lines, and thanks to his exceptional memory, every place he had traversed left a deep impression on him.
He took out his portable laser tracker pen and marked the locations he had previously visited. Time was of the essence; every second counted.
Wu Yi seemed capable of handling those camouflaged foes for a short while, but who knew how long that would last? After confirming his intended destination, Xiao Qiang remained cautious. He retrieved a large number of empty disposable syringes from the room he had just entered, preparing for any unforeseen circumstances.
If Gui Ye was untrustworthy, how reliable could this blueprint be? How could he ascertain its authenticity without testing it? Xiao Qiang adjusted his mask, ready for potential gas contamination.
The environment in the basement was far from that of the ground above. It was dark and damp, with limited space and poor air quality. Additionally, due to previous gas contamination, the toxic fumes lingering in the air could not be completely eliminated, necessitating extra caution.
From the lower end of the basement, faint sounds from above could be heard, indicating that there were flaws in its sealing. As he walked down a narrow passageway, it felt like stepping into a secluded secret dungeon. Small rooms separated by aluminum alloy walls came into view.
He noticed that each room had either a keypad lock or a fingerprint scanner; brute force would not suffice to open them. After several attempts to push them open without success, he reluctantly moved on.
Upon exiting the narrow corridor, Xiao Qiang found himself in a more spacious hallway. On either side were rooms resembling offices or small meeting spaces, though none bore any signs or labels at their entrances.
These seemingly ordinary rooms were unlikely to attract attention; many might overlook them entirely. However, Xiao Qiang was meticulous in his approach and refused to ignore even the slightest hint of suspicion.
The doors were unlocked, giving him the impression that someone had hurriedly left without closing them properly. As he reached this point, he could no longer hear the gunfire or footsteps from above.
While he felt an underlying concern for Wu Yi, he remained vigilant. Entering one of the rooms, Xiao Qiang sensed he had come to the right place. The space was approximately 30 square meters and devoid of furnishings except for two towering glass compartments standing against the right wall.
Inside these transparent enclosures lay two seemingly sleeping bioengineered humans. Just as Xiao Wu Yi had described, their vertical arms were connected to heavy AK108 rotary rocket launchers.
This is the result of Kabo Corporation's successful experiments with corpses. They needed a large number of bodies to create these two Bioengineered Humans, capable of replacing humans in warfare.
There was a button on the fiberglass door, but Xiao Qiang didn’t know the password. In a moment of desperation, he couldn’t open the grid door. Just then, he heard faint footsteps outside... Who could it be? He was the only one who had entered the basement. Could it be someone else? He dared not be careless and held his dagger, scanning the surroundings. Damn! There was nowhere to hide in the room except for the two grid structures! Xiao Qiang finally directed his gaze toward the space behind the door...
A tall, thin man with a gaunt face and shifty eyes entered. Xiao Qiang caught a glimpse of him through the crack in the door, seeing him flustered as he rushed to the entrance, suddenly stopping in his tracks, breathing heavily and nervously glancing behind him.
The man’s eyes darted around the empty corridor, his heart racing as if it might leap out of his chest. He let out a quiet sigh of relief and turned back to look inside the room, suddenly pausing slightly as he tried to recall whether he had forgotten to close the door when he left.
He slapped his forehead as if remembering that he had heard some noise earlier, which had prompted him to rush out and forget to close the door. With this thought, he felt justified and stepped into the room, preparing to continue with his decoding process.
Suddenly, a figure leaped out from behind the door with lightning speed—a bright flash of white light shot straight for the man's neck. The cold blade, laced with murderous intent, pressed against his carotid artery; this was life-threatening.
Xiao Qiang's sudden attack startled the man so much that he trembled all over, nearly losing control of himself. Not daring to move, he struggled to calm down and exclaimed in surprise, “Who... are you?”
“A warrior,” Xiao Qiang replied steadily, his extraordinary aura intimidating the man who was about to futilely struggle.
The man widened his eyes and slyly blinked at Xiao Qiang’s attire. With an arrogant tone and firm demeanor, he said, “You’re not from Team A; who exactly are you?”
“Do you wish I were from a military unit?” Xiao Qiang pressed his knee hard against the man's abdomen. The man let out a strange cry as his arrogance diminished. He hurriedly lowered his head, not daring to make any sudden movements.
“What do you want?”
“Open the grid.”
“I don’t have the password.”
Xiao Qiang pushed the dagger deeper, and blood instantly rolled out from the wound. "Do as you wish; I don't have the patience to waste time with you."
"You can't let them out..."
"Then why are you here?"
"I was entrusted to destroy them."
"You're lying. These are the fruits of your experiments; how could you easily destroy them?" Xiao Qiang saw through the man's deception and pressed harder with his fingers.
The man winced in pain, his face contorting as he involuntarily let out a low moan. "Ah... I... will tell you... the code is 01684."
Xiao Qiang forced the man to the side of a grid door, where two sets of colorful buttons were located. Staring at the buttons, he hesitated and glared at the dejected man, barking, "Open the grid door honestly, no tricks, or your head will be rolling."
Feigning fear, the man nodded submissively and slowly extended his finger to press one of the button sets. After a series of faint, rhythmic beeping sounds, Xiao Qiang suddenly sensed something was off. As soon as he pressed the button, a cloud of yellow smoke billowed from the top of the grid door, which then swung open...
"Damn it!" he cursed, hurriedly pulling down his mask. Just as he intended to stab the man, it was too late. The man took advantage of Xiao Qiang's momentary distraction and slipped away, retreating quickly. His malicious gaze and ferocious expression were fixed on the grid door where the Bioengineered Humans had already awakened.
