The evolution process of the Abomination begins with the Living Dead, which can be classified into high-level and low-level categories. The high-level ones evolve and mutate into the Fallen One, while the low-level Living Dead, by adapting to their surroundings and developing immunity, manage to survive and eventually transform into vampires.
This is the simplest evolutionary model, but what are the pathways for their evolution? Xiao Qiang was puzzled. However, he understood that the Fallen One's purpose in abducting Little Pick-Up was not merely to feed but to lure him in.
So, Little Pick-Up was temporarily out of danger. What did the Fallen One want? Xiao Qiang suddenly felt that the Fallen One's presence here was not just a coincidence; there was a plan and a conspiracy behind it.
Yet no matter how hard he tried to interrogate the captured Fallen One, even prying open its half-closed mouth yielded no useful information.
Chixia's condition was deteriorating; her wounds were festering, her face ashen, and her neck and entire body were beginning to stiffen. This was a sign of the virus invading her body, consuming her capillaries and organs, marking her imminent transformation into a Living Dead.
Xiao Qiang tied up the Fallen One with a rope, forcing it to lead him in search of Jianjian while also supporting Chixia.
The Fallen One looked down on those bitten by the Living Dead. Despite having evolved from them, it regarded the Living Dead as filthy, low-level creatures.
It despised Chixia and seemed lethargic. Its movements grew slow and clumsy; Xiao Qiang could tell at a glance that this was a sign of weakness—it needed blood.
Here, apart from Chixia, he was still human; he couldn't just let it feed on his blood! Faced with two burdens, Xiao Qiang felt utterly miserable.
Chixia's condition was dire; her skin had turned dull, with dark veins protruding like worms. Time was of the essence—if he didn't act soon, she would become a Living Dead ready to attack him.
Suddenly, the Fallen One erupted into maniacal laughter. "Hahaha! A mutant! Just wait until she bites you! That feeling of being bitten is quite exhilarating. Besides, she's your woman; what's the big deal about a bite?" The Fallen One's glee made Xiao Qiang want to smash its head in and extract its Brain Essence to feed to dogs.
Brain Essence? A sudden thought struck him. He remembered that early-stage Living Dead needed to consume Brain Essence—devouring it to steal human intelligence—could this lead to evolving into a Fallen One? He stared intently at the Fallen One, his gaze deep and unfathomable.
The Fallen One felt uneasy under his stare and feared his intense gaze. It struggled and shouted, "Hey! Don't get any ideas! My flesh isn't tasty!"
Xiao Qiang sneered and leaned closer to the Fallen One, his eyes sharp and focused like an invisible blade piercing deep into its heart. "If she eats your Brain Essence, will she become one of you?"
Hearing Xiao Qiang's words, the Fallen One panicked. His body trembled, and the half-healed gash on his mouth twisted grotesquely due to his tension. A flash of fear crossed his eyes as he hurriedly shouted, "Damn it, don't mess around."
"It seems to be true. Why don't you contribute your Brain Essence?" Xiao Qiang said with a wicked smile, swiftly drawing his dagger and advancing toward the Fallen One.
"They... they want to lure you in and eliminate you. They want to drain your blood to strengthen their own power."
Xiao Qiang paused, realizing: this was it. Although the Fallen One was wary of his abilities, they intended to tempt him into a trap, where he would be besieged by numerous Fallen Ones... The consequences were too dire to contemplate. He fixed his gaze on the Fallen One and asked, "Who sent you?"
The Fallen One's mouth twitched as half of his face trembled uncontrollably. "Those who want your life."
Those who want my life? Who? Professor R? Or someone else? That can't be! There was no... wind! Yes, it must be Professor R. Does he want my life? But then again, that seemed impossible.
Professor R only wanted the Chain around my neck; he wouldn't go that far! So who could it be? While Xiao Qiang was lost in thought, Chixia gasped for breath, her eyes filled with despair as she stared at him...
"You should just deal with her! Being bitten isn't fun," the Fallen One urged Xiao Qiang to kill Chixia, fearing that he might actually pull out his Brain Essence for her.
Xiao Qiang gazed at Chixia, and a strange thought suddenly surfaced in his mind. Without hesitation, he walked toward her and drew out his dagger... His eyes locked onto hers, filled with pain, encouragement, comfort, and resoluteness all at once. The dagger pierced her forehead with a soft thud! He couldn't sever her head; he had to keep it intact to carry out the idea that had emerged in his mind.
Blood oozed from the tip of the blade—dark blood that carried a strange stench. Without delay, Xiao Qiang pressed harder; the dagger plunged deeper... Reality was so cruel that he couldn't bear to look at Chixia's once-clear and spirited eyes as he drove the dagger in; he turned his head away.
"Do you love her?" The Fallen One asked curiously as he felt relieved upon seeing Chixia's lifeless body.
Xiao Qiang's face darkened as he pulled the dagger from Chixia's forehead. Ignoring the Fallen One's question, a fierce killing intent gathered in his narrowed eyes, like a proud dragon whose dignity had been provoked—ready to kill anyone in sight.
"What do you want?" At that moment, the Fallen One truly realized that the danger was far from over. The greatest threat wasn't the Living Dead he had just executed but this mutant standing before him.
He was in despair, lost in thought, trying to break free from the terrifying situation before him. "I have already confessed, what more do you want?"
"Who are they?" Xiao Qiang stepped onto the rock beside the Fallen One, the glint of his dagger trembling against the lifeless face of the Fallen One.
"They... they are humans..."
Humans colluding with the Fallen One? This was beyond Xiao Qiang's expectations. "Who?" he suddenly intensified his tone, raging in frustration.
"A very strange woman, she... is the Serpent Woman."
"The Serpent Woman?" Xiao Qiang smacked his forehead, damn it, how did he not think of her?
"It was the Serpent Woman who wanted your life, to take revenge for your ungratefulness towards her," the Fallen One said, relieved to have successfully diverted his attention and continued.
"Love? What does she know about love? Nonsense." Without hesitation, Xiao Qiang cursed loudly, disregarding what the Fallen One thought. In a flash, a bright white light gleamed as the dagger plunged in, slicing through his throat.
The Fallen One's blood-red eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at him. His body convulsed violently; he could no longer speak. The damaged throat emitted a rasping sound, followed by heavy gasps like a bellows. He raised a finger pointing at Xiao Qiang, but with a kick of his legs and a tilt of his head, he breathed his last.
