Han Ming and Nair followed the fragmented clues left by Xiao Qiang in search of Professor R's private lab.
Fang Shanshan and Xiao Qiang went to the police station. Unfortunately, Lao Zhonghuan was not on duty today.
Lao Zhonghuan was at the bar! After a drink, he became quite talkative. Alone, he mumbled on, venting some tedious complaints that bored those around him. He shouted to the busy robot at the counter, "Another drink!"
The busy NS! Old Version Robot No. 2 brought over a drink. "Sir, your refill." He handed over some money.
The robot accepted it. "Thanks."
"Even robots are trying to be trendy?" Zhong Xuan squinted through his drunken haze, looking down on what was clearly a domestic product, yet it insisted on speaking in English.
Fang Shanshan and Xiao Qiang approached him from either side while he continued to mumble. In his drunken stupor, Zhong Xuan sensed he was being flanked and hurriedly reached for his gun!
Xiao Qiang grabbed his arm. "Hey, drunkard, we need to talk to you."
Lao Zhonghuan thought it was just the right time; in a few minutes, J's body would be untraceable.
"What happened?"
"Dissolved."
"A powerful solution sprayed on the corpse; within minutes, it turns into a puddle of blood." He stumbled and nearly fell as he squeezed into Fang Shanshan's car, reeking of alcohol.
Drunken clarity struck; the mention of the solution that dissolved bodies was indeed unsettling.
“(⊙o⊙)…” Xiao Qiang felt a surge in his throat; this was indeed the work of Professor R. A fleeting thought crossed his mind, and he suddenly recalled Area A5. Wasn't Clone Wenkai the one who dissolved himself in flames? It seemed that by 2040, R had developed a specialized method for dissolving bodies to replace the outdated practice of cremation.
Lao Zhonghuan took them to see J's vehicle and the body in the freezer. He shared an unexpected piece of news with them: Xiao Mei's body was not there. The vehicle, which had been confirmed as not malfunctioning during the last inspection, had flipped into the river and was already sent to a recycling station to be scrapped.
Neither the vehicle nor Xiao Mei could be examined again. Xiao Qiang was specifically looking for Xiao Mei, and in surprise, he asked, “Why isn’t she here?”
“Someone came to take Xiao Mei away that day.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know who it was, but they provided a signature certification from Kabo Corporation and Choke.”
“What did they take the little girl’s body for?” Xiao Qiang felt that things were gradually becoming clearer, and there was only one answer: “That means Xiao Mei doesn’t exist at all; she is a robot.”
Fang Shanshan suddenly understood and quietly gave Xiao Qiang a thumbs up, saying, “Indeed, Xiao Mei is not human; she is a product of Kabo Corporation.”
“She’s not a product of Kabo Corporation; she must be a child-sized robot designed by J on his own. When J designed the Newborn NS! Robot No. 3, he simultaneously created another type of robot that contradicted the Three Laws of NS!3.” Xiao Qiang rested his chin on his hand, looking cool as he pondered. Fang Shanshan couldn’t help but admire him several times.
Noticing someone watching him intently, Xiao Qiang smirked slightly and teased, “Beautiful Fang, don’t be infatuated with me; I’m just a legend.”
“Cut it out; you’re so full of yourself,” Fang Shanshan scoffed, turning her gaze elsewhere.
Zhong Xuan came to inform them that they could go see the body. They saw that J's body was covered with a thin layer of frost. After being prepared by the funeral home, his face seemed to carry a mysterious smile.
Zhong Xuan went to the washroom to splash cold water on his face, submerging his head in the water to cool off due to his drunkenness and the boiling blood in his capillaries. Once he was ready, the three of them prepared to head to Kabo Corporation.
Fang Shanshan went to demand an explanation from Kabo Corporation due to numerous user complaints about the Newborn NS3 robots violating the Three Laws. Zhong Xuan was looking into the incident where users violently disabled the Newborn NS3 robots.
Xiao Qiang had become Fang Shanshan's bodyguard and part-time assistant.
On their way, they discussed a topic that had not concluded the previous night.
Han Ming said, "The holographic projector is a program that can be pre-recorded to answer questions. It makes people think it's intelligent, but the program was set up before J's incident, with the timing configured for after the event."
"Did J know something was going to happen? Maybe he anticipated someone would go to his residence instead of me?" Xiao Qiang was quite interested in this topic, as he heard Zhong Xuan snoring loudly beside him. Without turning around, he could tell Zhong Xuan's sleeping posture was less than dignified.
"I can't understand what his reasoning was," Fang Shanshan remarked, puzzled.
"You guys weren't just talking about this last night, were you?" Xiao Qiang asked knowingly.
"Do you really want to know what we did last night?" Fang Shanshan shot him a sidelong glance, her tone teasing.
"Stop right there; I might have to accuse you of enticing a minor," Xiao Qiang replied with a humorous smile before adopting a serious demeanor. "Last night, Nair was spying on me."
Fang Shanshan looked surprised and then responded skeptically, "You have delusions of persecution and bias against all robots. Nair wouldn't harm you; don't feel pressured."
"I'm telling the truth."
"When have you ever told the truth?" Fang Shanshan shook her head, puzzled. "Wait! Zhong Xuan has gone quiet?"
Zhong Xuan wiped the drool from the corner of his mouth and awkwardly sat up straight. "Hey, hey, I'm awake. I was listening to you guys talk."
Choke was quite surprised by Xiao Qiang's reappearance. In front of Zhong Xuan and Fang Shanshan Lawyer, he couldn't question him directly. After some polite exchanges, they got down to business.
He rejected Fang Shanshan's theory that the robots were evolving automatically. After a lengthy debate, Zhong Xuan mentioned that a user had witnessed a robot performing self-repair, which was later violently dismantled.
Choke stated, "Regarding this matter, we will have personnel from the insurance company investigate. If any illegal activities are discovered, we will ensure severe punishment." His words echoed Han Ming's earlier thoughts that another mechanic had tampered with the NS!3 robots' Bionic Core and Three Laws, leading to the abnormal behavior of certain robots.
Fang Shanshan said, "To clarify the individual issues with the NS!3 robots, I would like to visit Vice President J's workplace while he was alive."
"Are you suspecting that J might have had the motive to create something contrary to the Three Laws?"
"Not exactly; I just want to see if there are any usable data or materials from his workplace that could help clarify these anomalies."
On the surface, Choke still maintained an air of politeness, but it was evident from his fervent arguments that he was struggling to contain his frustration.
"Fine, you can investigate. If you find nothing wrong, then stop here. Do not raise any further doubts about the NS!3 robots. I hope this is the last time I see you."
"Thank you," Fang Shanshan replied calmly. Her composure completely caught Xiao Qiang off guard. He recalled how helpless she had seemed in that dark room, evoking sympathy... Thinking of that dark room reminded him of Plum Blossom Rain.
"You're welcome. I will arrange for someone to host your visit," Choke said, embodying the demeanor of Kabo Giant. Even though he was seething inside, he still managed to maintain a nonchalant attitude.
