The afternoon sunlight lingered in the dappled shadows, growing increasingly distant. In a nondescript corner of the training ground stood a solitary figure, exuding an air of loneliness. The taste of desolation hung in the air, and memories coalesced into a sudden surge of sorrowful unease. Amidst the swirling mist, his eyes brimmed with lament, and the weathered lines on his face bore witness to the passage of time, rendering him weary and lifeless.
Time and again, he had faced life and death, enduring countless battles and relentless trials that had deepened his understanding. The approaching footsteps disrupted his wandering thoughts.
L, K, and the 22nd Goddess appeared before Xiao Qiang simultaneously.
"Kid, do you have something to say?" K exaggeratedly cracked his knuckles, the joints popping audibly as he adopted an arrogant stance toward Xiao Qiang.
Xiao Qiang shot him a disdainful glance, a slight smirk playing at the corners of his lips. "I do have something to say to you. Whether you believe it or not is up to you." As he spoke, Jack quietly materialized behind them. He had been keeping an eye on this guy who once provoked the 22nd Goddess through the surveillance footage while smoking in the training ground.
"Stop wasting time; just get to the point. You'll have your chance to talk soon," K snapped, glaring fiercely at Xiao Qiang.
The atmosphere grew tense due to K's brashness, and even Jack, watching from afar, felt a bead of cold sweat for Xiao Qiang.
Xiao Qiang leisurely scanned each of them before speaking. "What I said at the club still stands. You... are indeed my close partners: Wu Yi, Wen Kai, Li Hang..." He fixed his gaze on the 22nd Goddess and earnestly said, "And you, Lin Yu."
Lin Yu's eyes flickered as she opened her mouth to speak, but K couldn't wait any longer. He lunged forward to grab Xiao Qiang by the collar. The latter nimbly dodged and retorted, "Don't you think your actions are a bit rash?"
"Who do you think you are? How dare you act so brazenly in front of me!" K shouted back, disregarding L and the 22nd Goddess's attempts to dissuade him as he prepared to confront Xiao Qiang.
"Hold on! Let me finish speaking," Xiao Qiang bellowed as he seized K's arm. In a swift motion that caught everyone off guard, he rolled up K's sleeve and said, "Look here."
On K's forearm was a series of letters deeply embedded like a birthmark: jd10wk. "So what? This is my birthmark from childhood," K snapped back as he yanked his arm away angrily.
"Really? Is there such a coincidence in this world? You have a birthmark; I have one too..." Xiao Qiang revealed his own arm with letters: jd1xq.
What a coincidence! L could no longer remain calm at this point; he rolled up his sleeve to show his own letters: jd10lh.
K fell silent, shifting his gaze toward the 22nd Metal Slut.
Under Jack's and Xiao Qiang's scrutiny, she quickly turned and lifted her sleeve just enough for them to catch a glimpse before slowly turning back with a look full of suspicion directed at Xiao Qiang.
"What does this mean?"
"We are all members of JD, having played together since childhood. We have been to the DBL6 experimental base and even crossed over to Hong Kong. Our base is in 2050, and the mark on our arms symbolizes shame, all thanks to Professor R. Your real names are just letters."
Upon hearing Xiao Qiang, the three exchanged glances.
"Wait a minute, I don't quite understand," Jack suddenly interjected, squeezing in. "So you were brothers and then separated... like a pile of scattered sand... Now that you've recognized each other, forming a powerful force, does that mean there's hope for eliminating Mimetic Organism?"
Xiao Qiang looked at the three of them with resolute eyes and nodded, "Yes."
"We were found by a talent agency and brought here to erase our memories..." Wen Kai said awkwardly, scratching his head as he tried to recall past events but helplessly shook his head, looking distressed. "I can't remember anything."
Li Hang sighed, "I often have dreams that are unrelated to reality—fragmented and chaotic. After waking up, I forget them immediately. Those dreams were actually memories we experienced. My name is Li Hang."
"Right."
Lin Yu gazed at Xiao Qiang, who encouraged him, "You went with me to the fallen zone; you hinted that I should tell them both."
"I..." Lin Yu raised an eyebrow, deep in thought, but ultimately shook his head. "I have no recollection."
"Han Ming helped you recover your memories; you just died once, and the program had to restart. However, I am the only one controlling the program; it has nothing to do with you," Xiao Qiang finally fixed his gaze on Jack's face. "I went to the power station between the dam; there were no super Supreme Beings as you mentioned—only one Supreme Being and some low-level mimetic organisms."
"You went alone?" Lin Yu exclaimed in surprise.
"Yes. I didn't want you to die there. But the illusions those monsters gave me were traps; I still haven't found their true hiding place," Xiao Qiang approached Jack and said, "I still need your detection instruments for assistance."
"It's no use; one of the Quantum Systems has burned out."
“Can it be repaired?” Li Hang interjected.
“There are no such parts here. The Quantum System Components—quantum parallelism, quantum entanglement, and quantum cloning—require suitable components that we need to find,” came the response.
“I have a way,” Wen Kai nodded. “The Defense Alliance Command Headquarters.”
“Go find General Jin Ming,” Xiao Qiang hesitated.
“Wildfire, didn’t you mention someone named Wu Yi? Should I go get him?” Li Hang reminded Xiao Qiang.
“Yeah, if I get the chance, I’ll bring him in. Damn it, I refuse to believe that the five of us War Orphans can’t handle the backbone of the monsters.”
“I think we should split up. Li Hang, you shouldn’t go looking for Wu Yi. If you show up in front of him, who knows what might happen? I’ll handle it,” Xiao Qiang said with a commanding demeanor.
“No, I should go,” Lin Yu smiled calmly at Xiao Qiang.
Xiao Qiang acquiesced.
Jack watched Xiao Qiang from the side, genuinely admiring his orderly command skills and courage. He thought to himself: This person will surely become a top-tier figure one day.
They quickly divided their tasks: Lin Yu would head to the base to find Wu Yi and meet up with Xiao Qiang to approach General Jin Ming, ensuring he wouldn’t appear at the Defense Alliance Command to assist Li Hang in successfully repairing the Quantum System Components.
The others gradually left the training ground, each heading to their respective posts.
Xiao Qiang and Jack continued discussing the events that occurred when they entered the power station. They meticulously analyzed and pointed out potential dangers.
Jack said, “It’s a stroke of luck that you managed to restart time without being captured.”
Xiao Qiang pondered for a moment and said, "No..." He rested his chin on his hand, carefully recalling past fragments before decisively stating, "What I find strange is that when they attacked me from both sides, that Phosphorescent Overlord-Level Creature didn't seem to have the intention to kill me."
"Right. Their goal is to capture you alive. You have something they need—blood."
