Early Morning The sharp sound of the wake-up whistle echoed throughout the Vanguard Joint Defense Force Campsite Fifth District. The members of N Team, aching all over, scrambled to get up, ignoring the bruises on their faces. They cast a fearful glance at Xiao Qiang, who had already sat up.
Liu Yi covered his swollen cheek and said to him eagerly, "This is morning training. If you're late, you'll be punished."
Xiao Qiang yawned and waved his hand dismissively, not understanding why they had to get up so early. With sleep still in his eyes, he wanted nothing more than to go back to sleep.
The other members of N Team hurriedly dressed, putting on pants and shoes. When they turned around and saw Xiao Qiang lying back down, they were shocked but dared not provoke him.
Liu Yi cautiously approached Xiao Qiang, forcing a laugh as he said, "Come on, buddy, get up! It's an emergency assembly. We can't afford any mistakes."
"Is there an enemy situation?" Xiao Qiang sat up again, squinting at Liu Yi's round face that seemed to have gained weight overnight. He muttered, "What mistakes? What exactly is going on here?"
"This is a military camp. Emergency assemblies are both painful and exhilarating."
"Ah," Xiao Qiang replied, confused. But seeing that they were all dressed in just three minutes made him realize, "That was fast."
"Absolutely," Liu Yi nodded.
"Alright then, I can't afford to delay any longer. I'm getting up now." As he spoke, Xiao Qiang quickly got dressed while Liu Yi helped him find his military cap that had rolled off the bed.
Then the members of N Team rushed outside in a frenzy, fearing they would be punished for being late.
The sky was dark and the open area was crowded with people—soldiers from various units lined up in rows and teams reporting in.
Having gone through training before, Xiao Qiang was familiar with it but had never experienced such strictness—there wasn't even time to catch a breath.
In the morning mist, L Captain had yet to see the disheveled appearance of the N Team members. Just as he was about to call for a break when the fog cleared, he suddenly noticed Liu Yi acting shifty, constantly covering half of his face with one hand.
Approaching Liu Yi, L Captain scanned the other team members and noticed varying degrees of injuries on their faces. His gaze landed on the troublemaker among them—the infamous Wildfire. The answer seemed to reveal itself at that moment.
After a loud shout of "Attention!" came the synchronized sound of boots hitting the ground. "At ease," he said sharply as he scanned the members of N Team, standing with his hands behind his back before stopping in front of Xiao Qiang. "Who can tell me what happened last night?"
The members of N Team lowered their heads one by one, staring at their toes in silence.
"You all have a flower on your toes," he said with increasing intensity. Raising his voice further, he added, "Confess and you will be treated leniently; resist and you will face severe consequences. If you don't tell me what really happened, you'll do push-ups right here until you decide to tell me."
“…” Seconds, minutes, and even ten minutes passed, yet no one stepped forward. The soldiers from other units had long since dispersed, leaving only a few of them standing alone in the open space. Captain L stared calmly, as if nothing was amiss, and asked Xiao Qiang, “Wildfire, what were you doing last night?”
“Reporting to the captain, I was on patrol last night.”
“And after the patrol?”
“I went to sleep… and also…”
His brow raised slightly, a hint of sternness flashing across his face. “Speak.”
“I slept and dreamed… I dreamt about women,” Xiao Qiang said with a straight face.
Nearby, a member of Team N couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
“You guys are just too funny. Even getting beaten up is this enjoyable. I've never seen someone so shameless before,” Captain L fumed, pointing and scolding them. “You all do push-ups! Hmph!” After finishing his tirade, he turned and walked away.
Xiao Qiang clasped his fists together. “Sorry, brothers. I was going to say it earlier, but the squad leader wouldn’t let me…”
“Don’t worry, Wildfire. From now on, we share weal and woe together,” Liu Yi said as he grasped Xiao Qiang’s hand firmly and nodded resolutely. “It’s an honor for our team to have such a well-rounded member like you. I hope that in Tomorrow's Battle, we can work together to defeat the Mimetic Bionic Alien and not fall behind the members of Third Squad.”
As Xiao Qiang lay down to start doing push-ups, he supported himself with his limbs and turned his head to ask, “Third Squad?”
“That’s the mysterious female soldier you’re looking for—the team of Metal Slut.”
“Will they participate in Tomorrow's Battle?”
“Yes, we will be allied with them in battle.”
“Got it.”
In the military camp’s monitoring room, Captain L glared angrily at the screen. He pointed at Xiao Qiang, who was talking while doing push-ups. “This unruly guy… I…”
“Haha! Getting angry isn’t good for your health. You haven’t seen his skills yet,” General Jin Ming said with satisfaction as he watched Xiao Qiang on the screen. “Cosmic War has produced three outstanding warriors like you. I hope that in Tomorrow's Battle, he can stand out.”
“General, he…”
"Alright, don't say anything. Under the knife, there's a heart. Remember to focus on the strengths..." General Jin Ming finished speaking and walked out on his own; he was heading to a military meeting.
On the open ground, members of the N Team were doing push-ups, each one drenched in sweat. Without Captain L's orders, they dared not stop.
Regarding the emergency assembly, Liu Yi told Xiao Qiang, "An emergency assembly is the most critical matter, and it usually happens at night when everyone is sound asleep. The whistle blows at this inconvenient time. If it were summer or autumn, it might be bearable, but in winter, when it's freezing cold, hearing the emergency assembly whistle means the battle is about to begin. Regardless of whether it's real combat or just a drill, you must enter a state of readiness as quickly as possible. Otherwise, if you end up on the battlefield, you'll be the first to fall."
"I understand," Xiao Qiang glanced at the other team members who were already exhausted and slowing down even more. He maintained his pace and occasionally exchanged a few words with Liu Yi.
Liu Yi continued, "The basic requirements for an emergency assembly: within three minutes, you must get out of bed, get dressed, organize your gear, and line up. When the whistle sounds with an irresistible force and fills the suddenly tense air, it's like a proton undergoing fission, bursting forth with astonishing power."
"Yeah, new recruits are bound to mess things up."
"Of course! Just like when I first arrived; I knew nothing. When I heard the whistle, I scrambled out of bed in a panic. The chaos was indescribable—especially among soldiers just waking up. Some were fully alert, some half-asleep, and others remained motionless in bed. It was quite a scene. But we looked out for each other; comrades called out to one another. With time constraints, no one cared whether their clothes were on properly or if buttons were fastened right or shoelaces tied well. We just rushed to the training ground as soon as we were somewhat ready."
"You all seem pretty spirited. Do you want to continue?" Captain L suddenly appeared; surprisingly, the exhausted soldiers hadn't noticed him at all.
