"If you ignore the Mimetic Organism thriving on Earth, wantonly plundering the home that belongs to humanity and slaughtering defenseless humans, then please shoot me," Xiao Qiang said, pounding his chest. His gaze pierced through Jin Ming, unsettling him to his core.
"Well, convincing me isn't going to be as simple as a few words," Jin Ming replied just as the phone on the desk rang sharply.
The ringing interrupted their conversation and drew the attention of several pairs of eyes. It was a call from the Defense Alliance Headquarters. Xiao Qiang quickly grabbed the receiver and covered the mouthpiece, saying to Jin Ming, "You tell them to wait a moment before responding."
Jin Ming took the call. "Hello? Uh... please hold on for a moment." He hung up and glanced at Wu Yi. What a strange creature; its fingernails looked like iron hooks. If he had made even a slight mistake just now, would it have reached out with those hooks?
"He means no harm; you can rest assured," Xiao Qiang said as he sat down heavily on the desk. He looked at Jin Ming with focused seriousness. "I've been to the battlefield countless times, and each time I died within minutes. Not just me, but other soldiers too."
"How do you know all this?" Jin Ming asked, scrutinizing Xiao Qiang.
"The first time I went to battle, I killed a Mimetic Organism, but then another one attacked me. Just like that, I died. It was a cycle—death, waking up, dying again, waking up once more."
Jin Ming remained indifferent, not absorbing Xiao Qiang's words at all. He didn't believe in his tales of death and resurrection; they sounded like legendary nonsense to him.
Just as Xiao Qiang was about to say something else, he suddenly stood up straight and returned to his original position in an orderly manner. He spun his chair around and said to Jin Ming, "Communications are coming in; quickly tell her everything is normal here."
Jin Ming raised his neck, not understanding what he meant.
The office door quietly opened from the outside, and a poised Officer entered. She glanced warily at Xiao Qiang and the other three, instinctively reaching for her waist.
"Is there something you need, Sergeant?" Jin Ming spoke up. The Officer quickly withdrew her hand; drawing her weapon in front of the commander would be tantamount to seeking death. Without an order from the commander, she couldn't draw her gun.
"I'm sorry, Commander; I didn't know you had guests."
"Nothing serious; you can leave now."
The Officer stepped back and closed the door behind her.
Jin Ming scratched his head. "Can you tell me how you swaggered in here without alarming my guards and soldiers?" To be honest, after a series of verifications, he found himself increasingly intrigued by this mutant before him.
The other party was a mutant with an Ability. In these extraordinary times, they still held value for the country. He suspected there must be loopholes in their defensive measures; otherwise, how could they have entered the high-ranking commander's office so brazenly under the watchful eyes of strict guards?
"It's actually quite simple; we entered from the front without disturbing your guards or soldiers," came the reply.
"You have abilities like tunneling or wall-running," he deduced.
“Xiao Qiang smiled and said, ‘We came in through the front without spending a bit of energy.’
This seemingly simple conversation made Jin Ming's heart sink. These mutants were lawless, entering here was like walking into a no-man's land. If the current war was not against extraterrestrial beings but against mutants, the consequences would be even worse. It seemed that mutants could not be left alive; at least after they had been used, a major cleanup would be necessary.
‘Ahem, well, if you have any requests, feel free to bring them up. I will consider them,’ he said.
‘General, time waits for no one. We need a response quickly,’ Xiao Qiang urged. ‘I don’t want to keep meeting with you to discuss this matter.’
Lin Yu pulled out his pistol from the side. ‘Shall we start taking action then?’
Xiao Qiang raised a finger. ‘Shh, wait a moment.’ He then looked at General Jin Ming and said, ‘General, don’t be stubborn. Stubbornness will only delay the best opportunity to eliminate the Mimetic Organism.’
‘You haven’t made any requests; how can I respond?’
‘Hmm,’ Xiao Qiang turned back and signaled Wu Yi to come forward. He introduced him, ‘This is General Jin Ming.’ Then he addressed General Jin Ming again, ‘He is Wu Yi, my partner and a capable person.’
‘And then?’
‘I hope the general can be lenient and allow him to officially become one of us.’
‘If there’s anything else, feel free to mention it,’ Jin Ming said as he moved closer to the desk.
Lin Yu suddenly stood up and aimed his gun at him firmly. ‘General, please don’t approach the desk.’
Jin Ming paused slightly; these guys were too skilled. How did they know there was an alarm under the desk? He rolled his eyes and pretended to make a subconscious gesture by raising his hand with his palm down and brushing over his head. ‘You all look so tense on my turf; are you too nervous?’
Xiao Qiang continued, ‘General, we’re discussing serious matters.’
Jin Ming had no choice but to nod. ‘Go ahead.’
‘We must strike decisively. Finding the core energy of the Mimetic Organism is essential to minimize casualties and eliminate them in one go, driving them off Earth.’
‘Just based on you?’ General Jin Ming shot a disdainful glance at Lin Yu and Wu Yi.
‘Not just us; it’s the Quantum System Components. And this Quantum System Components is in the safe at Defense Alliance Headquarters,’ Xiao Qiang’s gaze swept across Jin Ming’s face. Unfortunately, Jin Ming was too experienced; his expression remained calm with no visible signs of change or fluctuation.
General Jin Ming nodded. ‘As you said, today’s conversation concerns the entire world. So what role can this Quantum System Components play? What you can do, we can certainly do as well. I will increase firepower and bomb the Mimetic Organism’s lair into a pile of rubble.’”
"Using simple human thinking will not win this war; on the contrary, it will further hand humanity and the Earth over to the ruthless Mimic Alien."
Jin Ming raised an eyebrow. "Alright, follow me."
Xiao Qiang, Lin Yu, and Wu Yi were somewhat incredulous. They hadn't expected their old comrade to be less stubborn than they imagined, and he had been so easily persuaded. It seemed there was no need for Wen Kai and Li Hang to resort to force to seize the Quantum System device.
The three followed behind Jin Ming, feeling a sense of pride. Once they got through the main door, they could head to headquarters and obtain the Quantum System Components.
Suddenly, Jin Ming stopped in his tracks and casually said, "You go ahead; I'll catch up in a moment."
Lin Yu looked at his departing figure with suspicion, glancing at Xiao Qiang to see if they should follow.
Xiao Qiang shook his head. "Let's trust him this once."
Just as Jin Ming left, a squad of armed soldiers rushed in and surrounded them completely. The situation became complicated. Was Jin Ming planning to silence them or take them for research? Lin Yu didn't have time to think further; he raised his gun and aimed at Xiao Qiang, realizing they had no choice but to start over.
