L Captain felt a twinge of unease about the new recruit, Wildfire, and decided to return for another check. As he walked into the Campsite, he spotted Xiao Qiang and Barbarian engaged in conversation. "Hey, what are you two up to?" he asked.
Both Xiao Qiang and Barbarian turned to him simultaneously, replying in unison, "Nothing." The former wanted to avoid punishment this time and clear his name, while the latter feared that the captain would discover his extortion of the new recruits and impose a punishment worse than push-ups.
The two exchanged knowing glances and silently followed the captain deeper into the campsite.
As usual, members of Team N were playing poker. However, after the three entered, they quickly dispersed and pretended to be busy with other activities. Xiao Qiang thought about how last time they had teamed up against him, and he realized he needed to build a good relationship with them first.
Knowing there were playing cards hidden beneath the table, he took it upon himself to sit down at one of the poker spots after L Captain introduced him to Liu Yi and greeted the other team members. His intention was to disguise their secret from L Captain.
However, Xiao Qiang had no idea that L Captain had already seen them playing poker upon entering. Seeing him foolishly sitting at the spot where the cards were hidden made L Captain chuckle inwardly as he walked over and abruptly revealed Xiao Qiang's position.
Caught off guard, Xiao Qiang stammered, "This... this..."
"What is this 'this'?" L Captain snapped, slapping the deck of cards against his palm while casting a sharp gaze around.
Damn it! If that idiot recruit hadn't sat there, the captain wouldn't have known we were playing poker. Hmph! Just wait, Xiao Qiang. Liu Yi and his teammates seethed with frustration internally but maintained a submissive facade as they braced for L Captain's reprimand.
"This time, I'll let it slide," L Captain said coldly. "But remember this; I'll be watching your performance in Tomorrow's Battle." With that, he shot a disdainful glance at Xiao Qiang before striding away.
"Hey, that's not how it is!" Xiao Qiang exclaimed foolishly. He wanted to explain that they couldn't go to Tomorrow's Battle because it would endanger Team N members.
L Captain suddenly turned around, his expression unreadable as he looked at the anxious Xiao Qiang chasing after him. "Wildfire, do you have something to say?"
"Captain, we can't go to Tomorrow's Battle..."
"Oh?" L Captain raised an eyebrow, his gaze sharp as a blade. "What qualifications do you have to discuss Tomorrow's Battle? Your mission is to go to the front lines and kill those monsters invading Earth."
Thinking of those monstrous creatures rolling in from underground with countless tentacle-like appendages, Xiao Qiang felt a chill run down his spine. He instinctively shook his head. "Captain, we can't defeat those monsters. In fact, they'll kill us all... including..." He hesitated but ultimately swallowed the rest of his words. After all, he was still a new recruit; how could he possibly know about Metal Slut Number 22? Besides, saying such demoralizing things on the front lines would surely get him locked up as a lunatic.
Unfortunately for Xiao Qiang, he was slow on the uptake. L Captain was already furious. He bellowed, "Liu Yi! Punish Wildfire with one hundred push-ups and twenty laps!"
Xiao Qiang stood there dumbfounded. Was this fate? Was it something predetermined? Regardless of how hard he tried to change it, it seemed impossible. He watched helplessly as L Captain left and saw Team N members snickering at his misfortune; all he could do was accept his punishment.
Completing one hundred push-ups and twenty laps under the astonished gazes of Team N members left him breathless. Exhaling softly, Xiao Qiang adjusted his shirt while ignoring their whispers as he prepared to leave the open area.
"Hey, I'll take you to shower," Liu Yi said with a friendly smile that gave no indication of anything amiss. But Xiao Qiang knew exactly what was coming next; he wondered if he'd see her soon.
Hesitant and contemplating for a moment, he ultimately succumbed to some physiological or psychological temptation and agreed to follow Liu Yi to the shower room.
This time at the shower room, he was cautious. First, he confirmed whether Liu Yi was in Shower Stall Number 3. Then he prepared some body wash before finally stepping into Shower Stall Number 2 with peace of mind.
By some twist of fate or sheer coincidence, everything unfolded in a way that left Xiao Qiang dumbfounded. While focusing on rinsing off body wash from his skin, the curtain in Shower Stall Number 2 suddenly fell away under a wave of steam.
"Liu Yi!" He called out as he moved to pick it up and hang it back up but was distracted by the sound of water splashing from next door. A sudden thought struck him: could she be in Shower Stall Number 3? Driven by curiosity, he gritted his teeth and tiptoed over with intentions of sneaking a peek before leaving. Just as he reached for the curtain of Stall Number 3, a sharp scream echoed from behind him—not from Stall Number 3.
Still steaming from his shower and caught off guard by Metal Slut Number 22's sudden appearance, she covered her face in embarrassment and stumbled backward. At that moment, Xiao Qiang felt an overwhelming urge to disappear into thin air.
In reality, though there was nowhere else to run except back into Stall Number 2.
Frustrated by this turn of events—unlike last time when he'd been distracted by body wash—he recalled how previously he'd seen her because there had been no body wash available in Stall Number 3.
This time she had entered through the door without giving him any time to think when someone spoke up.
"He didn't offend you, did he?" It was L Captain's voice.
"No," came her reply.
"Liu Yi! I entrusted him to you; why didn't you keep an eye on him?"
"Who knows... I... I was also taking a shower," Liu Yi stammered, as if he wanted to say something more.
"Go on."
"Could he be a rabbit?"
"What do you mean?"
"He came earlier wanting to see me shower, and he just happened to be caught by the goddess."
"Is that really true?" Captain L seemed to be asking Goddess No. 22.
"I'm not sure; that's your group's business," the goddess replied, trying to avoid getting involved.
"Captain, just let him retire," Liu Yi urged.
What is this guy up to? Xiao Qiang thought resentfully. However, upon hearing the goddess's words, he stopped considering going out to confront them.
"Retirement? It's not that serious. Let me think..." The goddess seemed to be contemplating, then said, "From now on, let's put up a sign here as a reminder." A light, quick sound of footsteps faded away; it seemed the goddess had left.
Maybe she didn't see my face clearly, Xiao Qiang reassured himself.
"You tied him up; it's up to you to punish him."
Hearing this, Xiao Qiang, hiding in the shower room, groaned in despair. Why did things have to change? He still had to face punishment as usual.
