Xiao Qiang had been troubled by one thing: why Matt had sent him to 2038 to save Wu Yi. Yet, it always seemed like he was going in the opposite direction, failing to accomplish his mission. After encountering the young Lin Yu, he faced the black-clad figures again, who took her away without permission. What did this mean?
His fingers instinctively brushed against the Chain around his neck as his gaze swept over the seemingly ordinary yet eerie cave. A sense of inexplicable sadness washed over him. If something were to happen to him here, would Lin Yu from the future know? This was his current state of mind.
As for the one being coerced, what kind of mindset did the Eagle City Lord have?
Upon entering the cave, the Eagle City Lord suddenly caught sight of a woman pointing a gun at him, her eyes not resembling those of a human. Was she the Fallen One? A wave of dread washed over him, and he unconsciously moved closer to Xiao Qiang.
But then he thought about it; they were in cahoots. Who was he? Doubts arose, and retreating was no longer an option. Chixia followed closely behind, trapping him in between and rendering him immobile.
Xiao Qiang seemed to sense someone behind him panicking and turned back to signal Chixia not to rush too much. In this deep cave, even if he had twenty-four lives, there was no way the city lord could escape.
“How did you know about this place?”
Xiao Qiang's sudden question startled the city lord. He paused for a moment before forcing a smile and replied, “To be honest, this is my first time in this cave. It was Nalan who told me there was a mysterious cave here, and that it contained treasures.”
“How did you know that the lid below leads to the cave entrance?”
Under Xiao Qiang's pressing inquiry, the city lord slowly pulled out a Blueprint from his pocket. This was what he had just searched from Nalan. The Blueprint was small, two-thirds of it stained red with blood; it was futile to look at it since the blood obscured any markings.
Xiao Qiang held it under the faint light of his flashlight, deliberately showing it to the Eagle City Lord. Until he understood the other party's psychological state, he couldn't casually reveal his true identity.
As they focused on the Blueprint, a long and sharp scream echoed from the darkness.
“Vampire!” The city lord whispered, his terrified gaze darting around. In this peculiar environment, even the slightest disturbance could be alarming.
Xiao Qiang and Chixia immediately went on high alert. Before they could grab their Glow Sticks from their bags for emergency use, a heavy sound came from behind them as something slammed hard against the ground.
Xiao Qiang turned sharply and saw a massive creature—a vampire as large as a polar bear—revealing its fangs with glistening saliva dripping from them.
He instructed Chixia to protect the city lord while he faced this seemingly evolved vampire alone.
Chixia sprinted forward, protecting the lord.
As the vampire saw the fleeing figure, it let out a frenzied scream and chased after them. The intense pursuit made the cave tremble, shrouded in mist and dust. It felt as if the entire cave was about to collapse.
Chixia pushed the lord toward a side tunnel and rolled forward. She drew the attention of the roaring vampire that was hot on their heels. In an instant, the once quiet and eerie cave was filled with a terrifying aura of death.
Rolling to the side, Chixia narrowly avoided the vampire that lunged at her with its mouth wide open, aiming to bite her...
This vampire was twice the size of the one they had seen earlier on the Shipyard deck. If Chixia were caught by it, the consequences would be dire.
Xiao Qiang was also running wildly, brandishing a dagger as he joined the fray against the vampire from a parallel tunnel in the same direction.
With another person joining the fight, the towering vampire seemed unfazed. Instead, it propelled itself forward with powerful legs, lunging at them. Xiao Qiang crouched down, stepped forward, and executed a graceful reversal... The dagger sliced through the air at lightning speed, piercing through the clumsy leap of the vampire's belly.
The massive vampire leaped forward with incredible speed, almost crashing into Chixia—yet at the last moment, it fell limp just inches away.
The lord, pale with fright, cautiously emerged from his hiding place after a long moment of hesitation.
If one vampire appeared in the cave, there would surely be a second and third—perhaps even more... It was normal for vampires to inhabit caves; if there weren't any, that would truly be strange.
This confirmed Xiao Qiang's earlier instinct that he was right.
Chixia seemed to be examining something. She deliberately approached the corpse of the vampire and casually reached out to touch its damp-looking skin. Then she brought her hand to her face for a closer inspection. Upon closer look, she noticed something amiss.
The dead vampire was soaked all over, as if it had just emerged from bathing in river water. However, what covered its body wasn't water or sweat; it was a sticky substance that left residue on her fingers.
"Did you find anything unusual?" Xiao Qiang asked as he approached Chixia, casually glancing at the cowering lord nearby.
Chixia brought her hand to her nose and sniffed it. Her expression changed slightly as she said, "Strange... it smells somewhat like amniotic fluid after a fetus exits the uterus."
Xiao Qiang didn't pay much attention to what Chixia was saying; instead, he reacted strongly to her actions. She was becoming increasingly close to human reasoning and intelligence, rising in levels of awareness.
Chixia caught a glimpse of a complex emotion in the other person's eyes, and her heart raced for a moment. She propped herself up and opened her mouth, just about to voice her doubts.
From their right side, a low, piercing scream echoed.
The city lord immediately grew tense and fearful, anxiously searching for a place to hide.
Xiao Qiang and Chixia hurried a few steps forward, seeking the source of the scream. They arrived at an open area as large as a small plaza. Beneath their feet was flat ground, while layers of mud and sand formed pyramid-like steps around them.
The source of the high-pitched scream was a vampire perched above them on the highest step. It was a robust male vampire, its small eyes hidden within the creases of its skin yet filled with murderous intent as it stared down at the two seemingly weak humans below.
The three of them—two humans and one vampire—faced each other in silence. The vampire marked its hunting territory, saliva dripping thickly from its mouth as it fixated on them from its elevated position.
One was high above, ready to pounce at any moment. The vampire held the advantage due to its height.
Below, they looked up, desperately trying to figure out how to deal with this formidable creature.
In the vampire's eyes, they were clearly like caged birds, unable to escape its designated hunting ground.
