Zhong Xuan continued negotiations with the sales department of Kabo Corporation regarding whether to replace the user’s old NS2 robot with the Newborn NS3 model.
Xiao Qiang and Fang Shanshan, guided by the staff, met the receptionist, Fei Ren.
“Hi, nice to meet you.” It was evident that he was in high spirits, thriving at Kabo Corporation, his demeanor energetic and his smile broad.
“Hello.” Xiao Qiang and Fang Shanshan extended their hands and shook hands with Fei Ren.
Seeing Xiao Qiang, Fei Ren was so pleased that he almost lost his composure. After taking a few steps, he suddenly stopped and whispered excitedly about his promotion. What surprised him even more was that on his first day in the new position, he was receiving them.
Xiao Qiang was puzzled; what exactly was this guy grateful for? He chuckled inwardly and casually asked, “How much do you know about Dr. J?”
“I shouldn’t pry into high-level personnel changes. However, I did reread Choke’s analysis of his psychological profile. J is actually a core figure at Kabo Corporation. He focuses on developing the NS3 robot, aiming for a daily production of 1,000 units. According to his estimates and future plans, roughly one in every five people will own a robot.”
Xiao Qiang and Fang Shanshan exchanged glances, their eyes communicating silently: this aligned with Han Ming’s statement; it seemed plausible.
Fei Ren continued to boast about his knowledge as if he understood J better than anyone else: “He lives a reclusive life and rarely interacts with others for the sake of the robots. He doesn’t even have many friends he connects with on a personal level.”
Xiao Qiang agreed, “It seems that although J is successful in his career, he is lonely inside.” At this point, he recalled a detail from J’s home; he had once seen a poignant remark in an activity notebook: robots possess a kind of subconscious similar to humans. Why do they whisper? It was an inexplicable phenomenon that defied scientific logic.
They entered the elevator; Dr. J’s office was on the 34th floor. The sliding elevator ascended along the exterior wall, which was made of towering three-dimensional alloy panels that gleamed with dazzling metallic luster under the sunlight.
At the junction between two walls stood a massive robot model, gazing down at the skyscrapers below.
Fei Ren seemed overly enthusiastic or perhaps genuinely believed that Xiao Qiang had spoken well of him in front of Choke, leading to his rapid promotion. He rambled on about various advantages of Kabo Corporation.
Xiao Qiang and Fang Shanshan had their own concerns and merely nodded along without saying much.
As they exited the elevator, numerous staff members were bustling about.
Xiao Qiang tentatively asked Fei Ren, “Kabo Corporation claims J committed suicide; do you think he had suicidal tendencies?”
“Well, that’s quite evident,” Fei Ren answered evasively.
“I’m asking about your own feelings?”
"Clearly, in our company, at least among the employees I know, judgments can be prone to error."
"You also think he couldn't have committed suicide?" Fang Shanshan interjected.
"I can't make any definitive conclusions, sorry." Fei Ren paused, his gaze shifting to a corner where a spherical object caught the attention of Xiao Qiang and Fang Shanshan.
"What is that?" Fang Shanshan asked, intrigued. This was her first time seeing everything inside Kabo Corporation. Everything felt novel and even more magnificent than she had imagined.
Xiao Qiang looked down from the railing; the people below resembled ants, moving about and appearing so small.
Fei Ren did not immediately respond to Fang Shanshan's question. Instead, he straightened up and gestured towards the Alloy Gate they were about to enter. "This is the Virtual Intersection Motion Intelligence Monitoring."
Fang Shanshan seemed puzzled. "What does the monitor connect to?"
Fei Ren patiently explained, "The cameras are on sensors, and they are connected to Cation Operation."
"Is that what you just mentioned? The brain of your Kabo Corporation? Rock?" Xiao Qiang exclaimed. "Is the thermostat not working anymore? You rely solely on this to control the entire building? What about J? Does he have surveillance installed at home too?"
"Uh, I'm not sure about that... but as long as it's not a blind spot, everything is under Rock's surveillance 24/7."
"Alright." Xiao Qiang nodded as they entered J's office.
He casually glanced around J's office and said, "I heard he has a daughter. I wonder if you've met her?"
"He treats the robots he designs as his children; I haven't heard anything about him having a daughter," Fei Ren replied, clearly lying. As he spoke, he deliberately avoided Xiao Qiang's gaze and looked at the unfinished robot models hanging in mid-air.
Once inside, Fang Shanshan meticulously examined her surroundings but found nothing. Disappointed, she turned back to Xiao Qiang, raising an eyebrow and shaking her head to indicate that finding a breakthrough here seemed unlikely.
Unwilling to give up, Xiao Qiang signaled for Fang Shanshan to lead Fei Ren's thoughts elsewhere; he wanted to search this place thoroughly.
Understanding his cue, Fang Shanshan suddenly clutched her chest and pretended to feel dizzy.
Seeing this, Fei Ren hurriedly asked with concern, "Fang Lawyer, are you feeling unwell?"
"A bit," Fang Shanshan replied with a pained expression and a bitter smile. "Could you help me over there to sit down? Taking a breather might help."
"Alright." Fei Ren hesitated for a moment, gazing at Xiao Qiang. The latter quickly interjected, "How about I take a look instead of Fang Shanshan Lawyer?"
"That works."
Fang Shanshan winked subtly and said, "Sorry, but it looks like you'll have to bear the burden."
He focused intently on the various hanging robot models; the room was small and easily surveyed. A large iron box filled with metal tools occupied a third of the space.
Xiao Qiang casually walked up to the iron box and picked up a metal block from inside, swinging it down. Suddenly, a force erupted from the box, and a robot leaped out, pushing him aside as it attempted to escape.
Fei Ren seemed uneasy about leaving Xiao Qiang alone in J's Office; Fang Shanshan's charm had no effect on him. Just as the robot burst out of the box, he happened to be standing at the doorway.
Seeing Xiao Qiang holding a metal rod, he quickly intervened, saying, "You can't be violent with the robot; it won't harm you."
The robot that emerged from the box appeared almost sentient, its eyes moving as it attentively observed the conversation between Xiao Qiang and Fei Ren. At the same time, Fang Shanshan, alerted by the commotion, appeared at the door. The three of them faced the robot together, and the atmosphere grew tense.
Xiao Qiang stared at the robot, feeling an inexplicable familiarity. For some reason, he associated this robot with the one that had saved him in the river.
